Dates to Remember

  Wednesday, November 13 – Late Start Date

Thursday, November 14 – Parent Teacher Conference 4-7 pm. Parent’s received conference reminder’s in their child’s blue folder. If you are unable to make a conference date, please let me know so we can reschedule.

Friday, November 15 – Mrs. Polgar is having a Bake Sale on Friday. We need parent volunteer’s to bake some goodies or purchase some packaged baked goods for Friday’s Bake Sale. All funds from the bake sale go towards field trips, and classroom materials. In addition, we need parent volunteers to help at the bake sale.

KINDERGARTEN

Letter of the Week – Ll Sound/Handwriting

Letter Sounds – We are working on all of our letter sounds daily. Please review sounds with your child at home also.

Sight Words – We will review sight words, I , a, the, like, see, my.

Writing – We continue to work on opinion writing. Student’s have really enjoyed opinion writing and are starting to write sight words in their writing and writing words to match their pictures. Student’s have wrote their opinion’s on topic’s such as;

Daily Five – Working on identify the first sound in a word, reviewing reading strategies on CAFE board and reviewing sight words we know in text.

Math – This week we are focusing on counting up to 100 by ones and tens. Counting on from any number. Comparing two objects by weight using a pan balance. Writing numbers 0-20. Counting objects in order. Comparing two numbers. Representing addition and subtraction with objects, and drawings. Measuring objects and comparing by length and/or weight.

Science – We will begin our science unit on weather. Students will observe weather changes from day to day and identify and name the seasons.

Social Studies – We will begin our social studies unit on Economics. Students will distinguish between needs and wants.

FIRST GRADE

Spelling Words – en & et family – pen, ten, hen, pet, get

sight words – help, yes

This week your child will bring home a list of sight words that they need to master reading fluently. Once they have mastered reading the list at home, your child will be assessed at school and will then be given a new list to practice. Each student will have a weekly individual list of sight words. As a parent you can help by writing the words on index cards and placing them on a ring or making a booklet of the lists that are sent home. Reading sight words automatically; increases fluency skills and decoding skills.

Reading Logs – I will pass out new reading logs this week. Thank you to parent’s that are supporting reading at home and reading with your child.Reading is daily homework that first grader’s need to be doing at home.

Writing – we continue to work on opinion writing. First graders are writing their opinion, reason for their opinion and concluding their opinion.

Math – this week we will focus counting and adding and subtracting on a number line. Understanding negative and positive numbers on a number line. Solving addition and subtraction word problems within 20. Adding and subtracting within 10. Counting from any number to 120. Telling time to the half hour.

Parents additional support you can give your child in math at home –  is having your child count and write numbers by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s to 120. Also, reviewing addition math facts with your child using flash-cards. Counting money; nickels and pennies with your child. Continue keeping up with Math Home-Links and visit Every Day Math website for games, unit review and more.

Science – we will begin a Science unit on weather. Students will identify what changes occur in the weather from season to season. Will identify the sun as an important source of heat.

Social Studies – we will begin a Social Studies unit on Economics. Students will distinguish between producers and consumers of goods/services.
