Week of October 1, 2018

Hello families!

Students who aren’t finished with any of the NWEA tests will be finishing those Monday. We are continuing our study of ratios this week:

Monday: Math Workshop. If students don’t finish the PPS pg 15-16 or the CER during class rotations, those 2 pages will be homework.

Tuesday: Quiz on Rates and Unit Rates

Wednesday: Equivalent Ratios homework

Thursday: Showing Equivalent Ratios homework

Friday: Graphing Equivalent Ratios homework

Week of September 24, 2018

Hello 6th-grade families! I hope you’re enjoying the wonderful weather this weekend.

Most students were able to finish the NWEA math test last week. If your student did not, he or she will be finishing during one of the make-up sessions this week. I was really proud of their efforts – they really took their time and tried their best!

On Monday students will be given back their Lesson 1 quiz that was taken on Friday. Any student who earned a 70% or less has the option of re-taking the test for a higher grade during lunch on Wednesday or staying after school that day. This retake is completely optional and will be a different version than the original test (same content though). These grades have been entered into MiStar already so students don’t need to wait until tomorrow to see how well they did!

I won’t be at school on Tuesday the 25th. I don’t know yet who the guest teacher will be, but I look forward to getting a great report from whomever it is!

We will extending our study of ratios into Unit Rates this week

Monday – Understand Unit Rate hw

Tuesday – Ratio math stories hw

Wednesday – Finding Unit Rate hw

Thursday – students will be completing an independent practice activity on Finding Unit Rates. No homework this day unless students don’t finish. This will be done in the Instruction Book, pages 14-15

Friday – Math Workshop day. If students don’t finish during the Independent Station, they need to finish pages 15-16 out of their Practice and Problem solving book Reason and Write.

Have a great week!

Week of September 17, 2018

We’ve got a lot happening at Woodworth this week!

Monday homework – solving ratios

Wednesday – finishing math NWEA. Wednesday is also our first late start of the school year. School begins an hour later than usual with the first bell ringing at 8:50. We will be having a fire drill in the afternoon.

Thursday – math workshop

Friday – short ratio quiz. I will also be asking the students to create a ‘mission statement’ for themselves to be used for a classroom display. Lockdown drill in the afternoon.

Have a great week and Go Hornets!!

Week of September 10, 2018

Good evening 6th-grade families!

Lots of reminders for this week. Code of Conduct letters as well as the Household Survey (if your student received one last week) need to be turned in Monday. Monday is also School Picture day. ALL students will have their picture taken, whether or not you are purchasing a photo package. Student photos are on the student IDs.

Wednesday evening, 6-7:30, is the Woodworth Open House. There will not be a formal parent meeting but you will be able to see your child’s classrooms and meet the teachers. There isn’t a specific schedule for the evening, so feel free to come at any time!

Friday, September 14th, is a half-day for students with school ending at 11:05.

Students will be receiving their math books on either Monday or Tuesday. Each student will get 2 math books; a more traditional textbook that can be taken home to help with any homework and a 2nd book called Practice and Problem Solving. This book will stay in the classroom; it contains all of the homework assignments that students can pull/tear out to complete and turn in.

In math class this week, we will begin our first 6th-grade unit of study: Ratios and Proportions. On Monday students will take a short pre-test to help me better meet the needs of the students based upon their prior knowledge. There will be no assignment given but students will be bringing home a Family Letter to tell you more about what to expect in the unit.

Tuesday homework – describing the relationship between 2 patterns

Wednesday homework – comparing quantities using ratios

Thursday homework – solving ratio questions

Unless the plans for the week change drastically, there will be no assignment given on Friday other than bellwork. Instead, we will be doing a ‘community building’ activity within the classroom.

Have a wonderful week and I hope to meet many of you on Wednesday at Open House!

Week of September 3, 2018

I hope everyone has enjoyed the long weekend! My husband and I have been busy getting our kids ready for their first day of school tomorrow and trying to keep everyone cool in this heat!

Our focus in math this week is learning the routines and practices that our math program is based upon this year. We will be solving, discussing our answers/strategies, supporting those answers with evidence and reasoning, and comparing solutions/strategies with others.

Tuesday – we’re playing a Kahoot game to get-to-know our classmates. Then finishing Math is Everywhere tiles

Wednesday – homework

Thursday – homework

Friday – homework

On most days students will have class time to work on homework – it’s possible these assignments will be completed during class.

Have a wonderful week!
