News for the Week of September 28- Oct 2

Welcome to Mrs. Polgar’s Blog

I will post information weekly on my blog. My blog is a useful tool for parent communication and letting you know what is going on at Nowlin and in the classroom. I hope everyone enjoyed their break. Beautiful week of sunshine!

Reminder – Please make sure your child brings their blue folder to school daily. As we progress through the year more information will be going home for you to read. Also, please make sure to send a healthy snack to school for your child. Please no candy, cookies or chips! We only have 10 minutes for a snack break in the classroom. So be sure to pack a lite snack.

In the next week or so, I begin sending sending weekly homework packets home. For this coming week, please have your child practice writing their first name. Make sure only the first letter is upper-case and the rest of their name is written in lower-case letters. We have been practicing daily writing our names and learning the letters in our name.

Library – every Wednesday is library check-out and books are returned the following Wednesday to school.

A Peek at the Week:

Letters of the Week – We will review letters and sounds of Aa and Bb. We will work on the letters and sounds of letters Cc Dd Ee. We practice daily all the letters of the alphabet and letter sounds. Weekly we will focus on a letter of the day.

Sight words of the Week – I,  a,  can,  and.

We will begin focusing on the Pre-primer Dolch sight word list this week. I will be sending home a sight word list this week so you can review and practice words at home with your child. You do not have to review the entire list with your child at this time. Please work on the words posted on my blog with your child at home. Ideas are to use play-dough and make words, practice writing words, recognizing sight words and pointing out sight words in story books. Automatic recognition of sight words will help your child become a better reader.

Literacy – I have introduced the Daily Five literacy block and we have begun learning reading strategies such as, Where do I begin to read, Which way do I go with print. The Concept of Print – where is the front, back, top and bottom of a book. We have also reviewed where the title is on a book and what a title means and importantly what an author and illustrator is.

We have also begun building reading stamina in class and learning to begin reading pictures in books. This is the beginning of Read to Self. During the week I will introduce Work on Writing and students will independently work on writing during our Daily Five block.

Writer’s Workshop – We have been learning about the process of writing and will begin with the Pre-writing stage. We have been writing narrative stories and students’ have been doing a great job writing narrative stories. They have included characters and a setting in their stories. Beginning writing in Kindergarten is writing pictures. Wonderful beginnings!

Math – We have begun Math Talks in class and will be reviewing numbers 1-5. We have started Daily 3 Math workshop and students have learned how to work on Math by Self. This week I will introduce Math Writing. During math workshop we will focus on shape sorting, numbers recognizing numbers 1-5, writing our numbers, learning about graphs and how to read them, and counting one-to-one correspondence.
