I wanted to thank you all for stopping by and saying good-bye. All your kind words, meant a lot to me. I was overwhelmed with the cards, gifts, and the class gift card collection. Thank you so much! I really enjoyed getting to know all of you and working with your children this year.The last day of school is always a tearful last day for me. I get attached to all the kids in my class and it is hard to say good-bye.

I am so proud of each student in my class and to see the growth that each student made this year was outstanding!

Have a beautiful summer and enjoy the warmth of the sun.

News for Week of June 8 – 12

The last week of school is here! The following is a schedule of events for the last week of school.

Monday, June 8 – Year End Class Picnic – 9:15 – 11:30 am. Students will have lunch in the cafeteria 11:40 – 12:10 pm. Picnic will be held by the lower-el playground. Rain -date for picnic will be Tuesday, June 9 at the same time. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that it does not rain.

Tuesday, June 9 – Full day of school.

Wednesday, June 10 – Last day of school. 1/2 day dismissal at 11:45 am. Report cards will go home along with the NWEA spring reports. On the last day student’s may bring a board game to play with friends in class. No electronic games please.

Please have your child continue to bring their back-packs to school. There may be year-end materials to bring home in their back-packs.

Thank you parents for your support and dedication in helping your child to being successful this school year. Have a wonderful summer and enjoy the warmth of the sun!

Dates to remember:

Wednesday, June 3 – No library check-out. All library books must be returned. If you have a overdue book, please return the book to the library. Non-returned books or lost books will be charged.

Friday, June 5 – Field Day 9:20  – 12:00 pm. Rain date – June 8. Information regarding field day went home last Friday. If you would like to volunteer for field day, please contact Mike Vigilante 313-827-6900. Only all beef hot dogs will be served for lunch. Please pack a lunch for your child, if your child is not going to have a hot dog for lunch. Make sure your child has sunscreen on for the day and is wearing comfortable clothing and gym shoes.

Friday, June 5 – PTO movie night @ dusk.

Monday, June 8 – End of the Year Class Picnic. Information will be going out this week in your child’s blue folder. We will have a list of items we need donated for the picnic.

There will be no spelling tests or homework packets for the remainder of the year.

Please return classroom book bags, if you have not done so.

Dates to Remember

Wednesday, May 27 – Return library books. There will be no more check out times in the library.

Wednesday, May 27 – Detroit Zoo Field Trip – we will leave promptly by 9:10 am and will return to school by 2:30 pm. Don’t forget a brown bag lunch with your child’s name on it. No lunch boxes – disposable items only. Parent’s that are meeting us at the zoo, please meet by the front entrance and we will enter as a group.

Don’t forget to put sunblock on your child for the day and make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. Not sure if it will rain? It may be a good idea to have a rain poncho for rainy weather.

Chaperones, please meet at school by 9am. Please remember you will need a back-pack or tote to carry your group’s lunch bags. The following parents will chaperone small groups on our trip.

Dates to Remember

Monday, May 18 – Family – $7.00 admission fee is due. Only, if you are meeting our class at the zoo. I need to collect money ahead of time and process check for the zoo. In order to receive the $7.00 group discount rate we have to be admitted as a group. Students have no admission fees.

Chaperones have been selected. A chaperone note will go home in your child’s folder this week with a schedule for the field trip. Thank you for volunteering to chaperone on the trip!

Wednesday, May 20 – Library check-out. The end of the year is drawing near, so please make sure your child does not have any overdue library books.

Friday, May 22 – No school. Conference Release Day.

Monday, May 25 – No school. Memorial Day.

Wednesday, May 27 – Detroit Zoo Field Trip.

There will be no spelling test this week. We will be reviewing sight words this week.

Dates to Remember:

Monday, May 11 – Zoo Field Trip permission slips and chaperone slips are due. There is only room on the bus for 5 chaperones, so I will pull names to be fair. Parents are welcome to meet us at the zoo. If you plan on meeting us at the zoo and would like to take advantage of the group discount rate of $7.00 per child and adult, I need to collect the admission fee by Monday, May 18. We have to be admitted as a group to get the discount, otherwise the admission fee is $11.00 per child/adult.

If you are chosen as a chaperone you will need to ride on the bus with the class and you will be given a small group of students to chaperone for the day. Chaperones also need to fill out a volunteer/chaperone form in the office or you will not be able to chaperone on the trip. Some of you may have already filled this form out in the beginning of the year, please check in the office to see if you are registered. Thank you.

Wednesday, May 13 – Late Start. Students start school at 9:40 am

Wednesday, May 13 – Clean-up Dearborn Parade at 1:30 pm.

Our class will walk in the parade around the school. If you would like to make a costume, poster, or hat at home for the parade that would be great! Please make sure you have them ready by Wednesday for the parade. Suggestions include; recycle sign on string to be worn over the shoulder, cover a trash bag with plastic bottles and or cans glued to it, or paper items and then cut a hole to go over the head for a costume, headband with bottle caps glued to it, make a sign that says, “Recycle Cans”, “Recycle Bottles and “Recycle Paper.” Be creative and have fun!!

Thursday, May 14 – Author’s Writing Celebration – Kindergarten students will display their writing portfolios in the cafeteria from 9:15 – 10:15 am. Please join us for this special event!

Dates to Remember

Wednesday, May 27 – We will be going on a field trip to the Detroit Zoo. More information will go home in your child’s folder this week. I will need five chaperones for the field trip. So, check your calendar if you can join us at the zoo.

Testing – This week kindergartners will take the NWEA Reading Assessment in the computer lab. Last week, I started DRA reading assessments in class. Hopefully, I will be finished up on reading assessments this week. So, possibly mid-week I will start up reading groups and book bags will go home.

Spring is the time when teachers see so much growth in reading and writing. So, I am very excited to see the growth and progress my classroom has made from the beginning of the year to now.

They are predicting temps in the 70’s next week. So, please make sure you dress your child in cool, comfortable clothing. My classroom can get hot and unfortunately we do not have air conditioning.

A Peek at the Week

Science – We will begin planting seeds this week and follow up with an informational writing piece on how to plant a seed. Recording and observing our plant growth will follow. Next, we will start a unit on insects to learn more about living things.

Social Studies – We will begin a unit on How Do I Get Along with Others? Working together on making fair decisions, demonstrating self-discipline and individual responsibility and discussing why people do not have the right to do whatever they want.

Math – Working on writing nos. to 100 on a scroll, counting forward and backwards from a given no., and decomposing numbers less than or equal to 10. Fluently mastering addition facts within 5.

Writing – Informational writing on Insects/Living Things.

Reading – Working on short comprehension stories – retelling beginning, middle and end. Self to text connections – What did the story remind you of? Fluency – working on reading short sentences with common sight words to build fluency in reading groups.

Reviewing short/long vowel sounds and introducing silent “e” words.

Spelling words for week – bug, hug, jug     sight words – come, make

News for Week of April 20 – 24

The warm weather is approaching us. So, please be sure to have your child dress appropriately for school. It gets warm in our classroom and their bodies get hot while running around the playground. I have taken down winter clothing items to lost in found that no one claimed in our classroom. So, you may want to check if your child has any items in lost in found.

We will begin the district writing prompt this week. The writing prompt will be informational writing on living things. We have been studying living things in science, so the class should do well on this writing piece. At the end of the week we will follow up and plant a flower seed in class and write a informational how to writing piece.

Earth Day is Wednesday, April 22 so we will learn ways to keep our Earth clean.

Homework packets will go out this week with the theme of Earth week.
