Oakman Kindergarten Bulletin
Writer’s Workshop: We are moving into a new writing prompt this Wednesday, we have been working on informational writing last week. We will also focus on opinion writing this week. First, I am asking the students to slow down their writing from whole stories (pictures) to use letters and sounds to label items and make lists. This will enable students to take their time to record the first sounds and other sounds that they hear after that. Secondly, this lesson teaches students that writing may go beyond storytelling and can be used as a tool for learning across the curriculum. Finally, this supports the idea that writing, science, social studies, and learning about the world is important.
Literacy: During Daily 5 we have been working on a variety of choices. These choices include read to self, buddy reading, word work, listen to reading, and work on writing. Reading is so important read to your children at least 10 minutes a day and record it on the behavior chart each month. Our letter this week is Gg and our sight word is go. Please return your child’s Gg bag tomorrow with 3 items that begin with the letter Gg.
Poem Books: Thank you for your support of the Poem Books that are coming home on Friday! I hope you are enjoying hearing your child read their poems to you. Please encourage your child to point to the words as he/she reads to you. You can also ask you child to identify some print concepts like pointing to the “first word” of the poem and the “last word” of the poem. Ask your child to point to a “letter” and then point to a “word”…point to a “long word”… point to a “short word.” Please remind your child to bring their Poem Book back to school Monday signed my mom or dad.
Social Studies: We are discussing needs and wants, we began the lesson reading If You Give a Pig a Pancake. We are incorporating the setting (where the story takes place) and characters (who is telling the story) and who is the author and illustrator of the story.
Math: We are focusing on comparing numbers and putting numbers in order. We will continue to practice correct number formation. The children have a new game in their bags Monster Squeeze with the directions to play at home.
Winter Gear Update: With cold weather now upon us, please be sure to have your child’s coat and snowpants (all black ones get easily mixed up) clearly labeled with their name. Any help you can give them with practicing to put gear on with some degree of independence would be helpful! I am doing a lesson on putting snowpants on first, then boots, then coat and lastly mittens and hat. Thank you for your help!
Thank you to all the parents whom want to volunteer to be the secret reader I will send you a confirmation letter this week.
Reminder: Book Fair after school today, and can drive (donate any canned goods to help the needy) the class with the most donations will have a pizza party!! I pays to help others…
Bundle up and have a great week!
