Dates to Remember

Monday, May 9 – Detroit Zoo Field Trip. All field trip permission slips need to be turned in. If you plan on being a chaperone for the field trip you need to fill out a background history form and submit a copy of your license to the office. If you have already completed a background check, then you do not need to do anything further.  We will be able to accomodate seating on the bus for chaperones who signed up to chaperone. If you plan on meeting us at the zoo, please let me know in advance.

Monday, April 25 – Students will begin NWEA Reading assessment in computer lab.

Tuesday, April 26 – Students will begin District Informational Writing Prompt assessment.

Wednesday, April 27 – Library Check-in and Check-out.

Friday, April 29 – Mrs. Polgar’s after school bake sale. We are in need of volunteers and baked goods for the bake sale. Please consider contributing baked goods for the bake sale. The more baked goods we have the more we can sell. Last bake sale we earned enough to fund student admissions and chaperone costs to the Hands on Museum.

Math – We are working on a measurement unit and studying capacity. We are also getting prepared for the NWEA test in math by reviewing counting by ones, skip counting, recognizing numbers, counting groups of items, adding, subtracting, making tens and ones with ten frames and reviewing math vocabulary.

Daily Five – Working on blending and segmenting syllables into spoken words. Substituting individual sounds in one-syllable words to make new words. Reading non-fiction books and using text, illustrations to identify unknown words. Building sight word fluency and reviewing reading strategies in reading groups.

Social Studies – Public Discourse

Science – Earth Science

Writing – Informational Unit – District writing prompt on Living Animals and Basic Needs.

Dates to Remember

We will be going to the Detroit Zoo on Monday, May 9 with Mrs. Dika’s class from 9:00 – 2:30. A field trip permission slip was sent home on Friday. Please sign the form and return it by Wednesday, April 20 if your child is going on the field trip.

If you would like to chaperone on the trip, please indicate on the bottom of the form. We need to get a head count of number of children going to the zoo as well as adults.

I am planning another field trip to the Detroit Zoo on May 9. So, mark your calendars if you are able to help chaperone on this trip. We will join Mrs. Dika’s class for the field trip. Information will be forthcoming regarding the zoo. Thank you to all the chaperones who helped out with the Hands on Museum.

Families please make sure you check your child’s back-pack for reading bags, and sign and return red-folders and blue folders.

We are preparing for the NWEA test in Language Arts and Math at month end. Also, getting prepared and reviewing learning objectives for the end of the school year. Ways to help your child prepare for the upcoming NWEA and year end learning objectives are utilizing Moby Max learning site and reviewing Kindergarten learning objectives that were passed out in the beginning of the year. If you have any questions how to access Moby Max or other resources, please let me know.

Peek at the Week

Writing – Informational writing unit on frogs. Students will study a frogs habitat/environment, frog features and how they use their body parts, along with what a frog eats.

Math – Continue with unit on measurement. This week we explore weight/capacity, use of pan balance. Work with groups of objects that are greater than, less than or equal to another group.

Daily Five – Work on spelling words, flipping vowel sounds to help decode words, reviewing word endings; ing, ed. Practice writing CVC words, reviewing short and long vowel sounds. Reviewing digraphs – ar, er, ir, ur. to help decode words. Continue working on comprehension and retelling stories.

Science – Observing different earth materials and using our senses to explore earth materials.

Social Studies – Unit on Public Discourse. Identifying problems and coming up with solutions as a class.

Dates to Remember

Monday, April 4 – Students return to school from break. Return green spelling notebooks.

Tuesday, April 5 – Hands on Museum Field Trip. Students will be leaving by 9:00 am and returning to school by 2:30 pm. Students still report to school at regular school time. PLEASE REMEMBER TO PACK YOUR CHILD A BROWN BAG LUNCH WITH THEIR NAME PRINTED ON THE BAG. We will not be going out to lunch. Items in lunch need to be disposable. Chaperones need to report to school by 8:50 for group assignments. Please bring a back-pack to carry group lunch bags.

Friday, April 8 – PBIS Celebration for the month of March. Students who earned positive Class Dojo points will get extra recess in the afternoon from 2:15-3:00 pm. Congratulations! to students who always promote and work on positive behavior in school.

Writing – We will start a new unit in writing on Informational Writing on animals. We will begin a unit on frogs and students will make informational writing booklets on facts about frogs.

Math – We will continue our unit on measurement. Students will learn how to describe an object’s weight and length with use of standard and non-standard units of measurement. Students will learn vocabulary to compare objects. We will work on counting by 10’s, 2’s 5’s and 1’s to 100. Work on recognizing numbers on 100 chart and writing numbers. Working on terms least, greater, less than, more than and equal with story problems.

