I will be starting a new sight word program and discontinuing the sight word lists that I was using before. I have been using the Dolch sight word lists for assessment that corresponds with the Dolch Pre-primer, Primer, 1st grade, 2nd and third grade sight words lists. The entire list will be sent home this week, so you can review sight words with your child at home. First graders should know the Pre-primer, Primer and First grade list by the end of the year. Most students have mastered the words on the Pre-primer and Primer lists already with our weekly spelling tests, reading/word work in class. Again, information will be forthcoming this week.

First grade students by the end of the year should fluently add and subtract within 10. Students will master facts by 0’s, 1’s, 2’s, etc. until they move to a new fact list. You can help your child by getting a set of addition/subtraction flash-cards ( Dollar store sells them) Practice nightly so they become more fluent with math facts. We will also be reviewing place value with tens and ones using the calculator and base 10 blocks and cubes.

Social Studies/Science – We will be finishing up on economics in Social Studies and will begin reviewing for the Social Studies test. A study guide will go home this week to help prepare your child for the test.

Science – we will also finish up on the Science weather unit and review for the Science test. A science study guide will go home this week to help prepare your child for the test. Social Studies/Science test will be the following week.

Reading – I will be assessing students for the District Reading Assessment. Please make sure you are pulling book bags out of your child’s back-pack and signing the reading log. Student’s are returning book bags with no parent signatures. In addition, please have your child read the book(s) three times to help build fluency and then have your child do a retell – beginning, middle, end. Please read nightly with your child because they truly do become better readers and writers with support at home.
