This month we are celebrating March is Reading month in school. The theme this year is Reading Around the World. Kindergarten will be learning about the continent Antartica. Last week in student blue folders a calendar of events and an invitation to Literacy night went home. We will be doing activities in class along with the calendar of events. Also, a pink reading log went home for your child to start reading a book a night. Reading logs will be turned in on Friday of each week. The class that has the most reading logs turned in will win an ice cream party at the end of the month. Additionally, there will be individual prizes for students who turn in reading logs weekly also.

Literacy night will be held on Thursday, March 30th from 6-7:30 p.m. Please respond to this event on your invitation. Literacy night is a really fun family night so please join us!

Mrs. Polgar will celebrate Dr. Seuss week in class to celebrate the well-known author.

Monday, March 6 – “Green Eggs and Ham” Wear something to school that is GREEN. Please sign and return red  folders. New Tic-Tac-Toe spelling list sent home.

Tuesday, March 7 – “If I ran the Zoo” Bring a stuffed animal to school.

Wednesday, March 8 – “Wacky Wednesday” Come to school dressed wacky. (Wear your clothes inside out or mismatched).

Thursday, March 9 – “Fox in Socks” Wear silly socks to school.

Friday, March 10 – “The Cat in the Hat” Wear red, white and black day. Wear slippers to school and bring a stuffed animal to school. Students turn in spelling notebook and take spelling test for week.

Friday, March 24 – Spring pictures will be taken at school.

Wednesday, March 29 – Parent Teacher Conferences after school. I will send out scheduled conferences for parents I need to meet with by next week.

Wednesday, March 22 – Mini Martian Marathon Race training sessions will begin after school from 3:40 – 4:05 p.m. Parents are to pick their child up at 4:05 pm. Permission slip needs to be signed to participate in training. The Mini-Martian Marathon will take place on Saturday, April 22nd at 12:00 pm at Ford Field in Dearborn.

News for Week of February 27 – March 3

I hope everyone had a restful and fun break. We return to school on Monday, February 27. Please note the following events coming up in March. First day of March is on Wednesday and that means Spring is coming!!

Dates to Remember:

Monday, February 27 – Students return to school from Winter break. We have a recycling event from 11:45 – 12:30. Students will learn about recycling and keeping our Earth clean.

Tuesday, February 28, – PBIS celebration for the month of February will be a movie in the classroom. I will be showing the movie, “Trolls” in my classroom in the afternoon.

Wednesday, March 1 – We will have a kick-off assembly in the afternoon for March is Reading Month. Students will bring home a calendar of events and reading activities for March.

Thursday, March 2 – Dr. Seuss’s Birthday. NEA’s Read Across America Day. We do an author study on Dr. Seuss and begin reading a series of favorite Dr. Seuss books. You will receive more information this week on upcoming activities in class.

Friday, March 17 – St. Patrick’s Day. March family project is to create a leprechaun trap for St. Patrick’s Day. It is very difficult to catch a tricky leprechaun, but our class will have fun trying! Project information will go home on Monday. Project is due Wednesday, March 15.

Peek at the Week

Spelling words – March Tic-Tac-Toe spelling sheet will go home on Monday. Spelling words -“ad” family words – bad, had, sad  sight words – said, one, two.

Writing – We will start a new unit on narrative writing. Students will focus on the idea of having an opening sentence, supporting details, and a closing sentence. We will also work on the importance of transitional words such as; first, next and last.

Math – We will continue to work on addition/subtraction. Students will focus on number bond problems and missing addends. Fluently making addition/subtraction facts within five. Reviewing addition/subtraction strategies to solve problems.

Daily Five – We will focus on narrative reading/fiction books. Students will learn the elements of narrative writing and reading. We will also compare/contrast characters in stories.

Science – We are studying Life Science and learning about animals, plants and characteristics of living things. We will also start a new STEM unit on engineering in groups following a narrative story.

Social Studies – We are learning about where we live as we explore geography with maps and new vocabulary.

New technology resources – on-line directions for Khan Academy went home before break. Did you and your child go on-line and try it?

It is a great educational tool that helps with mastering math concepts taught in class and beyond. It also aligns with the NWEA test standards that students take in the Fall, Winter and Spring.

I will also be sending home information on EPIC books. This is a on-line reading  source that your child can read read and listen to books at home with an i-pad, computer or tablet.

Dates to Remember

Monday, February 13 – Return red folders and book bags if one was sent home. New spelling list/activity sheet and spelling notebooks will go home.

Tuesday, February 14 – Valentine’s Day. We will celebrate in the afternoon passing out Valentine’s to friends. Don’t forget to bring Valentine boxes to school for students to collect Valentine’s.

Wednesday, February 15 – Late start. Students start school an hour later.

Friday, February 17 – I will be out of school on Friday. My son is having oral surgery. There will be a substitute teacher and he/she will give the spelling test on Friday.

Winter Break – No school Monday, February 20 through Friday, February 24.

