A Peek at the Week:
First Grade
Spelling Words: Spelling Test #6 ar family; bar, car, far, jar, are. High frequency words: little, one, do (On Friday, I sent home spelling notebooks with this week’s spelling list). We will review bossy “r” rules.
First Grade Reading Logs: I see some of you have started your reading logs for October. Keep it up! Remember reading familiar stories helps build fluency. I will have a monthly incentive chart for reading and students will get a prize for reading.
Writers Workshop: We continue to work on personal narratives with detailed stories that have a beginning, middle, and an end. We also have been using transitional words in our stories such as; first, next, last, and then.
Daily Five: We will start Listen to Reading. Another favorite of students during Daily Five. We will review our reading strategies on the CAFE menu and learn how to retell stories with understanding and pick out a topic and supporting details.
Math: We are learning about money and learning to count combinations of pennies and nickels, identifiying coins and their value, and exchanging pennies for nickels. (Please remember to bring in 5 nickels in a labeled baggie) for our math activity on Monday). Later in the week we will solve number stories using addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems. Friday will be a review of math concepts that we have learned in unit 2.
There will be a math test on Monday, October 28. I will send home a study sheet indicating what your child needs to review for the test.
Please remember a student password was sent home that gives you access to math games, study units, and home-links to help your child progress in math. We had fun last Friday playing Penny Plate, Pennies in a Cup, Penny Dice Toss. These are fun games you can play with your child to increase counting, adding and subtracting skills.
Science: We will be finishing up on animal unit with classifying young animals based on characteristics that are passed on from parents. Later in the week we will learn the importance of sunlight and warmth in plant growth. We will experiment what happens to a plant if it does not get sunlight? What happens to a plant if it does not get water? We will record and observe like scientists do.
Social Studies: We will describe ways in which people modify and adapt to the environment. Introduce family traditions, customs in our classroom and beyond the classroom.
KINDERGARTEN

Writer’s Workshop: We continue to work on personal narratives, focusing on drafting and revising stories in the writing process. We are also writing/drawing pictures that have a beginning and an end. Later, in the week we will focus on using the ABC chart as a tool in writing and stretching sounds and initial sounds in writing.
Daily Five: Student’s will be introduced to Listen to Reading. Where they use the computer/cd player and listen to stories. Another favorite during Daily Five! We will work on one to one match with words during reading strategy groups. I will also assess for letter sounds this week.
Math: We will work on identifying coins/sorting, building a number board, learning tricky teen numbers/ordering and identifying. Kindergartners have also been joining the first grader’s with EveryDay math games; Penny plate, and Penny Dice Toss. Friday’s is our math game day we kindergartners sure do enjoy!
