Dates to Remember

October 14 – 16, 2013 – Students are on vacation and return on Thursday, October 17, 2013.

Monday, October 7 – Kindergarten homework packets along with red and blue folders are to be returned on Monday.

Monday, October 21 – October Family Project due. Information will be in blue folders on Monday.

Information will be forthcoming regarding Fall/Halloween party that will take place at the end of the month.

I have started reading groups along with sending home book bags. Inside the book bag is a reading log for parent’s to sign. Please have your child return the log in the bag and read the book(s) at least 3x, this will help build their reading fluency. If you feel your child needs more time to read a book at home,  please keep the bag at home and return the book bag another day.

Kindergarten

Letter of the Week – Ff/words/sounds and handwriting.

Sight Words  – I, see, a, the, review color words.

Daily Five –  We have started Daily Five rotations of Work on Writing, Read to Self, Work on Word and I will introduce Work on Read to Someone (buddy reading). Kids love buddy reading during Daily Five!

Math – positional words, recognize and write numbers 1-10, identify patterns, count by one’s up to 20 and from any given number.

Social Studies – Responsibilities at school and home.

Science – 5 senses – smell and review of 5 senses. Observing and exploring the fall season with science vocabulary and materials.

Writing – We continue to work on Personal Narratives. Students are adding details, setting, and characters to their drawings/writing.

First Grade

Spelling List – hot, pot, hop, mop, top. High frequency words – like, not, on, blue

Please remember to have your child write sentences for each of their spelling words in their spelling notebook. This is reflected in their spelling grade.

Daily Five – Introduction/review of Work on Read to Someone.

Math – First grade skills are counting by 5’s, 2’s and 1’s to 120. We have been working on writing 5’s up to 120. (Please work with your child at home on writing their 5’s up to 120). I will provide a  120 chart for home to help with Home-link assignments. Every Day Math Home-Link assignments are also part of your child’s math grade. Please make sure you have your child do their math Home-Links at home and return the next day.

We are also writing the number that comes before and after a given number. Practice writing numbers in the right direction 1-10, learning to tell time by the hour and half hour, understanding midnight, noon, a.m. p.m. and clockwise (time vocabulary), exploring lengths, straight-edges and dominoes.

Social Studies – History – using artifacts, journals, pictures to learn about family and school life in the past.

Science – We will review the life cycle of a butterfly and other animals. Identifying characteristics that passed on from parents to young.

Writing – We are working on Personal Narratives- adding transition words, using a three-part plan, beginning, middle, and end. Using a setting and characters in our writing.
