Upcoming Events

Thursday, February 11 – Mrs. Polgar’s classroom Valentine’s Party from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. I will be having a small Valentine’s party and will only need a few volunteers to help students pass out Valentine’s. Students will pass out Valentine’s to friends in class. I have 25 students in my classroom. More information will be forthcoming about our classroom party.

Thursday, February 18 – Hundred’s Day Party – I will be having a Hundred’s Day party from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. I will need 4-5 volunteers to help with centers for this event.

Report cards will go home this week along with January NWEA scores.

Class Dojo – We have a new month to earn Dojo points. I am encouraging students to do their best everyday and to think about how others feel when you make negative choices.

Peek at the Week

Math – We will begin a new unit in math – addition and subtraction. We will learn different strategies to help us learn to add and subtract.

Social Studies – We will begin a new unit – Unit 2 Geography – Where Am I?

Science – New Unit – Life Science. Basic Needs – Living and Non-Living.

Daily Five – I am introducing a new CAFE Transition board. New strategies to help readers decode unknown words and strategies to help comprehend stories. Students will learn to retell a story and connect with a story. Learning di-graphs th, sh, wh, ch, ph. Reviewing vowel sounds – aeiou – activities. Working on building sight word fluency – knowing sight words automatically.

Writing – How to inform writing pieces. Last week we worked on How to Build a Snowman. This week we will look at how to brush your teeth and how to make a peanut butter jelly sandwich.

Monday, January 25 – Don’t forget to return red folders and sign progress reports. If your child did not turn in their green spelling notebook on Friday, please make sure they do on Monday.

Wednesday, January 27 – Library check-in and check-out.

Thursday, January 28 – PBIS celebration – Students who have earned Class Dojo points through the month of January will celebrate with a Dance Off in the afternoon on Thursday. By this time of year students are familiar with classroom routines, understand classroom rules and have an understanding of rewards and consequences for positive and negative behaviors in school.

Please encourage your child to use positive behavior everyday (use kind words, help others, listen and do their best work at school everyday). Thank you for your support!!!

Friday, January 29 – Records Day – 1/2 day of school. Dismissal 11:45 am.

 

Donations – we are in need of Kleenex and glue sticks (Elmer glue-sticks last longer).

Shoes – Please make sure your child has shoes to wear at school. It is important students have Gym shoes on Wednesday and Friday.

Snack – I have changed snack – time to 3:00 pm in the afternoon.

Spelling words for week – “et” word family    bet, pet, get      sight words – me, the, help

Writing – we will learn about text features with “How to Writing”. How to make a pizza, brush your teeth, build a snowman. Learn sequence words – first, second, third, next, last.

Reading – we have finished assessments in reading and students have completed the NWEA reading assessments as well.

Yea! back to reading groups. My class loves reading groups as much as me!! We will be working on sight word fluency, decoding words and comprehension – retelling a story.

Social Studies – We will take the Social Studies test on Unit 1 Who Am I? Unit on time – past, present, future. The time-lines were amazing and are hanging in the hallway. I love looking at those baby faces!

Science – we will be finishing up on our unit on Push/Pulls and take an assessment at the end of the week.

Math – we learned about 3D shapes last week and will learn about shape comparisons, naming 2D and 3D shapes and using items to build shapes with toothpicks, gumdrops.

Daily Five – I will introduce a new transition CAFE strategy board with new reading strategies. This will help our young readers decode words and use comprehension strategies to help understand stories they read.

Dates to Remember

Monday, January 18 – Martin Luther King day – No school.

Wednesday, January 20 – Late Start – school starts one hour later. Library check-in and check-out.

Thursday, January 21 – Timeline Project due.

Friday, January 22 – Spelling test and spelling notebooks are turned in.

Testing for the week – This week students will take the NWEA reading assessment and the district writing assessment. The writing assessment will be an opinion writing piece.

Sight Words – I have completed DRA – Diagnostic Reading Assessments with students. Continue to review sight words with your child it helps significantly when reading early reader text books. Sight words are to be read automatically. Please practice having your child read their sight words nightly.

Spelling words for weekan word family –  an, can, fan   sight words –  play, you, go.

