Week of February 18, 2019

Happy Monday 6th-grade families,

I hope all of you enjoyed your 4-day weekend. My family spent the weekend in the western part of the state visiting some long time friends. We enjoyed lots of sledding and playing along the frozen waves of Lake Michigan (I had no idea the waves freeze like that – it was incredible!).

This week in 6th-grade math we will begin learning a bit about the concept of negative numbers. Students won’t be doing any calculations with positive and negatives at this point; we’re just trying to build a solid foundation so that when they move on to 7th grade they will understand things like deposits represent positive integers and withdrawls represent negative integers.

PLEASE remind your student to complete their weekly 60 minutes of Khan Academy recommended NWEA practice. The grades of many students are quite low due to completing zero minutes each week. If your student does not have access to a computer, iPad or cell phone, he or she is more than welcome to spend 20-30 minutes after school a couple days a week to complete the required 60 minutes.

Tuesday – Understanding and identifying positive and negative numbers. NO homework

Wednesday – Continuing to identify positive and negative numbers using real-life situations (height above/below sea level, temperature, deposit/withdrawl, etc). PPS pg 123-124 homework

Thursday – In class review and summative writing assignment Put It Together

Friday – Lesson 12 quiz

Have a great week!

Thank you for contacting me. Yes, unfortunately Yasmina was caught cheating on her math quiz last Thursday. I was very surprised because this is just not like her. She has been very distracted in class and it’s effecting her grades. I’ve tried talking to her to see if something is going on that has caused the change in her behavior but she either doesn’t to talk with me about it or she doesn’t even realize that her behavior has changed. Whatever it is, I hope we can all work together to help get Yasmina back on track!I can give you a call in the next couple of days if you’d like to talk further.
      Have a good evening
