News for Week of January 11- 15

Dates to Remember

Monday, January 11 – The NED Show – is a anti-bullying show that will be held at 2:30 pm in the gym.

Wednesday, January 13 – Library book check-in and check-out.

Friday, January 15 – First spelling test of the year.

Spelling Notebooks – On Monday students will bring home a spelling homework notebook. Students will be responsible for studying their spelling words and completing their spelling assignments for the week. Students will turn in their notebook every Friday. A new list of spelling words will go in their notebook on Mondays. Please read the spelling homework activity sheet in your child’s blue folder on Monday.

Homework packets – I will be discontinuing the homework packets in place of spelling notebook assignments. I want to focus on spelling, writing sentences and sight word recognition for nightly homework. Students should have all letter and sound recognition by this time of year. If there is a  math skill or language skill I feel your child needs additional support with I will send home additional homework for support.

Social Studies – we are learning about time and studying the terms past, present and future. A timeline project will go home so that your child has a better understanding of the terms past, present and future. Directions will go home in your child’s blue folder on Monday. The timeline project will be due Thursday, January 21.

Assessments – for the month of January student assessments will be taken in all subjects. This week students will take the NWEA test in math on the computer and later in the month students will take the NWEA reading test. I have started assessing students in math and reading in the classroom. Once I finish up with assessments reading groups will start up and book bags will go home.

Cold weather – get ready for the cold weather and make sure your child dresses for the cold. Students will go out for recess everyday. The only time students do not go out for recess is when the temperature with a wind-chill drops to 20 degrees or below.