First spelling test went well! Remember they are adjusting to taking a test and some need more time than others to sound out words and patterns. Practice other an word family words so your child understands word patterns. Again, by this time of year students should know their letters and sounds and able to recognize sight words from the beginning of the year.

Math – we will learn about 3D shapes this week and making shape comparisons. Understanding terms – greater than, less than, equal. Practice counting by ones, and tens. Practice writing numbers 1-20 and number words; one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.

Daily Five – learning some new reading strategies when we come to a word we do not know. Reviewing vowel sounds and reading and writing CVC words – cat, fan, map, sit, etc.

Writing – District Writing assessment – Opinion writing. Finish unit on Penguins – Informational Writing. Identifying non-fiction text features.

Science – Push/Pulls.

Social Studies – Timelines will be introduced. Review vocabulary – past, present, future, yesterday, tomorrow, today.

If you are late arriving to school. Please go to the front door and go to the office and check-in if you are late. With the cold weather, I can’t leave the door open. It is disruptive for the class, if I have to get up and get the door when school starts when we are gathered at carpet. The bell rings at 8:40 am.

Dates to Remember

Monday, January 11 – The NED Show – is a anti-bullying show that will be held at 2:30 pm in the gym.

Wednesday, January 13 – Library book check-in and check-out.

Friday, January 15 – First spelling test of the year.

Spelling Notebooks – On Monday students will bring home a spelling homework notebook. Students will be responsible for studying their spelling words and completing their spelling assignments for the week. Students will turn in their notebook every Friday. A new list of spelling words will go in their notebook on Mondays. Please read the spelling homework activity sheet in your child’s blue folder on Monday.

Homework packets – I will be discontinuing the homework packets in place of spelling notebook assignments. I want to focus on spelling, writing sentences and sight word recognition for nightly homework. Students should have all letter and sound recognition by this time of year. If there is a  math skill or language skill I feel your child needs additional support with I will send home additional homework for support.

Social Studies – we are learning about time and studying the terms past, present and future. A timeline project will go home so that your child has a better understanding of the terms past, present and future. Directions will go home in your child’s blue folder on Monday. The timeline project will be due Thursday, January 21.

A Peek at the Week

Language Arts – Daily Five – Spelling word activities, sorting and matching di-graphs, reviewing consonants, vowels, reading and writing CVC words, using pictures to help read unknown words in a text. Comprehension strategies learning story elements – problem and solution in a story.

Math – we will continue with telling time activities and move into a shape unit in math.

Social Studies – new unit Who Am I? Students will learn about time and focus on timeline study this week.

Science – Unit on Push and Pulls.

Writing – Students just finished up on opinion writing and have learned how to state an opinion and give a reason in their writing. We will start informational writing on a unit on penguins this week.

Assessments – for the month of January student assessments will be taken in all subjects. This week students will take the NWEA test in math on the computer and later in the month students will take the NWEA reading test. I have started assessing students in math and reading in the classroom. Once I finish up with assessments reading groups will start up and book bags will go home.

Cold weather – get ready for the cold weather and make sure your child dresses for the cold. Students will go out for recess everyday. The only time students do not go out for recess is when the temperature with a wind-chill drops to 20 degrees or below.

Friday, January 8th – Mrs. Polgar’s Bake Sale after school.

This Friday I will be having a bake sale so we are in need of baked good donations. Store bought donations such as cookies, cupcakes, etc. as well as home baked goodies are needed. The more goodies we have to sell the better the sales. All sales go towards field trips, and classroom materials.

I am need of parent volunteers to help sell bake goods after school on Friday as well. Probably 3 volunteers would be great. Please let me know if you are interested.

Dates to Remember

Tuesday, December 15 – Brainstormers will visit Nowlin at 2:00 – 3:00 pm. They will perform skits and get students involved in the writing process.

Wednesday, December 16Late Start – school starts an hour later. Nowlin Sing-a-Long 2:30 – 3:00 pm in the Gym. All families are invited to participate and sing holiday songs.

Thursday, December 17 – Students in Mrs. Polgar’s class can wear P.J.’s and will watch the Polar Express 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.