Tuesday, February 7 – 100 Day Projects are due.

Wednesday, February 8 – Library – Check in/out. I will be at a school conference in the morning and will return in the afternoon. So, there will be a substitute teacher in the morning.

Friday, February 10 – Hundred’s Day Party 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. Please let me know, if you can volunteer to work at stations.

Tuesday, February 14 – Valentine’s Day Party 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.

Peek at the Week

Spelling words – “am” family – am, ham, jam.  sight words – you, to, me. A new spelling Tic-Tac-Toe sheet will go home this week for the month of February. Please remember to include word family words and sight words for homework. Students are doing really well on the spelling tests. Students are able to change the first letter in word family words and make new words and are reading/writing their sight words fluently.

Report cards were sent home on Friday along with the NWEA student progress report. If you should have any questions, please let me know.

Please make sure to check your child’s blue folder daily for information and back pack for book bags. Each day or every other day a book bag will go home. Inside book bags are a reading log for parent’s to sign.

Also, red folders went home on Friday. I had troubles with my printer so I could not print out a new form. So, I wrote a progress note on the top of the last progress note. On Friday, I was having technical issues with computers and printers. It was one of those days!

Dates to Remember

Monday, January 30 – Students will bring home a February home project for our Valentine’s party. Also, information will go home regarding our 100 day party with a 100 day project.

Wednesday, February 1 – Library Check-in/out.

Thursday, February 2 – Groundhog Day. Will the Groundhog see his shadow? Early Spring or Late Spring?

Friday, February 3 – Mrs. Polgar will have another bake sale after school. We need donations of baked goods and volunteers to run the bake sale. Please let me know if you are available to help out. All profits from the bake sale help fund field trips and classroom materials.

Friday, February 10 – Hundred’s Day party will be held in the afternoon from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. We will need volunteers to help with stations and to help scoop ice cream for ice cream sundaes at the end of our party. Please let me know if you are interested in helping out.

Tuesday, February 14 – We will have a small Valentine’s Party held in the afternoon from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. Students will pass out Valentine’s to friends. We have 19 students in our classroom. (Please make sure your child only writes their name in the From section.) Do not fill out who it is TO.

Spelling Words for the Week – “an” family words. can, man, pan.  Sight words – like, we, my

Family word poems will go home weekly to help your child recognize word family words that we are studying for the week. Please read the poem with your child and have them point out the word family words we are studying. While studying for a spelling test have your child spell other word family patterns such as; fan, tan, ban. This will help your child for the spelling test.

This week we will start Card Marking 3. Report cards will go home some time this week from Card Marking 2.

Math – we will start a new unit on addition/subtraction and focus on fluency with math facts. We will also begin a math unit on money. We will study the value and characteristics of coins. Focus on counting to 100 by one’s, five’s, ten’s, and two’s. Also, recognizing numbers and building number fluency on the hundred chart.

Writing – last week we started a unit on informational writing on How to build a snowman. This week we will write how to brush our teeth and how to make a pizza. Students are learning a new style of writing focusing on organization, sequencing and order, transition word order.

Science – we will start a new unit on Living Things. We will explore living and nonliving things this week. What are the characteristics of living things and nonliving things.

Social Studies – Students will start a new unit on geography. Where we live, exploring maps and positional word vocabulary.

Daily Five – We will get back to reading groups and book bags will be going home now that assessments are done. Students will work on sight word fluency with sight word activities. Focus on reading strategies when we come to a unknown word. Working on onset/rime – word family activities.

Thursday, January 26 – PBIS Celebration for the month of January. Students may bring electronics to class (game-boy, i-pad, tablet, etc.) to play games. We will be celebrating with a technology day with computer games/smart board games).

Friday, January 27 – Half-day for students. Dismissal time is 11:45 a.m.

Friday, February 10 – One Hundred’s Day Party. Still checking into time. We will need volunteers for stations.

Tuesday, February 14 – Valentine’s Party. I have two volunteers for the party. So, I do not need volunteers. We have 19 students in our classroom. Students need to fill out who the card is FROM only. Please do not have your child fill out who they are giving it TO. It is easier for students to pass out cards if they fill out who the card is from.

On Monday your child will come home with a spelling notebook with a list of spelling words and an information sheet about the spelling program.

This week’s spelling words are the “at” word family.  at, bat, cat, mat. Sight words – and, the

Students will take assessments in math, social studies, science and reading. So we will review content through the week. The second report card period ends on Friday, January 27. Student report cards will be sent home the week of Jan 30th.

Writing – We will start a new unit on Informational – How To writing. We will write how to build a snowman to begin our unit. Students will learn transition words in writing – first, next, then, last. How to writing helps students learn organization in their writing. We will also look closely at the conventions of writing and making goals in writing – starting sentences with an uppercase letter, spaces, punctuation, neat writing, sounds and complete sentences.

Dates to Remember

Monday, January 16 – No school. Martin Luther King day.

