Wednesday, April 29

Good morning everyone!!

A couple notes for today’s calendar assignments….

Many of you noticed that the ReadWorks is the same as Monday. That is because it was a longer assignment, so we wanted you to have more time. If you already finished, you’re all set!!

As for math, I am going to post a Lesson 3 video I took of myself doing some problems to Google Classroom, as well as some Khan Academy videos to help you with decimals.

Science– I added the Mystery Science assignment to Google Classroom, and you have the rest of the week. Click the link to watch the videos there. When you are ready, you will answer the questions linked to the Google Classroom assignment in the Google Slide, and just hit ‘turn in’ when you are done! That’s it! 🙂 The activity is optional- but send me some photos for extra credit if you try the activity out.

Social Studies– keep working on those business projects! I am attending a training on our new meeting platform today, so I hope to meet with you next week to share those projects.

Finally, I plan on doing a practice meeting on Big Blue Button tomorrow at 12 PM! We won’t be presenting our projects, just practicing logging onto the program. I’ll post instructions for you, but this meeting is optional!

Parents, if you would like to take the Howard Remote Learning Survey, click yesterday’s blog post! Thanks!!

Have a great day 🙂

Tuesday, April 28

Hi everyone!

As I said yesterday, our Google Meets are currently postponed. I am going to plan an optional meeting session Thursday at 12 PM to get students onto the new platform we will be using for meetings. I will post directions before that time.

Business projects will be presented next Tuesday- I received a few more amazing projects last night! Thank you Jacob, Hussein, Mahdi, and Jake for sharing so far! 🙂

Please continue to reference the calendar for daily assignments. I posted a math video of me talking you through some of the problems on Google Classroom. I will also add some Khan Academy videos for you to watch too.

Finally, Howard has created a parent survey regarding at-home learning. You can access the survey by clicking the following link. Parent Survey

Have a great day everyone!

Update on Google Meets tomorrow

Hi everyone,

I apologize for two posts in one day. However, Google Meets are still not allowed for tomorrow. I will be attending a training on using BigBlueButton, which is the new meeting platform, on Wednesday. We may try to do a practice run-through of meeting up on BigBlueButton Thursday, but it’s optional. I’ll give you directions on how to log on later this week. Fingers crossed it works!!

In the meantime, I have ABSOLUTELY LOVED the two business projects that were shared with me so far. Hussein shared an AWESOME car dealership project on Google Slides. Jake shared an AWESOME hand sanitizer business with me on a Google Doc, and he made a video demonstration to go with it! Talk about going above and beyond!! You now have until NEXT Tuesday to present to us when we have the live meetings all worked out. If you would like to send me your finished project before then, I would love that. But you will present to your classmates NEXT Tuesday, May 5.

Finally, since we can’t meet tomorrow, I made you all a little video of some of the math problems I would have done during our meeting. You can view that video on Google Classroom. Hopefully you find it helpful, and hopefully it works!

I’ll still be available tomorrow even though we can’t use Google Meets, so feel free to reach out. 🙂

Week of April 27-May 1

Hi everyone,

I apologize for another longer post. I will try to keep them shorter throughout the week. Parents and students- please read carefully! I will post this on Google Classroom for students too.

First and foremost, a GIANT shout-out to the students who finished EVERY SINGLE ASSIGNMENT and Zearn last week. They are Jake, Jacob, Maya, Julia, Celine, Ali S., Mohammed Z., Mohamed D., Abraham, Ali Y., Xavier, Mahdi, Jonah, Mia, Jana, and Hussein! Give yourselves a HUGE round of applause and pat on the back!

Boys and girls, as we start a new week, please keep track of each task on your daily calendar. It will be so much easier to complete the tasks each day and stay caught up!!

Next, we (4th grade teachers) felt the frustration with Module 5 as fractions became increasingly more difficult. We wanted to make things easier for everyone. So, we decided to move everyone to Module 6, Lesson 1 on Zearn. We are asking you to do the same in your Succeed books. I will do my best to walk you through the lessons each week. The goal is to get you exposed to some decimals now, and this should be easier than taking on the more advanced fraction content without physically being in school. I will continue to do my best to walk you through the lessons throughout the week and during our meetings. We also decided to use Friday as a catch up day for math- see calendar for details.

Speaking of meetings, Google Meets are no longer supported by the district. To read Dr. Maleyko’s statement on this, please visit his blog. This means that on Tuesday, you will not be able to join our Google Meet as we have been. I am going to attempt to learn the platform the district is asking us to use. It is called Big Blue Button, and is accessed through iLearn. I will let you know later Monday evening or Tuesday morning if we will still be able to meet on Tuesday through this new platform. Once I have them, I will pass on the directions to you. This is frustrating for us all, so thank you in advance for your patience.

I would still like you to have your business projects completed and ready to share by Tuesday. The video with my instructions is still available on Google Classroom. If technology doesn’t work and we can’t meet Tuesday, we will share them as soon as possible.

