Team Parana News for September 4, 2018

September 4, 2018
Dear Parents,
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend.
This week:
Spelling: Our first list to practice comes home on Tuesday, September 4th. The rule to practice is CVC, I and a. You and your child can practice any way you’d like. Some ways to practice would be to practice a different way each night. Monday: write the words 3 times each in a different color. Tuesday, write each word in rainbow colors, Wednesday, make flashcards, Thursday: write rhyming words for each word, and then Friday we will take the test. Tests will be graded as soon as possible and most likely returned on the following Monday.
Reading:
Reading bags/folders will not come home this week as we are currently working on building reading stamina in school and learning students’ book levels so that they can pick good fit books to match their levels. Reading bags/folders will be sent home in a few weeks.
If you would like your child to have reading homework but it hasn’t been assigned yet, feel free to have them choose good fit books at home or read books on myon.
Math: We will begin our math program this week where homework can be found in the “Return Me” section of the folder.
NWEA testing: Nwea testing is given 3 times per school year. Once in the fall to see where students begin the year, once in the middle to monitor progress, and once at the end. Students in 2nd grade are tested in Reading, Math, Science, and Language. We will take our first 2 tests this week on Wednesday and Thursday in the morning.
Have a wonderful week.
Sincerely,
Gina Parana

Dear Parents,
It has been a wonderful first week with your children. We have spent the week going over procedures and routines. The students are very eager to learn the new procedures and rules.
This week we have also been learning about each other: our favorite foods, colors, activities, books, birthdays, etc. I shared with the students some things about me: I love peanut butter and chocolate, reading, swimming, and my favorite color is red. I told the students my birthday is January 4, 1971. We integrated Math by creating a graph of our birthdays.
During our reading block, we went over “Read to Self”, picking good fit books, and 3 different ways to read a book. Ask your child about these things.
Some important dates to remember:
Friday, August 31: No school
Monday, September 3, No school
September 10: Book fair preview
Homework:
So far our homework has been: taking things home that were not finished in school.
Next week we will begin math homework on certain days.
Blog:
Please subscribe to my blog. You can find it by going on to the Dearborn Public Schools website, find a teacher, and type in your email.
Have a great weekend!

February 27

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a wonderful week off from school. The weather was so beautiful!
We will now have a great week at school!

Spelling: disappear, improper, miscommunication, antisocial, import, export, invisible, distrust, mislead, disagree, divide, division, focus, subtract, thrown, throan, aloud, allowed, past, passed.

Reading and Writing: We are studying narrative writing as well as narrative reading.
We will be using strategies we’ve learned to review and practice test items similar to what will appear on the MSTEP test that all 3rd, 4th and 5th graders will take coming up soon in March or April.
Thank you for logging minutes read on the planner and returning the planner to school each day!

Math: We continue to study long division. Please practice at home as much as you can. This concept is very hard for students. We have been taking 3 digit numbers and dividing them by one number. There was a video on youtube that had a little saying to remember the steps in dividing. Divide, multiply, subtract, bring down.
Kahn Academy: I am hoping by now that everyone has logged in to Kahn Academy. Please let me know if you were unable to do so. I hope students have practiced as well. The really nice thing about Kahn Academy is it has the students work on things that they struggled with on the NWEA. It reviews concepts for them, lets them watch videos of things they may have been confused on, and lets them practice.

Science: We are studying the EArth, sun, and moon:)

Social Studies: We continue to learn about our government and the roles of each branch of government: executive, judicial, and legislative:)

Have a wonderful week!

Sincerely,
Gina Parana
