News for the Week of December 18-22

Monday, December 18 – No red folders went home this week. Return blue folders only.

Wednesday, December 20 – Late Start. Students report to school an hour later. We did not have library last week. So students will check-in and check-out books this week.

Thursday, December 21 – Holiday Party – Mrs Polgar’s class will celebrate with a Holiday party from 12-1 in the afternoon. A donation list will be sent out only to families signed up for the month of December to help out with party donations. So, please check your child’s folder on Monday to see if you are signed up for December.

Friday, December 22 – Howard will have their annual Holiday Sing-a-Along in the afternoon.

Winter Break – Monday, December 25 – Friday, January 5. Students report back to school on Monday, January 8.

Peek at the Week:

Letters of the Alphabet – We have covered all the letters of the alphabet. So we will review letter i.d, sounds and writing letters A-Z in upper-case and lower-case. Student goals by next card marking in January are to know letters and sounds of the letters of the alphabet. Also, writing letters with correct formation.

Vowels – We have been reviewing short and long vowel sounds AEIOU. Applying short vowel sounds in CVC words like; bat, mat, sit, pit, sun, fun, top, mop, pet, bet

Sight words – New sight words for week – run    find. We will also review sight words we have previously learned with a writing activity.

Math – We will review addition adding one more and taking one away, double facts, and solving addition equations vertically and horizontally.  Solving math story problems and reviewing graphs – how to read a graph and understanding greater than, less than and fewer math terms.

Social Studies – We will continue with trade and barter. Students will learn why we trade and barter in the economic system. What is a good trade or a bad trade? What does trade and exchange mean?

Science – We continue with our weather unit. Graphing and understanding weather conditions and how they effect us and the environment.

Writing – This week we will learn about reindeer in an informational writing unit.

Reading – We will compare stories about the Gingerbread Man, Gingerbread Baby and Gingerbread Boy. We will write a short response- If you were a Gingerbread boy or Gingerbread girl where would you run?

Reading groups – Please remember to read the books that are being sent home along with sight word ring cards in your child’s book bags. It is important that they are getting extra practice reading at home and practicing reading strategies at home.

Dates to Remember:

Monday, December 11 – Sign and return red progress folders.

Wednesday, December 13 – Holiday Boutique. Students will visit the Holiday Boutique at 1pm to purchase gifts. Students brought home an envelope to mark who they are buying for. Send in the exact amount needed in the envelope. All gifts are $2.00 each including tax. Checks should be made out to Howard PTA.

Thursday, December 21 – We will have our Holiday Party from 12-1 pm. I will be meeting with the homeroom moms this week for planning and families designated for the month of December will be notified what items we need donated for the party.

Peek at the Week:

Letters of the Week – Kk  and Uu    Sight word – play

Math – Composing numbers and adding one more – addition facts. Subtracting and taking one away. Analyzing graphs and making graphs. Learning about various graphs; tally graphs, bar graphs and picture graphs.

Writing – We will continue with a Narrative writing unit. This week we will focus on transition words first, next and last in our writing. First, I can ride my bike. Next, I can go to the park. Last, I can play on the slide. Students will learn to retell a story by sequencing with transition words.

Science – Students will continue to graph weather for December. Compare weather and distinguish elements of weather.

Social Studies – Students brought home a workbook on Good/Services. Please read the workbook together and let them show you what they know about goods and services. This week we will focus on trade/exchange in economics.

Daily Five – Comprehension Gingerbread Man. Read different versions of the Gingerbread Man and compare stories with comprehension and understanding.

Peek at the Week:    

Letters of the Week – Vv  and Yy   sight words – my    away

Math – We will work on addition facts with doubles; (1+1=2  2+2=4). Learn about types of graphs and how to analyze data from a graph. Working on recognizing numbers 1-50 on a number chart.

Writing – We will start a narrative unit on traveling. Writing about places we can travel to by air, land and water.

Science – We continue to study and graph the weather daily. Learning about severe weather.

Social Studies – Economics unit learning about goods and services. What are goods and services and how do we use them.

Enjoy your day outside. The weather is suppose to get colder by mid-week.

I hope everyone had a relaxing Thanksgiving break and had fun with your family. It is hard to believe that December will be here Friday!

Dates to Remember:

Wednesday, November 29 – Picture retakes. If you want to have your child have their picture retaken, please return their original picture packet for ordering.

Peek at the Week:

Letters of the Week – Rr and Qq   Sight words – on    color words – red, yellow, blue

Writing – We will focus on informational writing and learn about transportation.We will also learn about adjectives and use adjectives in our writing pieces.

Math – We will end our unit on Tally Marks. For practice at home students can write numbers 1-20 and practice writing tally marks with each number. We will start looking at number bonds and finding the missing number 1+ _=3  in an equation. Learning double addition facts (2+2=4   3+3=6) and concentrating on addition sentences and multiple ways to make a number for example; combinations of 5 –   2+3=5   3+2=5   1+4=5   4+1=5  0+5=5   5+0=5.

Science – Weather unit – studying severe weather.

Social Studies – We will focus on wants and understand the difference between needs and wants. Needs are things we need to survive; clothing, water, food, shelter, air. Wants are things we do not need to survive but would like to have; toys, candy, phone.