Wednesday, January 18 – Late start. School begins one hour later. Library book return/check-out.

Friday, January 20 – Social Studies timeline project is due.

Friday, January 27 – Students report to school in morning only. Half day for all students.

Friday, February 10 – One Hundred’s Day party. We will celebrate 100 days of learning in February. I will need volunteers for this event. Time and details will be posted soon.

Tuesday, February 14 – Valentine’s Day party. We will celebrate Valentine’s with a small party. Students will pass out Valentine’s to friends. We have 19 students in our class. I will need a few volunteers to help with this event. Time and details will be posted soon.

This week students will take the NWEA Winter assessment in math and reading. Kindergarten students are scheduled to take the test on Tuesday, January 17th from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. and on Friday, January 20th from 9:30-10:30 a.m. In addition, students will prepare and take the District Writing – Opinion writing assessment this week. I have also been assessing students in reading and math for the upcoming report card period.

Since we have a short week with Monday off and a late start day this week we will have a spelling practice week along with a practice spelling test on the “at” family.This will get students ready for test taking and beginning  spelling unit assignments.

I will start our spelling unit the week of January 23rd. Students will be given a spelling notebook and will be responsible for studying their spelling words/sight words along with completing assignments for the week. A new list of spelling words will go home on Mondays and students will turn in their notebooks and take a spelling test on Friday.

I will be discontinuing the homework packets. We will be focusing on our spelling units, nightly reading and math assignments for the remainder of the year.

Happy New Year! Ready to get back into the Routine? This week we will be reviewing and starting new beginnings in content areas. Let the new year begin in Kindergarten!

Monday, January 9 – Welcome back to School! Please remember to turn in blue folders and Winter Challenge homework.

Wednesday, January 11 – Library check-in and check-out.

Monday, January 16 – No school. Martin Luther King day.

This week we will review sight words, letters and sounds for readiness to begin our weekly spelling unit. Spelling units will begin the week of January 16th.

We will begin a short unit in Social Studies learning about the concepts of time. A timeline project will go home so that your child has a better understanding of the terms past, present and future. The timeline project will be due Friday, January 20.

The cold weather is here! Please remember to bundle up your child with a hat, gloves, snow-pants, boots and a warm coat.

I hope everyone had a joyous and restful break! I want to thank parent volunteers for helping out at the holiday party. It was a success many students said, “They a had a fun day!” Also, thank you all for remembering me during the holidays with gifts, gift cards, holiday cards, school supplies, candy, and holiday wishes. Thank you!

Dates to Remember

Wednesday, December 21 – Late start. School starts one hour later.

Thursday, December 22 – PBIS celebration – Popcorn and a movie in your classroom. Students will celebrate good behavior for the month of December.

Friday, December 23 – Students can wear their pajamas to school. Mrs. Polgar’s Holiday Party will be 9:30-10:30 a.m. After lunch, students will enjoy the movie, The Polar Express with cookies and hot cocoa. Later, at 2:30 p.m. families and students will sing holiday songs in the gym before dismissal for the day. So, please come join us in the afternoon at 2:30 for caroling in the gym.

Please remember with the cold weather to have your child bundled up with a hat, gloves, warm coat and boots. Also, remember to pack shoes for your child to wear during the day. They need their gym shoes on Mondays and Thursdays.

Lastly, I will not be in school on Monday, December 19. My mother broke her hip and she will be having surgery on Monday.

Monday, December 12 – Family Holiday project is due. There will be a substitute in the afternoon in my classroom. I have a workshop to attend.

Upcoming Events:

Friday, December 23 – Holiday Party 9:30-10:30 a.m. in Mrs. Polgar’s classroom. Students can wear pajamas to school for our celebration.We need volunteers in the morning to help out with stations. We will be meeting this week to plan the party, so possible donations may be needed for the party. Please let me know, if you are available to help out at the party.

Also, I have changed the date of our movie day – Polar Express. It will be in the afternoon on Friday, December 23.

Holiday Break – students do not attend school from December 24 – Jan 8th. Students will return to school on Monday, January 9th.

Letter of the Week – Rr  Sight Words – for, go

Math – We will start a unit on geometry – shapes. Students will learn how to compare 2- Dimensional shapes through sorting, drawing shapes. Students will learn how to build a graph and learn how to analyze and compare categories and groups.

Social Studies – We will end our unit on Economics and close with services/goods and trade.

Science – We have begun a unit on Gravity/Physical Science. Students will explore and compare objects that fall to Earth. Why do they fall to Earth? Do they fall to Earth at the same speed?

Writing – We will continue our unit on Informational Writing – Reindeer. Students will write about what they have learned. We have been taking notes/reindeer facts to write our informational writing pieces.

Daily Five/Reading – Students will practice blending sounds in syllables. Building and writing CVC/consonant-vowel-consonant words. Reviewing short vowel sounds. Students will practice retelling short stories and identifying problems/events in stories.