Science – We will begin a new unit on Earth science. Students will learn about different earth materials; water, soil, sand, rock and what the earth is made up of.

Social Studies – We will begin a new unit on Public Discourse. Students will identify classroom/school issues and problems and ways to resolve issues.

Daily Five/Lg. Arts. – Accuracy – Students will use the beginning and ending of words to figure out what a word means. Students will learn to read words with blends; ar, er endings. Comprehension – Students will understand how to compare and contrast characters in a story. Students will learn to use text features to understand words in bold print, labels, headings and captions with informational text features. Students will continue to build sight words fluency with sight word activities in the word center.

Dates to Remember

Wednesday, March 23 – Library Check in/out. We will have an author visit our school at 10:00 am. Students will learn about different genres in a fun assembly. Parent – teacher conferences after school 4-6:40 pm. All scheduled conferences were sent out last week to meet with your child. Please be on time for conferences, so all conferences can go as scheduled.

Reading Logs will be due Wednesday this week.

Thursday, March 24 – Spring Egg Hunt will be at 10:00 am. Please have your child bring in 25 eggs filled with a packaged treat and secured with tape by Wednesday, March 23. Also, have your child bring in a basket or bucket to collect eggs with their name on the container. We still need volunteers to help hide eggs outside and help during the hunt. Please let me know, if interested. End of school day we will celebrate the end of March is Reading month. We will learn what class read the most books and prizes and more will be given away..

Friday, March 25 – No school. Spring Break March 25 – April 1. Students report back to school Monday, April 4.

Tuesday, April 5 – When we return from Spring break we will be going on our field trip to the Hands on Museum. Information will go out this week regarding the upcoming field trip.

Wednesday, March 16 – Late start. School starts one hour later.

Tuesday, April 5 – Field Trip Hands on Museum. All field trip permission slips must be returned to school this week. Your child will not be able to attend the field trip, if the school does not have a parent permission slip for the field trip. Also, if you signed up to be a chaperone on the field trip, you have to fill out a background check with a copy of your license. Please fill out paper work in the office.

Dates to Remember

Tuesday, March 15 – Kindergarten Round-up 6pm in Media Center. If you know of any incoming Kindergarten age children, please pass this information on to their parents, they can call the school to make sure they are on our roster.

Wednesday, March 16 – Project – Leprechaun Trap’s are due. We need to set our traps before St. Patrick’s Day.

Thursday, March 17 – Kindergarten – Lower elementary Music Concert at 6:30 p.m.

Friday, March 18 – Bingo for Books held in cafeteria at 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. Join us for an evening of fun with family and go home with book prizes.

Wednesday, March 23 – Parent – Teacher Conferences. Notices went home last week if a meeting was scheduled with your child.

Thursday, March 24 – Mrs. Polgar’s Spring Egg Hunt will be in the morning at 10:00 am. We will need volunteers to help hide eggs on the playground and to help during the egg hunt. Information will go out this week in blue folders.

Report cards – 3rd report card marking ends March 20. So, I will be working on reading and math assessments next week.

A note went home regarding the MobyMax educational web-site last week. Please utilize this web-site for reading and math. This will help your child get familiar with computer generated questions and prepare them for computer based tests like the NWEA. Students will be taking the NWEA in April. We are finding if students have exposure to sites like MobyMax their reading and math scores improve significantly with practice on the computer.

Thursday, March 17 – Lower elementary (Kindergarten) Music concert at 6:30 pm.

Friday, March 18Bingo for Books at 5:30 pm. Come and play BINGO and win some books. Families are welcome.

Wednesday, March 23Parent Teacher Conferences. I will be sending home notes to parents I would like to meet with this week. If you do not receive a conference note and would like to meet with me, please let me know and we can schedule a meeting.

Thursday, March 24 – Egg Hunt. I am planning to have the egg hunt in the afternoon and will need volunteers. I will hopefully have the time for the egg hunt this week.

March is Reading Month – please make sure you check the blue reading calendar each day to see what reading activities your child is participating in at school and at home. A reading calendar and a reading log went home last week. Please make sure your child reads a book each night and you fill out the reading log each week to participate in the school reading contest. A new reading log will go home on Monday.

Moby Max – school reading contest. This week I will be sending home a note giving you directions to log on the Moby Max educational site for reading, math, writing and more. We will be hosting a reading contest for most books read on computer with Moby Max. Information will be going home on Monday, check blue folder.

This week we will be celebrating the author, Dr. Seuss. for March is Reading month. I will be sending home a note for your child to bring any Dr. Seuss books you may own. They can keep their Dr. Seuss books in their book boxes. Please make sure they have their name written in the inside cover of the book.