Friday, December 18 – Mrs. Polgar’s Holiday party 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. Volunteers please arrive by 12:00 – 12:10 to help set-up centers for the party. We could still use a volunteer to help make hot cocoa and help serve cocoa to students.

Monday, December 21 – begins Winter recess break.

Students return to school Monday, January 4, 2016.

There will be no homework packets for over the holiday break.

I will not be in class on Monday, December 14. I will have a sub, Ms. Jessica.

Dates to Remember

Monday, December 7 – Holiday family banner project due.

Monday – Friday, December 7 – 11 – Santa’s Workshop – Students can purchase gifts for family and friends. A notice will go home this week when Mrs. Polgar’s class will attend.

Wednesday, December 8 – Library check-in and check-out.

Saturday, December 12 – Barnes and Noble fundraiser for Nowlin school. Nowlin will get a percentage of profits, so please come and shop for some holiday gifts.

Tuesday, December 15 – Brainstormers will visit our school. Brainstormers is a group that does stage performances and gets students excited about writing stories.

Wednesday, December 16 – Nowlin Sing-a-long of holiday songs. Please come and join us in the gym. More information about this event will be posted soon.

Thursday, December 17 – Polar Express 1:30 -2:30 pm. Students can wear pajamas to school and board the Polar Express and enjoy the movie, “The Polar Express” in Mrs. Polgar’s classroom. Students will enjoy hot cocoa and cookies for a treat. I will need a volunteer to help make hot cocoa in the afternoon and pass out to students.

Friday, December 18 – Mrs. Polgar’s Holiday Party 12:30 – 1:30 pm. We will celebrate the holidays with a class holiday party. All parents are welcome to attend and children may wear holiday attire. An e-mail party invite along with a volunteer sign-up for help with centers and donation of items needed for the party will be e-mailed this week. Make sure your child brings or wears their gym shoes. We have Gym from 1:30 – 2:20 pm.

Last Friday, Nowlin hosted a Math Workshop for parents to see what their child is learning in math at school. On Friday, I sent home a lady-bug addition mat with M&M’s to practice addition. You can use this mat at home with dice or with counters of any kind to help your child practice addition sentences. Thank you to all the parents who attended the workshop the class really enjoyed you being there.

Class Dojo – I have mentioned to students that this is the month to earn positive Dojo points because Santa is coming and we will have our PBIS celebration at the end of the month. As a class we need to practice good behavior all the time.

This is an overview for families to learn what your child is doing in math during Math Workshop. More information about this event will go home in your child’s blue folder this week.

Letter of Week – O and P    Sight words – in, is, it

Writer’s Workshop – Students will work on narratives in writing. Learn about features of narratives and introducing problem and solution in stories.

Math Workshop – Students will continue working on writing numbers 1-20. Building numbers 1-20 in ten frames and learning about place value – ones and tens place. Practicing counting up to 50 by ones and tens for this card marking. Counting objects in sequence and ordering numbers.

Daily Five – Students will work on reading and writing CVC words, counting syllables in words, adding an (s) to nouns, writing in different ways; lists, labeling, cards, stories. Picking and choosing good fit books for reading to self and someone.

Science – We will work on a new unit Physical Science and start off learning about gravity and the Earth.

Social Studies – We will start a new unit in Social Studies – How do I get what I need and want? Beginning the unit with distinguishing between the terms needs and wants.

Student of the Month for December – Congratulations Rosie Calder!

With the cold weather approaching please make sure you dress your child appropriately for the cold weather; hats, gloves, winter coat, snow pants and boots if needed. Children go out for recess at lunch and later in the afternoon.

Dates to Remember

Tuesday, November 24 – PBIS celebration   All students who had positive behavior for the month of November will participate in a celebration in the afternoon on Tuesday. Students may bring a board game to school to play during the celebration games such as; Candy Lane, Shoots and Ladders, Sorry, etc. No electronics will be allowed.

Thanksgiving break – No school on  November 25 – November 27. Students return to school on Monday, November 30.

There will be no red folders and no homework packets this week.

Students have been bringing home book bags. Please return the book bag and sign the book log so I know students have read their book(s) at home. A book log and information are enclosed in the book bag.
