News for Week of December 9 – 13

Dates to Remember

Monday, December 9 – December Family Banner Project due.

Tuesday, December 10 – Students will visit Secret Santa Shop in the afternoon. An envelope for purchases will be sent home on Monday.

Wednesday, December 11 – Late Start. School starts an hour later.

Thursday, December 19 – Mrs. Polgar’s Holiday Party will be in the afternoon from 1pm – 2pm. We will need volunteers to help at centers to help with making ornaments, cookie decorating, and game activities. I will be meeting with room mom’s this week to plan the party. So there will be a sign-up sheet or room mom’s will notify parents for volunteer help.

Friday, December 20 – Nowlin School will have a Sing-Along in the afternoon at 2:30.

Kindergarten

Sight Words – me, you

Letter of Week – Q  handwriting/sound

Math – Focus this week will be using a number line and counting on and back on a number line. Intro to Top It Card game – comparing two numbers, using math vocabulary; more, less, higher and lower. Using a pattern block template using circle, triangle, square, parallelogram, trapezoid and hexagon shapes. Using the addition symbol and solving addition problems. Daily counting practice  by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.

Writing – Students have started learning about informational text features. We will review text features and begin using an informational text planner to help us plan our writing and begin writing facts about informational topics.

Science – We will investigate the concept of push/pull with various objects. On Wednesday, December 11 students may bring in an object from home that moves so we can further explore the concept of push/pull. A note will be sent home as a reminder.

Social Studies – We will review needs/wants and discuss the reason why people can’t have everything they want.

First Grade

Spelling Words – Words with “th” endings –   bath, math. Sight words – with, have, he.

Math – We have been studying measurement with non-standard units. We will use a ruler, tape measure to measure various objects. Explore data, shapes, and Base 10 blocks.

Writing – Students have started learning about informational text features. We will review text features and begin using an informational planner to help us plan our informational writing pieces. Students will write a topic sentence and facts about their informational topic.

Science – We will compare and describe severe weather conditions.

Social Studies – We will give examples and reasons why people cannot have everything they want. Vocabulary; scarcity, needs, wants.
