News for the Week of February 24-28

Dates to Remember:

Scholastic Book Fair will be at Howard in library on Monday, February 24 – Friday, February 28.

Thursday, February 27 – Mrs. Polgar’s class scheduled for Book Fair 9-9:30 am. If you are interested in having your child purchase books from the book fair there is a order form in your child’s take home folder.

Friday, February 28 – Mrs. Alqaragholi (Leah’s mom) is a dentist and will visit our classroom and will give a dental presentation for National Dental Hygiene Month. This week we will focus on Dental care.

March is Reading month will be coming up so I will be sending out a calendar for guest readers to sign up to read to our class. If you or a relative would like to read to our class for the month of March, please let me know. Students really enjoy guest readers!!

Peek at the Week:

Daily Five/Literacy: Spelling words – “ig” word family – big, pig, dig Sight words – we a, and, come.

Word work – focus on short vowel “i” sound writing and blending words. Moving into L blends that begin with fl, bl, cl ( flap, flip, blend, blink, clap, climb). Substituting a beginning sound in CVC words. My word is sub if I change the “s” in sub to “t” what is my new word? (tub).

Comprehension – listening with understanding to directions. We will begin a unit in Social Studies on Geography and will focus on following directions. Focusing on cardinal directions – North, South, West, East and reviewing positional words such as, up, down, across, left, right, next to, behind, beside, etc.

Writing – We will start a new unit on How to Informational Writing. Focus will be on dental care and How to Brush Your Teeth. Students will learn sequencing in writing and apply transitional words; first, next and last.

Social Studies – Geography – we will begin our unit learning about maps and globes. Learning to read maps and globes and understanding what the study of geography is.

Math – Lesson 16 – Objective: Solve addend with unknown word problems to 8 with equations. Lesson 17 – Objective: Solve and put together with total in unknown word problems to 8 using objects and drawings. Lesson 18 – Objective: Solve both addends unknown word problems to 8 to find addition patterns in number pairs. Lesson 19 – Objective: Use objects/drawings to find how many are left. Lesson 20 – Objective: solve take from result unknown expressions equation using the minus sign with no unknown.
