News for Week of March 20 – 24

Dates to Remember:

Monday, March 20 – “First Day of Spring” Red folders and Green reading logs are turned in for reading month. In the afternoon PTO will host an assembly with a visiting author for March is Reading Month.

Tuesday, March 21 – I will have a sub in the morning. I will be out of the classroom in the morning for a workshop. I will return in the afternoon.

Wednesday, March 22 – Library return/check out books. Mini-Martian Marathon training begins after school at 3:40 pm. We will have a guest reader, Firefighter, Michael Stetz will visit Kindergarten in the afternoon for March is Reading Month.

Friday, March 24 – Spring picture day. Spring picture forms will go home on Monday. If you want to have your child get their pictures taken, please fill out form.

On the March is Reading Month calendar students can wear their pajamas to school and read in class. I realize some students will be getting their pictures taken for Spring picture day. Pictures are usually taken in the morning so afterwards students can change into their pajamas.

I will be sending home parent teacher conference notices this week for parent teacher conferences on Wednesday, March 29. If you do not receive a conference notice this week and would like to meet with me, please let me know. I would be happy to schedule a meeting at another date.

Report cards will be going home next week. So, I will be finishing up on assessments in content areas.

Math Assessments

Counting and Cardinality – Counting by 1’s 1-75 or higher. Counting by 10’s to 100 and Counting by 5’s to 100. Additional assessments in math include; writing numbers 1-30, identifying numbers 1-30, solving addition/subtraction problems, recognizing and counting tens and ones with base blocks. Understanding place value – how many tens and ones are in a number.

Reading/Writing Assessments

Sight word recognition and spelling sight words correctly in writing. Writing a sentence and understanding sentence structure such as; beginning a sentence with a capital letter, ending a sentence with punctuation, including spaces between words. Does my sentence make sense? Can you read my writing? At the end of the year students should be able to write three sentences or more in writing.  Reading assessments include; comprehension, decoding words and reading fluently.

The above assessments are skills we work on throughout the year. This gives you some insight in part what mid-year assessments are comprised of.
