Week of March 11, 2019

With 3 weeks to go until the end of the card marking, we will begin our unit on Expressions and Equations this week. Retakes for both the Lesson 13/14 quiz and the Unit 2 test will be given this week for students who earned a 70% or less and would like the opportunity to improve their scores. On Thursday afternoon I have a meeting with the 5th-grade math leaders to discuss strategies that they are using with students in order to improve the transition from elementary school math to middle school. I will be discussing with each class the behavior expectations; please have a conversation with your student as well about being on their best behavior.

Monday – Expressions with Exponents, PPS pg 161-162

Tuesday – Writing & Evaluating Expressions with Exponents, PPS pg 163-164

Wednesday – Evaluating Expressions with Exponents, PPS pg 165-166

Ms. Olzak out for the afternoon – In class Order of Operations review activity, Math Masterworks homeworkPizza Slices homework

Friday – Evaluating Exponents guided practice, PPS pg 167-168

Have a great week!

Week of February 25, 2019

Hello families,

Sixth-grade students who will be taking the WIDA test will be doing so on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this week. The test will be taken in the morning and then we will have a modified class schedule in the afternoon (students will still attend all core classes, they will just be shortened).

In math we begin Lesson 13, Absolute Value and Comparing/Ordering Positive and Negative Numbers. Because this content ties so closely with Lesson 14 (Coordinate Plane), the students will be taking one quiz that combines the content of both lessons. That quiz won’t be until the following week and there will be a study guide given.

Monday – Absolute Value homework  Students can just write the correct answers into the boxes rather than cut and paste if they prefer.

Tuesday – PPS pg 131-132 homework Comparing/Ordering positive & negative numbers

Wednesday – In-class activity: Absolute Value Scavenger Hunt

Thursday – PPS pg 141-142 homework Graphing on the Coordinate Plane

Friday – PPS pg 145-146 homework Finding the distance between points on the Coordinate Plane

I will be sending progress reports home with the students on Monday so please look for those and have a conversation with your child about his or her progress! Have a great week.

Week of February 18, 2019

Happy Monday 6th-grade families,

I hope all of you enjoyed your 4-day weekend. My family spent the weekend in the western part of the state visiting some long time friends. We enjoyed lots of sledding and playing along the frozen waves of Lake Michigan (I had no idea the waves freeze like that – it was incredible!).

This week in 6th-grade math we will begin learning a bit about the concept of negative numbers. Students won’t be doing any calculations with positive and negatives at this point; we’re just trying to build a solid foundation so that when they move on to 7th grade they will understand things like deposits represent positive integers and withdrawls represent negative integers.

PLEASE remind your student to complete their weekly 60 minutes of Khan Academy recommended NWEA practice. The grades of many students are quite low due to completing zero minutes each week. If your student does not have access to a computer, iPad or cell phone, he or she is more than welcome to spend 20-30 minutes after school a couple days a week to complete the required 60 minutes.

Tuesday – Understanding and identifying positive and negative numbers. NO homework

Wednesday – Continuing to identify positive and negative numbers using real-life situations (height above/below sea level, temperature, deposit/withdrawl, etc). PPS pg 123-124 homework

Thursday – In class review and summative writing assignment Put It Together

Friday – Lesson 12 quiz

Have a great week!

Week of February 11, 2019

Hello again 6th-grade families!

This will be a short week for us in Dearborn; Thursday is a half-day of school with dismissal at 11:05. There will be NO SCHOOL on Friday (Feb. 15) or Monday (Feb. 18).

I changed some of the activities last week so you’ll be seeing a lot of what I had originally planned being done this week instead. We will be continuing our M-Step practice during bellwork time with an emphasis on test-taking strategies.

Monday – Least Common Multiple, PPS pg 115-116. Khan Academy minutes due by the end of the day.

Tuesday – GCF/LCM puzzle, Lesson 11 study guide

Wednesday – Lesson 11 Quiz. Error Analysis homework

Thursday – Time telling activity with analog clocks (most of the students don’t know how to tell time except on a digital clock!)

Thank you for all of your continued support. Please keep checking your student’s progress on Parent Connect and enjoy your mid-winter break!

Week of February 4, 2019

Last week was pretty much the craziest week of school I’ve seen in my 8 years of teaching! It was fun sharing stories with the the kids of what we all did on our snow/cold days off.

This week in math we are wrapping up Lesson 10 and getting right into Lesson 11 – Least Common Multiple and Greatest Common Factor. We’ll only be spending just a few days on these 2 concepts since they are review from 5th grade.

Monday: Lesson 10 Quiz, CER to be done after the quiz (homework if not finished before the end of class)

Tuesday: Begin Greatest Common Factor, PPS pg 113-114 homework

Wednesday: LATE START DAY! Least Common Multiple, PPS pg 115-116 homework

Thursday: We’ll be reviewing GCF/LCM by using blocks to build different scenarios. Then students will complete the LCM/GCF puzzle for homework

Friday:  Reviewing GCF/LCM again by completing a Venn Diagram, Lesson 11 Quiz, Error Analysis to be done after the quiz (homework if not finished before the end of class)

Have a great week!

Week of January 14, 2019

Good evening families,

We are entering into the last week of the 2nd card marking. All missing work is due by Wednesday, the 16th in order to receive credit. Students choosing to complete the IXL extra credit have until Friday the 18th to turn in.

The activity originally planned for last Friday had to be changed and therefore a homework assignment was given. Ordering decimals and Rounding decimals

Monday and Tuesday of this week students will be taking the math portion of the NWEA test.

Wednesday – adding decimals PPS pg 91-92

Thursday – subtracting decimals PPS pg 93-94

Friday, the last day of the marking period, students will be taking a very short (15 questions) mid-term exam. All students will be given this test as a way to determine how much of the math content they retained. We will spend some time reviewing for the mid-term on Wednesday and Thursday.

Friday is a half-day of school with dismissal at 11:05. The following Monday, January 21, there is no school in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. And then Tuesday and Wednesday, January 22 and 23, are both half-days as well with dismissal at 11:05.

Please continue to check your child’s progress on MiStar and as always feel free to email me with any questions or concerns.

Thanks and have a great week!
