News for the Week of January 8 – 12

Happy New Year! I am excited to get back to school and see my Kinders!

We will be doing some reviewing from 2017 and moving on to new learning for 2018. I will also begin some assessments the next couple of weeks in reading, math and other content areas for the next report card period. We will also be taking the NWEA assessment in the next couple of weeks. We will be reviewing and preparing for this assessment as well.

Dates to Remember:

Monday, January 8 – Welcome back! Please return Winter break homework packets and Social Studies Timeline project.

Wednesday, January 10 – I will be out of the classroom attending a district math workshop. There will be a sub for the day.

Thursday, January 11 – Library day. Return/check-out library books.

Monday, January 15 – No school. Martin Luther King day.

Peek at the Week:

Sight words for week – not, do, yes, no

Writing – We will be working on a unit on Opinion writing. We will write to form an opinion and write a reason in our writing piece with illustrations/writing. Do you like Winter?  Why or Why not?

Math – We will review number i.d. numbers 1-50. Counting 1-50. Writing numbers 1-30. Working on before and after numbers along with number lines. Working on number bonds – learning strategies to figure out a missing number such as 3+ _= 5.  What is the missing number?  3 and what number equals 5?

Social Studies – Sharing our timeline projects in class.

Science – Thinking about how weather conditions effect our environment. Working on a STEM activity for understanding.

Reading/Daily Five – Review short vowel sounds – aeiou, beginning, middle and ending sounds in words to make CVC words such as sun, map, pen. Review reading strategies when we come to a word we don’t know. Look at pictures, look at first letter sound, sound out each letter and stretch letter sounds to say word.
