Day 4- Online Learning

Good morning everyone!! Do you believe it is already Thursday?!

You have been doing a great job keeping up with our activities- a few of you need to complete the ReadWorks from yesterday, don’t forget!

I have a few shout-outs: Jacob sent me a story that I can’t wait to read this morning. Feel free to send me your writing or even just a journal of your day! Emma has been keeping me smiling with her sweet email updates! Ali Y. sent me a picture of his reading homework on Class Dojo, which was great to see the complete, well-written sentences!! Mona showed me her great setup at home with her guinea pig Lisa, and Celine showed me her awesome desk too!! Yay!!

I am going to try to set up a Google Hangout for us all to video chat, hopefully on Monday. Not required- but just a fun way for us all to see each other and chat for a while!

This is a note for you and your parents: Your schoolwork should only be taking you a couple hours per day. I know it’s hard and different, but you are fourth graders- almost fifth graders- and I trust that you can do the reading/social studies/science almost all by yourselves!! The math might be a little trickier-but with the help of YouTube videos, Zearn tutorials, and the homework helper, you should be in pretty good shape. I know your parents want to help you as much as they can, but they still have work to do too. None of us expect this to be perfect- all I ask is that you make your best effort. I am checking to see that your work is complete and providing feedback, but my biggest goal is just that you are working hard and keeping your brains active– these are enrichment opportunities, and you will be very happy when we get back to school that you worked so hard. 🙂 I hope that eases some of the anxiety some of you may be feeling. ❤️

Here is today’s math video:

Only one more day this week!! No work on the weekends, but I will try to post a list of fun activities you can do with your family around your house while you enjoy your break.

I have been touring some national parks online using this link, and reading a good book. I have even been trying out some new recipes with Mr. Nosewicz!! And of course, walking Bo. 🙂

Have a great day and I’ll talk to some of you soon!

Day 3-Online Learning

Hi boys and girls!! I hope you are all doing well 🙂 I am missing you already!

I am noticing that almost everyone is completing their daily assignments- I am so proud of you. I know this is not easy, but your time at home is making you into more independent learners and thinkers!

Don’t forget in addition to your school work, it is a great time to learn something new or do a task you have been putting off! You can walk outside, help your parents with chores, clean your room, help read to a younger sibling, or cook a new recipe! In addition to my chores, I have been reading a good book, and I also have been watching some Disney movies– and guess what?! I have been catching so many examples of figurative language in the movies- similes, metaphors, hyperbole, personification, you name it!! You can click here to listen to some too….

Email me and let me know what figurative language you have heard in TV you are watching or books you are reading, and let me know what activities you are doing besides schoolwork!! Remember, don’t forget to help your parents and siblings too.

Here is a picture of Bo at my parents’ house. He is helping my brother with his law school work. 🙂 You can also send me pics of your work or what you are doing on Class Dojo or email if you would like!

Now on to today’s assignments….Remember, I suggest you start with Zearn, watch the tutorial, and THEN work on the problem set with help from the video! Today’s math lesson video:

There is a new ReadWorks article today. You are always welcome to reach out with questions or send me your reading response journal on Class Dojo if you would like me to see your work 🙂 Don’t forget to check the comments on Read Works or Flocabulary to see your scores and my feedback.

Keep up the great work!!

Day 2- At Home Learning

Good morning everyone!!!! This will be a longer post, but please read as I may answer some questions some of you had.

I apologize for the lateness of this post. I was working on finishing up a fun extra credit project for you guys next week- I think you will enjoy! 🙂

I have really enjoyed chatting with some of you yesterday. To my students- please, please feel free to email with any questions, comments, concerns, or just to say hi!! I want to know what you’re thinking about your reading, how you are doing at home, etc.

Thank you to all of you who completed yesterday’s activities!! Please remember that it is very important to do the ReadWorks and math the day it is assigned so that you can stay ahead. I will be contacting a few of you today to see if I can be of any assistance in making sure this is getting done.

I have had a few questions about what your daily routine could look like. My suggestions:

Math- about 1 hour. Start with the listed Zearn lesson- watch the tutorials, take your time. Then, you will be familiar with the material when you try the Problem Set and Succeed pages. I have linked videos for all of Module 5 under the links section on my blog- but here is that list again: Math Help Videos
These videos will walk you through each type of problem and match exactly what is in the problem set. If you are stuck on a problem, please skip it and move on!! Keep in mind that the problems get increasingly more challenging as you continue throughout the pages- so the last problems will always be the hardest.