Daily Five – Producing rhymes and focusing on beginning sounds and ending sounds in words. Learning to stretch letter sounds in words in reading and writing.

During the Thanksgiving season, I think about things I am thankful for and I am so thankful for my Kindergarten class. They make me laugh and smile each day! I want to thank you all for attending parent teacher conferences this month. It was nice to meet you and discuss your child’s progress. Your support at home and partnering with me helps your child to be successful in school.

News for the Week of November 13 – 17

Dates to Remember:

Monday, November 13 – Red progress folders were passed out on Friday. Please sign progress report and return on Monday.

Wednesday, November 15 – Late start – school starts one hour later. Parent Teacher conferences start from 4-7 pm. We only have 20 minutes to meet so please be timely for your appointment.

Thursday, November 16 – Parent Teacher conferences start from 4-7 pm.

Friday, November 17 – No school for Kindergarten only. Teacher Professional Development day.

There will be no school the following week on Wednesday, November 22, Thursday, November 23 and Friday, November 24 for Thanksgiving break.

Letters/Sounds of the Week:  Ee, Ww    Sight words – it, is, in

Math – Last week we learned how to write an addition number sentence and how to add groups. The class really enjoyed writing number sentence stories! We also reviewed tricky teen numbers and learned there is one ten in a teen number. This week we will learn about geometry shapes – 2D and 3D shapes. We will build and identify various shapes in this unit.

Writing – We will continue to work on informational writing on Turkey’s. Last week we wrote a published piece on turkey features. Students wrote 2-3 facts they learned about a turkey’s features.This week we will learn more about turkey’s and write about new factual information.

Science – This week we will look at types of severe weather like; tornadoes and hurricanes. We continue to graph the weather daily using weather vocabulary.

Social Studies – Understanding vocabulary needs and wants. What needs and wants do we have?

Daily Five – We continue to focus on comprehension and identifying the problem and solution in stories. Focusing on reading strategies in text and asking; Does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense?

Friday, November 10 – Starting on Fridays I will be sending home a progress report each Friday. Parents will sign the report and return it in the red folder on Monday. This is communication tool that will help track academic/behavior progress.

Friday, November 17 – No school for Kindergarten students only. Kindergarten teachers professional development.

Peek at the Week:

Math – Teen numbers/Tricky teens, Addition number stories, Recognizing 2D and 3D shapes. By the end of the next card-marking in January students should be able to count by ones from 1-50, count by ten’s to 100, write numbers 1-20 and recognize numbers 1-20.

Writing – We will be starting a new unit on informational writing. We will begin with an informational unit – All About Turkeys.

Daily Five – Reviewing rhymes and practicing producing rhymes. Comprehension – learning about story elements; problem and solution.

Science – New unit on weather. Discovering different types of weather and seasons along with graphing the weather daily for the month.

Social Studies – New unit on Needs and Wants. Understanding the difference between needs and wants.

News for the Week of October 30 – November 3

Dates to Remember:

Monday, October 30 – Pumpkin Raffle. Howard teachers and staff have decorated pumpkins and will raffle them off on Monday and Tuesday this week. Tickets will be sold on Monday and Tuesday in the morning. Each ticket is $1.00. Send money in an envelope or baggie labeled with your child’s name. If you win a pumpkin, you will need to pick it up on Halloween at Howard by 4pm.

On Monday, at 3:45 we will have a short informational meeting about the new Leveled Literacy Intervention reading program. The meeting will be in Mrs. Smith’s Kindergarten classroom. This meeting is for parents and students in the LLI reading program. If you received a note in your child’s blue folder last week, your child is in the LLI reading program. Please consider attending, we would like to answer any questions you may have.

Tuesday, October 31 – Halloween parade at 1:30 pm. Costumes must be school appropriate and should fit over clothing. Masks, weapons, fake blood or violent themes are not allowed. Students will report to school wearing regular clothing. Costumes should come to school in a bag labeled with your child’s name. Children will be changing into their costumes when they return from lunch at 11:55 pm to get ready for the parade. After the parade students will change out of their costumes.

Thursday, November 2 – Library check in and check-out.

Friday, November 3 – Half day of school. Students report to school in morning and dismissal is at 11:45 am.

Letters of the Week – Hh and Ii.   Sight word – go

Writing – Narrative writing about favorite places we like to visit. Students worked on a narrative booklet on their visit to the zoo last week. They did an amazing job writing sentences and drawing illustrations to match.

Math – I am finishing up on math assessments this week for report cards. Number i.d., writing numbers 1-20, understanding greater than and less than with number comparison, counting by ones, tens and counting objects in groups.

Daily Five – I am finishing up on reading assessments for report cards this week. So, I will start up reading groups after assessments are finished. I will be assessing students for letter i.d., sounds, sight word fluency and leveled reading.

Science – We will finish up on physical science – Forces and Motion. Relationship between energy and forces.

Social Studies – We will finish up on the unit – How we Get along with Others.

If you did not get a chance to sign-up for parent teacher conferences on Open House night; I will be scheduling conference times later in the week. Parent – teacher conferences are scheduled for Thursday, November 9, Wednesday, November 15 and Thursday, November 16. I look forward to meeting with all of you and discussing your child’s progress.
