I hope everyone had a relaxing break amidst the cold temperatures and snow. I am looking forward to hearing what everyone did over break and begin a New Year!
Before break we had a wonderful holiday party! Thank you to the parents and Mrs. Jeffries and Mrs. Ford our room moms for volunteering to help in the classroom to make our holiday special.
Thank you for the holiday gifts and gifts for the classroom that I received. I appreciate your generosity, support and help you provide throughout the year.
Monday, January 6, 2014 – Return to school
Wednesday, January 8, 2014 – Late Start – students report to school one hour later
Kindergarten
Kindergartners will start spelling program week of January 6. Spelling test will be on Friday, January 10. Spelling program information and spelling homework assignments will go home on Monday.
Spelling List – “at” family at, bat, sat Sight words – and, I, a, my
Writing – Narrative – Story elements; characters, setting, plot, problem, solution. We will also review later in the week for the District Writing Assessment – Opinion writing.
Math – We will focus on solving addition and subtraction problems along with writing story problems. Identifying, comparing and describing attributes of shapes.
Science – We will continue with unit on Force/Gravity
Social Studies – We will finish up on our unit on Economics/ Recognize situations in which people trade. Begin unit on History – Describing ways people learn about the past.
First Grade
First graders will practice spelling words with “sh” beginnings.
Spelling List – “sh” words – she, ship, shot, show Sight words – three, too
Spelling Test will be on Friday, January 10. Students are responsible for doing weekly Spelling homework assignments and turning their spelling notebooks in on Fridays of each week, this is part of their spelling grade.
Writing – Begin writing narratives with story elements; characters, setting, plot, problem, solution. Review opinion writing to prepare for District Writing Assessment in January.
Math – First graders will have a test on Unit 4, Friday, January 10. A study guide will go home on Monday. We will finish up on unit 4 and create number scrolls by ordering numbers through 100 or more. Introduction to addition facts, turn-around facts, and making 10 with addition facts. We will also review for unit 4 test.
Science – We will learn and use instruments used to measure temperature. Compare and describe clouds in our weather unit.
Social Studies – We will review vocabulary terms in economic unit. Finish up economic unit with trade.
