News for the Week of September 24-28

Dates to Remember:

Monday, September 24 – Math homework packets will be going home on Monday. The packets will be due on Thursday this week only. Kindergarten does not have school on Friday. On the facesheet of your homework packet is an area to record stories you read with your child, it is not necessary to record story titles for the beginning of the year in Kindergarten. Just read with your child each night so they gain an enriched literacy experience at home.

Wednesday, September 26 – Peace assembly at 9am. for students.

Thursday, September 27 – Kindergarten will take the NWEA math assessment.

Friday, September 28 – No school for Kindergarten only. Kindergarten teachers will be attending professional development workshops for Kindergarten.

Please look at your child’s take home folder for information throughout the week as we begin sending homework packets home and possibly book bags.

Peek at the Week:

Letter of the Week: Oo    Sight word: see

Writing – Picking a small moment and writing a story. Drawing and labeling illustrations in story. Generating ideas of what we can write about. What is important to me? What do I want to share with a reader?

Working on writing our names with the first letter of our name beginning with an upper-case letter and the rest of the letters in our name are lower-case letters. Recognizing the letters in our name. Practice at home for success at school.

Math – We are reviewing numbers 0-3 and making sure we are writing our numbers in the right formation. Learning about numbers 0-10 and decomposing with objects, drawings and using equations to show our work. Working on missing numbers for example; 0, 1, _                    1,2,____     0, ___, 2           3, 2, __. Working on counting forward and back with mini-number lines. Vocabulary – before, after.

Science – We will continue our unit on Physical Science. We will investigate more on force and motion, speed and direction. How does the size of a ramp impact the speed of an object. Last week we learned about motion, push and pull and used our bodies to show movement. (You tube – Jack Hartman – Animal’s in Motion – they loved it!)

Literacy/Daily Five – this week we will continue to build stamina in Read to Self, Work on Writing, Work on Word and I will introduce Read to Someone. Students love reading with a buddy! Working on rotations during our Daily Five literacy block. We will also continue to look at print concepts in reading.

Have a great day!