Last note for today- I use the written response portion of your ReadWorks and Flocabulary as a writing grade. Please make sure to remember to use complete sentences and restate the question. I want to see you putting the information in your own words (not copying and pasting) and using text evidence. Notice that you have today (Monday) and Wednesday scheduled for your ReadWorks assignment, so take your time!

Please reach out with ANY questions!!

Friday, April 24

Good morning everyone!

To all those who celebrate, I wish you a happy and healthy start to Ramadan!

Try your best with the Edulastic quiz on Google Classroom today. It should be linked on the classwork tab on Google Classroom. I am looking for effort and participation- it doesn’t need to be perfect. 🙂 We also have a plan to help make math a little easier starting next week, so I will share more info then.

As for the social studies business project, please continue to follow the directions I linked here and on Google Classroom. I will link them again below. I also recorded myself talking about the project when we had our Google Meet, and I uploaded that video to Google Classroom if you our your student needs a review.

Students can feel free to use any medium to present their work as long as they have all 6 components for the project! This could be a Google Doc, Google Slides, poster board, regular paper, whatever works for your student! I know Jana created a 3D box diorama with her restaurant business, and is writing down the components to go along with it, which is awesome. Abraham is drawing his on paper as well as listing each component. These are both great examples!

I want your student to have fun and be creative while learning and working on this project. 🙂 The goal is to share during our Meet next Tuesday. Feel free to reach out with any questions, but I am just looking for creativity and an understanding of the basic concepts listed in the instructions.

On that note, here is a breakdown of the elementary grading criteria for this card marking:

Elementary Grading Criteria – COVID-19 School Shutdown

For the fourth marking period students will receive one of the three marks (Meeting, Progressing, Limited Participation).

  • Meeting:  regularly submitted work and attended check-ins
    • Accuracy of work assessed on standards/graded/recorded in MiStar
    • High participation
  • Progressing:  Submitted most assignments and attended some of the check-ins
  • Limited Participation:  with one of the following explanations
    • Rarely or did not submit work (may be required to attend summer school)
    • Rarely attended check-in sessions (may be required to attend summer school)
    • Family hardship during the time of instruction (summer support offered)

As you can see, the focus is on effort and participation!! Accuracy of work will be assessed, and I will provide feedback, but my main concern is that your child is attending the sessions, completing assignments, and putting in their best effort. I hope that eases some of the feelings of being overwhelmed- I promise you we all feel that way, and we are working together to make this as smooth and beneficial as possible. 🙂

Thursday, April 23

Hi everyone!

Please read through to the end of today’s post. 🙂 I try to keep them short, but I also want to make sure we are all getting the same information!

I heard that Zearn may skip you past lesson 34. If that happens, awesome! 🙂 You get a freebie pass to the next lesson. However, for help with lesson 34 in your Succeed book, try these videos:

We will be doing a quiz on Edulastic tomorrow. You should be able to take the quiz through Google Classroom. I want you to try your best, but remember this is our first time trying this. It’s okay if it doesn’t work perfectly.

Here is a review for the quiz if you would like to try it:

Module 5 Topic D Quiz Review â€“ Lessons 12-15 (Add and Subtract Fractions) https://www.khanacademy.org/math/4th-engage-ny/engage-4th module-5 (Scroll down to Topic D. There are three practice sections and a practice Topic D quiz.) You do not have to sign-in.

One more important thing- I know that the last couple lessons have been especially tough. If you get to a point in the homework where you are struggling, feel free to stop. We are grading you on your participation and effort. We know that the math is especially hard right now, and we promise that we are working on ways to help make it easier!

Parents, remember that any exposure to this material is helping your child for next year- it doesn’t have to be perfect. We want you all to be happy, healthy, and safe. <3 My challenge for the day: Get creative, do an Earth Day activity from our calendar, and have some fun as a family!

Wednesday, April 22

Good morning everyone!

First of all, happy Earth Day! If you do any of the Earth Day activities from our calendar, be sure to send me a photo! Don’t forget to keep working on your business projects, too. 🙂 If you missed our meeting yesterday, I am going to upload a recording of the directions I gave to Google Classroom.

Wow, I have to say that looking over your ReadWorks assignment from Monday, I was so impressed. I don’t think I have seen so many 100%s on ReadWorks in a long time. Maybe ever! Great job everyone 🙂 Remember to keep using complete sentences that start with a capital and end with a period, as well as using text evidence.

I hope you are all still reading good books! Remember, EPIC is a free site with lots of books for you to read! If you need the class code or want to try it out, let me know.

During our Google Meet sessions, I am going to continue doing some math problems each time, as well as sometimes going over some of your ReadWorks articles. It’s really important that you try to attend these meetings every Tuesday (girls at 12 and boys at 1). It is just like school where we want to see your attendance, and your participation counts toward your grade! There may be additional Google Meets throughout the week, but you MUST attend each Tuesday.

