All grades in the music room are currently working on learning several holiday songs to prepare for the all-school holiday sing-a-long on Friday, Dec. 20.
Kindergarten is currently learning about opposites in the music room including fast and slow tempos. Ask your child to demonstrate fast and slow singing and movement!
1st graders are learning all about melodic direction – music going up and down. Ask your child to sing a melody that goes up and down or move like a slide whistle!
2nd graders are learning all about solfege and how it connects to the music that we sing. Ask your child to sing patterns using Sol, La, Mi and Do! One of the songs that includes Sol, Mi and Do is Mouse, Mousie which can be seen below.
3rd graders are also learning solfege. They continue their work from 2nd grade and add Mi, Re and Do to the scale. A popular song to learn about scales in music class is “Do Re Mi” from “The Sound of Music.” You can listen to it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drnBMAEA3AM
4th graders are preparing for recorders and learning and reviewing the notes on the treble clef scale. Here are some ways that we remember the pitches on the lines and spaces of the treble clef.
5th graders are comparing and contrasting different versions of the same Holiday Songs using venn diagrams. Ask your child if they can tell you some similarities and differences of the songs in these links:
Recorder order forms were sent home with Ms. Hespen’s class on Monday, Dec. 2. In order to purchase a recorder, these order forms, along with the $5 cost of the recorders, are due Monday, Dec. 9.
Please turn them in on time to ensure our order of recorders will be shipped before the holiday break! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Thank you!
4th graders will be learning how to play the recorder after our holiday break. This is a great way for students to learn how to read music, coordination to play the notes and learn how to sight-read. The recorder is also a great pre-band or pre-strings instrument as it teaches the students many of the same things they need to know when they enter the band or strings program in 5th grade.
4th graders may choose to order a recorder from me for $5 or they can borrow one from the school-owned recorders (borrowed recorders will stay at school). Order forms went home today! They are due back next Monday, Dec. 9. A picture of the order form can be seen below.
This is an excellent unit that I’m really excited to teach and excited for the students to learn! It would be great if everyone had their very own recorder to take home and practice! If you have any questions, please let me know!
We will be having a holiday sing along the last Friday before our Winter Break, Dec. 20. All students will be singing traditional songs in the gymnasium. It’s a great way to send everyone off into the holiday season. Below is a link to a YouTube playlist of some of the songs that we will be singing. This is for any student who would like to practice at home.