Reading- about 1 hour. I would suggest starting with the ReadWorks or Flocabulary for 30 minutes. Note that we alternate ReadWorks and Flocabulary every other day, but you have a week to complete each Flocabulary assignment.

The reading for 30 minutes and responding in your journal could be a nice quiet time activity for mid-afternoon or evening, just as we normally would ask you to read 30 minutes a night.

Science/social studies – 30 minutes to 1 hour. These projects should take you a while, and you have the entire month to do them! Please do not stress or rush. The goal for this week is to start making a Google Slides presentation about energy and motion using pages F4-F17 in your science book. You could include important facts, vocabulary words, something interesting you read, pictures you found, etc. HAVE FUN!!

I will be grading your online assignments each day. I have already commented back to almost everyone.

Please remember that this is new for everyone, and IT IS OKAY!! We want you to do your best, but we also know that this is going to be a unique challenge. I am so proud of all of you using this opportunity to increase your independence and work on your learning!

I am always an email or Class Dojo message away– please, don’t hesitate. I’ll be in touch soon. 🙂

Good morning! Day 1 :)

Hi everyone! I miss seeing your faces, but I am looking forward to connecting with you today. 🙂

Today’s tasks are listed in the daily calendar. One change is that Lesson 11/12 was already ripped out of your Succeed book. Therefore, you just need to do those lessons in your Learn book.

I will be online- so feel free to email me, comment on Google Classroom, or Class Dojo. Some of you have sent me pictures of your home school set up- I love it!! Great work!! Keep them coming 🙂

Have a great day! Don’t forget to take a recess break- walk around the block with your family, get some fresh air, and have fun.

Week One starts tomorrow!

Hi everyone!

I hope everyone is healthy and well.

Our online calendar starts tomorrow with Day One of learning. I have had a few questions about the ReadWorks/Flocabulary assignments- each assignment will be posted on the day/week it is listed on the calendar. That way, students are staying on track and not getting too far ahead or behind. However, I realize that not everyone will always be able to get online during our normal school hours, so I will keep the assignments open longer than just the school day. If you are having trouble with Internet access, please reach out!

I will also be sending out Class Dojo invites for parents. It is totally fine if you would prefer not to sign up, as I will be available via email, but many parents prefer the messaging style of Class Dojo, and if that is easier for you to communicate, it is just another option.

I plan on messaging and commenting with the students on their assignments as they are completed-please continue to encourage your children to do their best, take their time, and watch the tutorials on Zearn especially- this will help them learn the math lessons. There are also Zearn Youtube videos that correspond to each lesson. I will try to add those to the links if anyone needs that.

I will keep you updated- looking forward to ‘hearing’ from everyone tomorrow as we get started. 🙂

Online Learning Calendar

Hi everyone!

Thank you all SO much for taking time out of your day to make it to school today and pick up your child’s materials. I appreciate your support of your child’s education.

Attached you will find the Online Learning Calendar for the next 3 weeks. I will add the listed assignments to Read Works and Flocabulary on the corresponding days. I will also be adding directions and information on some of the Week 2/Week 3 activities when we get there.

I am always just an email away. Please have your students feel free to email me with any questions or concerns, or just to say hi.

More updates soon!

Week of March 2 + Kleenex/hand sanitizer!

Hi everyone!

Due to the short week last week, we are keeping last week’s spelling words (the Latin roots list). Students will be responsible for matching the root to its meaning and spelling both correctly.

In math, we are working on fractions. This can be a tricky concept, so please keep making sure that your student is working on the homework and Zearn each night.

Everyone brought home March is Reading Month information on Friday. Check the calendar for details taking place each day! Note that Wednesdays are spirit days and Fridays are when reading minutes are due.

Finally, we are running a bit low on Kleenex/Clorox wipes, and BIG bottles of hand sanitizer. If you would like to donate any of these items, we would really appreciate it!!

Thank you!!

Tomorrow, February 28!

Hi everyone! I hope you enjoyed BOTH your snow days!!!! I definitely did- what a nice surprise.

I didn’t get a chance to remind the students today since we weren’t in school, but they filled up their brownie points earlier this week, and voted to have a movie/snack day tomorrow afternoon. We will stick with that plan. I have a snack to bring in for them, but they are also welcome to bring in a small bag of chips or popcorn for themselves if they would like. They can also bring in a small drink- juice, lemonade, or even a SMALL can of pop 🙂

I will have a few DVDs to choose from, but if they want to bring in a rated G Dvd for us to vote on as well, that is fine by me!

Finally, we should be able to visit the book fair tomorrow. If not, we will go Monday.

Thanks! Enjoy your evening!!
