COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This is a history course; therefore we will be discussing events and people that have already happened, dating back thousands of years. There will be an extensive study of different civilizations that existed and their impact on the environment, their neighbors, and on the course of mankind. Certain people will be studied including the Chinese, Japanese, Muslims, Mongols, Mughals, and Ottomans. We will also cover certain time periods such as the renaissance, emergence of religions, explorations, slave trade, and rise of monarchies.

MATERIALS: You will need EVERY DAY:

* 1 subject notebook [9 x 11] with a pocket folder

*Paper folder with pockets and three rings in the middle [1st hr: green, 2nd hr: blue, 4th hr: red, 5th hr: yellow, 6th hr: orange]

*Mini stapler

*Glue sticks

* Highlighters (each day): pink, yellow, and green

* Colored pens or fine line-markers (no sharpies)

* Post-its

* Loose-leaf paper and lots of it!

* Pen/Pencil

WHAT IS REQUIRED OF YOU:

rig·or2 ˈrigər/

o   the quality of being extremely thorough, exhaustive, or accurate.

o   demanding, difficult, or extreme conditions.

You are here to learn history and you will be required to work your tail off like you’ve never worked before. I am rigorous. I demand rigor. If you do not plan on doing the work I assign at the expectations that I set, day in and day out, then you are in for a surprise. I am here to teach you to become a lifelong learner- someone who has the tools to master the art of learning, manage their time well, and believe in themselves. We are partners: and if either one of us fails to do their part, then our partnership has failed. And I refuse for anyone of us to fail. I promise to never let you down, and in time you will appreciate how hard I push you because you will learn to truly believe in yourself. So please, don’t let me down. I truly believe that if I set high expectations, student can and will follow.

A wise teacher once said: “Have you heard the saying ‘No pain, no gain?’ When you work out, pain is weakness leaving your body. Well, in this class, doing homework and studying is ignorance leaving your brain.’

CLASSROOM RULES:

Be respectful: Anything that may distract another student’s ability to learn in our classroom will not be tolerated

NO electronic devices at any time: using it will cause you to lose participation points or referrals

Be honest: The purpose of anything we do in class is to measure how well YOU have understood the material. To use someone else’s answers is unfair to you and the other person. You are putting the other person in a difficult position because both of you will receive a zero.

o   ANY FORM OF CHEATING on any test, assignment, or homework earns the student a zero with NO chances of retakes/make-ups

o   What constitutes cheating:

  • Copying homework [even if just a few questions]
  • Whispering during a test
  • Having a cheat sheet when not authorized to do so
  • Erasing someone’s name and turning it in as your own
  • Taking pictures of any test, quiz, or assignment
  • Plagiarizing: copying information without proper citation

Be prepared: come to class with all necessary materials and ready to learn…  Have your homework ready to turn in AT THE DOOR unless specified elsewhere

o   Be on time: I follow the school’s tardy policy and if you get yourself on audit, prepare to face the consequences of earning 78% of higher on the cumulative exam to pass the class with full credits. Failure to do so will result in half credits, repeating the class, and falling behind on graduation.

o   Leave non-classroom materials in your locker

HOMEWORK:

I am that teacher that gives homework, sometimes a lot of it. I give homework because you need to constantly be reviewing the information we cover in class- otherwise you will forget it. None of the homework assignments I give are ridiculous to do, therefore I expect it to be done. You will be given detailed directions in class on how to do it, and then the directions will be posted on the blog.

v  HOMEWORK IS DUE WHEN YOU WALK IN UNLESS I SAY OTHERWISE!!!! NO LATE HOMEWORK WILL BE ACCEPTED

v  If you are unable to do a homework assignment, contact me the night before and tell me…excuses cannot be given after! [i.e. fish ate my homework, my mom thought it was garbage, ran out of toilet paper, ran out of ink]

v  Projects and papers are due on the assigned date regardless of absence- failure to turn them in on time will result in an automatic zero.

