News for the Week of October 8 – 12

Dates to Remember:

Monday, October 8 – No math homework packets will go out this week. We have a short week of school.

Thursday, October 11 – Detroit Zoo Field Trip. If you have signed up to be a group chaperone, please meet at school for field trip information and group assignment. The bus will probably leave between 9:00-9:10 am. Students will ride bus and parents will meet at zoo. You can pay for parking at zoo. Parking fee is $8.00 per car. If you are meeting us at the zoo with your family, please meet at the front entrance and we will all go in together for group discount.

Please remember to pack your child a brown bag lunch for the zoo. Also, check the weather for the day so your child is dressed comfortably for cool or warm weather.

Friday, October 12 – 1/2 day of school. Dismissal at 11:45 a.m.

Theme: Pumpkins

Letters of the Week – Pp and Hh    Sight word of week – can

Math – Writing numbers 1-10. Focusing writing numbers in correct formation. Working with numbers 8-10 in different configurations. Counting to 10 and recognizing sums and differences to 10. Understanding group formations and array configurations.

Writing – Opinion writing unit. Students did a great job on writing an ” I like” booklet. Students wrote their opinion on their favorite food, color, and what they like about school. We are learning about the structure of a sentence in writing.

Social Studies – We have started a new program on social skills – Second Step. Students are learning about rules in school, fairness and responsibility. We are focusing on listening skills – eyes are watching, voice is quiet, body calm and ears are listening.

Literacy – Reading strategies – we have been focusing on concepts of print strategies; reading from left to right, using pictures to help with unknown words, and matching word to word in text. Reading comprehension – Sequencing a story, asking and asking questions about a story and making connections.
