Week of Sept 19th-23rd

NWEA Testing is starting this week. We will take the Reading NWEA on Tuesday morning. Please make sure your child arrives to school on time.
Thank you to all of the families that attended Open House last Thursday evening. Thank you to the families that have donated items from our apple tree! Very much appreciated .

If you haven’t gotten a chance to sign up for Parent Teacher Conferences starting in November, please contact me and I will let you know what dates and times are still available. Conferences are scheduled for November 10th, 16th, and 17th. You can also stop in to sign up as well. The list will be outside of my room

Students should be reading every night to improve their comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and vocabulary. I’ve sending home a reading log for students to keep track of how many minutes they have read at home each week. Students should also be going onto MyOn and working on improving their Lexile score. The username on MyOn is the student’s id number and their password is their birthdate (MMDDYYYY).

We are  working on being responsible. Please make sure your child is doing their homework and returning it every day. Students are required to fill out their planner also  and have it signed every day as well.

Just a reminder camp forms and payment are due September 27 Tuesday. If you have any concerns please contact me ASAP.

Thank you for all your help and support!

Service squad and safety patrol

The students were offered the opportunity to attend a service or safety patrol meeting today if they wanted to participate. Ask if they chose to come to the meetings Mr. Maurer (Gym Teacher) or Mrs. Doner  held today? This is an excellent opportunity for leadership within the building.

Week of Sept. 13th-16th

Welcome back after the extended weekend. Happy Eid to those families that are celebrating!

A reading log at home tonight and must be filled out and  returned every single day. Students are required to read 20 to 30 minutes per day.

Please make sure Planners are signed and returned every day.

As 5th graders, students will be given 10 spelling words at the beginning of each week. Students will do a few activities using these words at home they are also expected to study the list of words for the test on Friday. There homework needs to be turned in on Friday. A list of suggested activities to do with your child at home is being sent home today. Every Friday, the test will include the 10 given words plus 5 “cold” words that are a mystery to the students but follow the pattern for the week.

Please continue to follow the arrival and dismissal procedures that were set up at the beginning of the year. A pink note went home on Friday with a few changes to the arrangements, however 5th grade remains the same.

Open House is this Thursday, September 15th from 6:00-7:30 at night. Stop by the classroom to meet Ms. Sherlock and see all of the exciting things that are happening this year!

Several papers went home Friday from the PTA including Officer and Open Chair Positions, joining the Snow PTA, and a Box Tops Contest.
Please take the time to review the camp packet that went home also on Friday. Please send in the form and money before September 27!!! If you have any question feel free to contact me or the the camp.

Thank you to all of the wonderful families that have sent in suggested supplies and donations for the classroom. It looks like we’re going to have a fantastic year!!!

Message from Dr. Groover

Good morning,
It seems that there are many complaints and some confusions about our new arrival and dismissal procedures. We absolutely don’t want students walking through the parking lot at arrival or dismissal for obvious safety reasons. I encourage parents who have concerns to discuss them with me as I believe that everyone who has approached me with an issue we have been able to accommodate with a solution.
Just for the record, this is not something that is being mandated by the Superintendent or the Board. It came about as a result of parent and teacher complaints about the lack of orderly arrival and dismissal procedures, particularly last year. After reaching out to other principals, including observing their arrivals and dismissals, and talking to our staff, I decided to try this approach. As some have noted, many of the other Dearborn schools, particularly on the west side, do it this way. We also experimented with it at summer school.

It has only been 4 days and this is a pretty big change. We announced some tweaks to the procedures on Friday in order to address a couple of problems. I anticipate that we will make more as we all settle in to the routines.

I would like to convene a Task Force of interested parents and staff to work with me to develop solutions that will work for everyone. Once I get some volunteers, we can find a meeting time that would work one evening this week or early next week. Please email me at groover@dearbornschools.org if you’d like to participate in the Task Force.

Enjoy the beautiful weather and we’ll see you tomorrow.

Thanks,
Ross