If you are absent: Because of the blog, you can know what is going on in the class even on the days you are not present.

  1. On the day you come back from your absence, YOU MUST pick up all the work that you missed. All the work will be placed on the bulletin board- you need only to look in the folder of the day you were absent and pick up a copy of the assignment.
  2. Homework is due the NEXT day after your return.
  3. Failure to do so will result in a zero.

TESTS:

I take it personal when you miss a test, therefore I will reward you with a different test that will not necessarily be harder, but less easy [big difference]. So, my advice: don’t be absent on test days. You really can’t afford to miss days in my class- I cannot reteach the lesson and explanations I give but I can offer you the resources I used through the blog. You must get the notes from someone and study the test.

v  If you miss the review day [day before the test], you are still EXPECTED TO TAKE THE TEST! NO EXCUSES!

QUIZZES:

They are sometimes scheduled and sometimes given at random. They will usually be reading quizzes- so if I assign a reading as homework, expect a quiz on what you read the very next day so I know you did the assignment. This requires daily preparation so that you don’t fall behind. Each question on the quiz will be worth one point.

MAKE-UPS:

All quizzes/tests that are missed must be made up in order for you to receive credit for them.  Must be made up on TUESDAYS AFTER SCHOOL.

v  Failure to show up on that make-up day [without notifying me] will result in a zero

RETAKES:

Retakes are only permitted on tests and only one retake allowed per summative assignment. Retakes must be completed within 1.5 weeks of the original summative assessment and are held on make-up days. I reserve the right to make the retake test more challenging than the original tests. I TAKE THE GRADE OF THE RETAKE EVEN IF IT IS LOWER.

COURSE EVALUATION:

BSW: Student’s BELLWORK, SAT, and WRITING portfolio Participation Interactive World History Notebook [IWHN] [all the homework/classwork]

A folder that will always remain in class and it will hold all of the SAT and writing samples you work on. We will do a lot of practice for micro-arguments.

Each card marking you are expected to complete a participation sheet I pass out. It is due the last day of the card marking.

All of the work we do will be in it and by the end of the year, it will showcase all of you work and understanding of the class. All of our notebooks will be identical and you will notice it helps to keep us all organized. Each card marking, the notebooks will be collected and graded during the last week of the card marking.

o    Grading: As established by Dearborn Public Schools Grading Guidelines, your grade will be based on:

  1. 80% summative measurements [tests, essays, quizzes, projects, IWHN, classroom participation]

a      Participation is an essential part of learning- engaging in discussions and sharing your opinions adds a wealth of information to our class.

i       Each card marking, you are to get 5 participation stamps for a 50 summative grade assignment

ii      You can get three additional stamps on the back. For each stamp after 5, you earn 5 summative points extra credit per

  1. 20% formative measurements [activities, binder, homework]

Your grade on Parent Connect/Student Connect is always updated- there should never be any question about what your grade is. If your login doesn’t work, go to the office and fix it. If there is a mistake in your grade, fill out a GRADE CORRECTION SLIP [found on the board] and turn it in to me, and I will fix it.

Your grade is based on the following scale:

93-100 A 80-82 B-                                67-69 D+
90-92 A- 77-79 C+                              63-66 D
87-89 B+ 73-76 C                             60-62 D-
83-86 B 70-72 C-                           ≤ 59   E

WE ARE FORDSON SPIRIT POINTS: BATTLE OF THE HOURS:

As a class, you guys will be competing against the other classes for title of “Best FHS Class”. At the end of each week, I will count the number of points that you earned. You can earn points the following ways:

**Every Friday, you should wear Fordson t-shirts or colors. For every student showing their school spirit, 5 points.

**On test days: Class with highest test average: 100pts, 2nd highest: 80 points, 3rd highest: 60 points, 4thhighest: 40 points, Lowest average: 20 points

**For every time I ask a student to put their phone away, the class loses 5 points.