Don’t forget — your special area teachers are having a meeting with you today if you would like to attend! I already posted this info here and in the Online Learning page on my blog, but I am going to share it once more just in case:

A message from your Specials Teachers: We would like to invite you to the Specials’ Google Meet! This is a fun opportunity to connect, share and ask questions of your Specials Teachers! Our meet for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades will be on Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. The nickname for the meet will be specials2420 and will stay the same for our meeting each week. We hope to see you there 🙂

Tuesday, April 21

Happy Tuesday everyone! Please keep following the calendar. You know the routine 🙂 Girls, I hope to see you at 12 PM for our chat/Google Meet today, and boys, I hope to see you at 1 PM! We will be talking about our business project and doing a few math problems together, so please have a paper/pencil ready to go 🙂 The link, as always, is on the top of our Google Classroom page.

A message from your Specials Teachers:

We would like to invite you to the Specials’ Google Meet! This is a fun opportunity to connect, share and ask questions of your Specials Teachers! A message from the district:

The Dearborn Public Schools Continuity of Learning Plan has been approved by our Wayne County RESA  Intermediate School District (ISD) Superintendent. This is required action under Governor Whitmer’s Stay at Home Executive Order (E2020-35) which suspended in-person instruction for our students during the remainder of the school year.  Approval of the plan allows our district to continue to receive funding from the state, but more importantly, it provides our staff members with a plan that will support student learning from April 20, 2020 through our last day of school on June 11, 2020.

The complete plan, a summary of how the plan impacts elementary, middle and high school students, along with  grading criteria for each grade level can be found at:

https://dearbornschools.org/services/dearborn-public-schools-continuity-of-learning-plan/

In case you missed it, to access report cards from 3rd card marking, please follow these steps:

Following is some information on how parents can access report cards data in MIStar ParentConnect. Please note that if you have more than one child, you should be able to see data for all your children and you do not need separate logins for the different schools (if your children attend more than one school).

How do parents login to ParentConnect? To login to ParentConnect, parents need their PIN and password; this is how it is obtained: Parents go to the Dearborn Schools’ website (dearbornschools.org) and then the ParentConnect link. If they don’t know the login info, they click (Need Your Login Information) link and it will prompt them to enter their email address (as provided to the school and entered in MIStar), and then click Submit. This process emails them their PIN and Password. After logging in, click on “report card marks” module.

Monday, April 20

Hi everyone, I hope you had a great weekend!

You can find our calendar for the week under the Remote Learning page on my blog, but I will also add it below this post.

A few important reminders for this week….

Our district has released the Continuity of Learning Plan for the rest of the school year. It is available on Dearborn Public Schools’ home page, as well as Howard School’s blog. Please look it over (parents) so that you understand the expectations and direction the rest of the year will take in regards to participation, grading, etc. If you have any questions, I will do my best to answer!

Math: Please continue to keep up with Zearn. Most of you are doing an EXCELLENT job with this!! I have just a few students who need to make sure you are doing a lesson a day, or more, to get caught up. This is part of your math grade, and your ‘attendance’ or participation grade, too. As far as the Succeed pages go, please make sure to always do #1, 2, and 3– if you get stuck on the rest, it is okay to stop, but I suggest at least giving them a try. I highly recommend you watch the Eureka Math Videos I have linked under a page in my blog, as well as check with the homework solutions I posted.

Reading: Most of you are also doing an awesome job with ReadWorks/Flocabulary. You MUST write in complete sentences to earn full credit! I have several shoutouts of students who are doing an amazing job with writing complete, detailed sentences that include text evidence– Way to go Mia, Ali S., Mohamed D., Celine, Mahdi, Maya, Jonah, Jacob, Ali Y., and Mona!! I am sure there are more of you too, but those are the names that stuck out for this week’s shoutouts. Please check for feedback on all your assignments. I respond in the comment section of ReadWorks/Flocabulary often.

One more note on reading– if you need new books, Epic is offering teachers and students free access for the rest of the school year. They have a lot of great books to read on there, full length chapter books even, that you guys already love to read at school! (Yes, even some graphic novels). If you would like the class code for that, let me know and I can get you set up.

Google Meet for this week will be tomorrow, 4/21. Girls at 12 PM and Boys at 1 PM! We will try to keep this schedule for the remainder of the year. We will talk about your social studies project at that time. Try to come up with a ‘rough draft’ – can be just a list of ideas- to share then. 🙂

Friday, April 17

Hi everyone!

Oh my goodness, snow in mid April! I am not sure if I am excited about it…I am ready for long walks and spring weather, but it is pretty!

One new thing for the calendar today. I am going to post the directions for our business project here and on Google Classroom. Please look over the directions and start thinking about what type of business you might want to create. We will be talking about this during our Google Meet next Tuesday. If you want to write down some notes and ideas to have ready for discussion, that would be great!

Other than that, please check over the calendar and make sure that you have completed the weekly assignments. Then enjoy your weekend 🙂

I have had quite a few meetings this week/this morning, so I am trying to get back to emails as fast as I can. Thanks for your patience!
