We are doing great within our Read to self time! We are building stamina. Here are some pictures.
Week of September 15th
Literacy unit: Start Smart-You are special
Reading: We are reading these 3 stories: Hands Can, I measure myself, and The Gingerbread Boy
Strategy: Comprehension- Understanding what was read
Sight words: I, can
We have introduced Read to Self- a component of Daily 5. We created a chart of the expectation for their behavior. We have started at 3 minutes. You may also send in your child’s favorite book, so they can add to their book box. This is an opportunity to enjoy reading independently.
Writing: We will start writing sentences starting with I can. We will talk about what a good sentence looks like. We will also be creating an All About Me Book.
Math: We are counting, counting and more counting!! We will explore how to sort, count and order numbers. We will hear and count. We will even create a birthday graph and count how many birthdays in each month. We will also be creating a number book.
Social Studies: We will discuss constitution day and why it is important to follow rules.
Science: we will do an investigation about germs. We will discuss how to stay clean and how to prevent from getting sick.

September 12th
The children are following routine wonderfully. You should all be proud!
A couple of reminders:
- Fall weather has approached us sooner than expected. Please make sure your child is coming to school dressed appropriately for the weather. We can always take off a sweater if we are warm. We go outside every day.
- Please practice putting jackets on and zipping up. Independence is important!
- Picture day is Monday, September 14th. Stickers and bracelets were sent home as reminders. If your ordering pictures, place exact amount of money in the order forms sent- seal and label your child’s name on it.
- Open house is scheduled for Thursday, September 18th at 6:00-7:00. Hope to see everyone.

Week of September 8, 2014
Literacy Theme: Smart Start
Reading: Animals at the Park-An ABC book,
Strategy: listening to the story and responding
Sight word recognition: I
Writing: we have begun with writing the word “I” and drawing pictures to associate with what we can do. Remind your child to start on the left side of the paper. We are also practicing writing our names. Please remind your children to start their name with a capital letter and the rest are expected to be lower case letters.
Math: we are practicing number counting 1-10. We are counting backwards as well. We are associating number 1-5 with matching objects. We are also comparing lengths using terms: longer, shorter
Social Studies and Science: we are observing what is going on around us. We will discuss a scientific way of learning through observing. We will also discuss rules, routines and expectations. Please review the PBIS system at home with your child.
We are doing lots of different centers this week to reinforce counting, letter identification and working with others!
Reminders:
- Please return completed emergency cards A.S.A.P.
- We do go outside everyday. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather.
- Wednesday, September 10th will be a late start. Please report with your child to school at 9:30.

Wow! What a great first week!
The children did a great job their first week of school. Your child brought some items we worked on like their names and numbers. We worked on lots of expected routines. Please review simple rules such as when the teacher is talking they should be listening, to raise their hand and wait to be called on and keeping their hands to themselves. I have introduced our schoolwide PBIS system. We have a color chart in our room with four colors green, yellow, blue and red.
- Green- represents following directions and doing a great job
- Yellow- represents verbal warnings
- Blue- represents missing a part of recess
- Red- represents missing all of recess and parent will be receiving a call/note home
If your child remains on green all week, then they receive a pouch card to purchase in the school store.
There will be opportunities to earn dragon dollars for positive behavior, and entered in the weekly drawing.
Please review this system with your child.
