I hope everyone had a restful and fun break. We return to school on Monday, February 27. Please note the following events coming up in March. First day of March is on Wednesday and that means Spring is coming!!
Dates to Remember:
Monday, February 27 – Students return to school from Winter break. We have a recycling event from 11:45 – 12:30. Students will learn about recycling and keeping our Earth clean.
Tuesday, February 28, – PBIS celebration for the month of February will be a movie in the classroom. I will be showing the movie, “Trolls” in my classroom in the afternoon.
Wednesday, March 1 – We will have a kick-off assembly in the afternoon for March is Reading Month. Students will bring home a calendar of events and reading activities for March.
Thursday, March 2 – Dr. Seuss’s Birthday. NEA’s Read Across America Day. We do an author study on Dr. Seuss and begin reading a series of favorite Dr. Seuss books. You will receive more information this week on upcoming activities in class.
Friday, March 17 – St. Patrick’s Day. March family project is to create a leprechaun trap for St. Patrick’s Day. It is very difficult to catch a tricky leprechaun, but our class will have fun trying! Project information will go home on Monday. Project is due Wednesday, March 15.
Peek at the Week
Spelling words – March Tic-Tac-Toe spelling sheet will go home on Monday. Spelling words -“ad” family words – bad, had, sadĀ sight words – said, one, two.
Writing – We will start a new unit on narrative writing. Students will focus on the idea of having an opening sentence, supporting details, and a closing sentence. We will also work on the importance of transitional words such as; first, next and last.
Math – We will continue to work on addition/subtraction. Students will focus on number bond problems and missing addends. Fluently making addition/subtraction facts within five. Reviewing addition/subtraction strategies to solve problems.
Daily Five – We will focus on narrative reading/fiction books. Students will learn the elements of narrative writing and reading. We will also compare/contrast characters in stories.
Science – We are studying Life Science and learning about animals, plants and characteristics of living things. We will also start a new STEM unit on engineering in groups following a narrative story.
Social Studies – We are learning about where we live as we explore geography with maps and new vocabulary.
New technology resources – on-line directions for Khan Academy went home before break. Did you and your child go on-line and try it?
It is a great educational tool that helps with mastering math concepts taught in class and beyond. It also aligns with the NWEA test standards that students take in the Fall, Winter and Spring.
I will also be sending home information on EPIC books. This is a on-line readingĀ source that your child can read read and listen to books at home with an i-pad, computer or tablet.
