Peek at the Week:
Science – We continue our unit on the five senses. This week we will study the sense of touch and explore pumpkins with the five senses.
Social Studies – We will end our unit on How Do I Get Along with Others? with an assessment.
Writing – We have started opinion writing and will write opinion’s on our favorite book by Eric Carle, our favorite special – gym, music, library, art, or media. We will also learn to plan our writing with graphic organizers/planners in the writing process stages.
Math – We will continue practicing counting by ones to 30, by tens to 100, number correspondence, looking at teen numbers and practicing writing our numbers 1-10 in the correct formation.
Literacy and Daily Five – Last week, I introduced Read to Someone and we practiced building more stamina in reading, writing and word work. The kids really enjoy Daily Five and I enjoy it as well. During Daily Five I work with small groups in reading and writing while students are independently working on reading, writing or word work. We have been practicing reading our sight words in emergent reading books. Students have their own book boxes and keep their emergent readers with sight words we have learned in their book box.
Homework Packets – Last week, I sent home a packet to help you and your child with homework; an ABC sound chart, number chart and letter formation chart. Use these charts as helpful aids to assist you and your child with their homework. I would like to stress that the purpose of the homework packets is for you to work with your child with some guidance on skills being taught in school.
The beginning stages of writing is picture drawing and writing some beginning letter sounds. Have your child tell you what the first sound they hear in the beginning of a word is and have them write it down. To retell a story have your child draw a picture for the beginning, middle and end. Additionally, have your child practice reading and writing their sight words this will help them build fluency when reading and writing.
This is the beginning of the year and the beginning stages of reading and writing and more. So, we begin the year with training wheels in learning and during the school year the training wheels come off at different times for learners. I suggest doing a page a night for homework. Doing the whole homework packet at once is overwhelming and will tire your child. If your child is struggling with the work, please let me know.
Have a great day!
