Working hard during daily 5
Daily 5
Welcome to our classroom! As we begin our year together, I have some important information you need to know about the expectations of this class. First, I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Jamy Sherlock and I am honored to be your child’s teacher this year. I earned my Bachelor’s Degree from Eastern Michigan University and my Master’s Degree from Concordia University, in Leadership and Administration. This is my First year teaching in Dearborn Public Schools. It is important for your child to feel safe and comfortable because with this comes a well-managed classroom filled with opportunities where children can experience and discover, take risks and implement practices taught by the teacher. My teaching will consist of various types of lessons, being highly sensitive to different learning styles and the diversity of children that exist within any classroom. Also, I find it important and beneficial to integrate all subject matters across the curriculum. I look forward to a very fun and productive year! I’m very excited about teaching 5th grade at Snow, and I’m even more excited to be sharing it with you and your child. I am looking forward to meeting you, and getting a chance to get to know you. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to call my classroom voicemail at 313-827-7436, or the office at 313-827-6250, please leave a message, and I will return your call as soon as possible.
I am looking forward to an exciting and meaningful year!
Sincerely
Miss. Sherlock

School Hours
Our school hours are 8:40 a.m. to 3:35 p.m. (with the entry bell ringing at 8:35 a.m.) Students should wait on the black top on the upper elementary playground facing the Houston St. I will pick them up when the bell rings. In order for students to transition smoothly into the day, they should arrive promptly. If your child arrives after 8:40, they will be marked tardy. If your child arrives more than 10 minutes late, they are marked absent and need to be signed in through the office prior to arriving to the classroom. For safety, most of our outside entry doors are locked during the day. YOU MUST SIGN IN AT THE OFFICE IF YOU ARE VISITING THE BUILDING.
At the end of the day, the students will be dismissed out the same doors from the morning. Please do not wait outside our classroom door, as it is distracting to the students. Please decide on a meeting place in the lobby or outside. Your help with this is appreciated and please pass this information on to any other adult who picks up or drops off your child. Please make sure your child is picked up on time. If you are late, your child will be waiting for you in the office, not in the classroom.
Some important things to know about our classroom:
Student Planner-All students will be bringing home a student planner every night. Each child will write down his/her homework in the student planner along with any important reminders for parents. A parent/guardian MUST sign the planner every day. This ensures that a parent has seen what your child has for homework and makes sure that homework is completed and returned to school. This is one of the most important forms of parent/teacher communication we have, so please make sure it is checked daily. If the planner gets lost, another can be purchased in the office for $5.00.
Reading-Your child will be expected to read every night. A goal of 20-30 minutes would be appropriate. I understand that students are very busy with after school activities, so try to set up a specific time each day that will work best with your schedule. If there is a night when reading isn’t possible, have your child read extra on a few other nights. There is no specific reading material required. Your child can choose things like a magazine, book, newspaper, article, or stories found online. Whatever your child is reading, you will always want the reading to be meaningful. Your child should be connecting with the literature and hopefully not just reading to get it over with!
Classroom Rules/P.B.I.S
The following is a list of general expectations that I have for all students:
- Always do your personal best.
- Raise your hand and wait to be called on.
- Be an active listener
- Use words to solve problems.
- Play safely.
- Be kind and respectful to everyone.
These objectives will be taught and reinforced consistently. Please take a moment to discuss each of these with your child and review them often, as we will in class.
Snack–Children will have the opportunity to eat a snack each day. I will not be providing the snack, so this will need to come from home. All snacks need to be healthy. Please do not send in chips, candy, or cookies as a snack. Soda or juice will not be allowed as snacks. I also request that students do not share their snacks with others due to allergies/religions. Donated snacks are greatly appreciated!
In choosing a snack for your child, please keep the following things in mind:
- Protein based snacks help your child full and fueled.
- Try to avoid snacks that are high in sugar content (i.e. Fruit Roll-Ups, Pop tarts, etc).
- Snacks should be independently/easily handled by your child. Please do not send in items that need to be cut or peeled by an adult.
- Some suggestions: fruit or vegetables, cheese and crackers, pretzels, trail mix, yogurt (please provide your own spoon), nuts, and granola bars.
Birthdays-We enjoy celebrating birthdays so please let me know at least a day in advance if you plan on bringing in a special treat for your child to share with the class. The ideal time would be towards the end of the day, but will vary depending on our class schedule. Also, in order not to hurt any child’s feelings, please do not distribute party invitations in our classroom unless every child in our classroom is invited to the party. Otherwise, please distribute invitations in a different manner outside of the school environment.
Water Bottles-I do encourage students to bring water bottles into the classroom. Students should bring their bottles home a couple times a week to be washed and sanitized. Please make sure the bottle has a working cap and no leaks before sending it to school.
How to contact me– I believe that communication is the key to a great parent-teacher relationship. I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions or concerns at any time. You can send me a note, email me at Sherloj@dearbornschools.org, or call me and leave a voicemail at 827-6250, and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
Also, I will be posting all important notes and reminders on my blog page. You can access the blog at https://iblog.dearbornschools.org/mssherlock. You will find a copy of this blog page address inside your child’s homework folder which will go home daily. Please sign up for my blog as soon as possible, so that you will receive reminder emails to check important information that has been posted.
Once again, I am very excited to be your child’s teacher this year. I’m looking forward to having a wonderful and successful school year with both you and your child!
Sincerely,
Jamy Sherlock

Dear Parents and Guardians,
I just wanted to take a moment to let all parents and guardians know that the 2013/14 school year is off to a tremendous start! I really enjoy this class and they are already working very hard.
We have spent a lot of time properly establishing all the rules, procedures, and expectations for an effective, and safe, learning environment. In addition, we have already dug deep into the curriculum and are learning new concepts daily.
