We used magazine and newspaper clippings to find shapes. We were looking for circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles.  Below are some pictures:

Literacy unit: Families Change

This a Review Week!

Reading: We are reading these stories: Peters Chair, We munch on Lunch, Jennifer Bing why don’t you sing?, Rooster goes to Tio’s wedding.

Strategies from our CAFE menu

  • Expanding vocabulary-Reading from left to right, Reading from top to bottom, Read from the left page and move to the right page
  • Comprehension- identifying characters, setting (goal)
  • Fluency: Recognize sight words: I we, the, can, recognize letters Aa-Zz

Review Letters of the week: Aa/Mm – children will be coming home with an Aa/Mm Book they created.

Sight words Review: I, can, we, can

Writing: We will be practicing writing all the letters correctly. We will also practice writing sentences using our sight words: I, can, we, the. We will tie in reflecting about what we used to do when we are little and what we can do now  in our journals. Encourage your child to share. We will also be making lists.

Math:  We will continue to count everything. we are now writing number 0-10. Your child should be writing numbers correctly and able to give you the next number. We are now working on number 0-15 orally. We will also play games like spin a number. We will also be reviewing basic patterns and be looking for them all around.

Science:  We will review the 5 senses. (sight, touch, hearing, taste, smell). We will explore the fall seasons. We will look at leaves and discuss why they are changing. We will do leaf rubbings. We will focus on the fall colors which are: red, yellow, orange and red.

Social Studies: we are discussing how people change over time. Please send in a picture of your child as a baby. We will discuss what they used to do as a baby and what they could do now.  We will create a list of things, the picture will be a good concrete thing to refer to.

Week of October 7th

Literacy unit: Families get together

Letter of the week: Aa- children will be coming home with an Aa Book they created. We will also review Letter Mm

New Sight word: The, the  (we are identifying the sight word in the beginning of a sentence as well as in the middle of a sentence). Whenever you read a book and come across the word with your child, allow them to read the word we are learning about.

Science:  We will review the 5 senses. (sight, touch, hearing, taste, smell). We will  explore the sense of smell this week and review the sense of touch We will learn to describe how things smell ie. bad, good, sweet, smelly etc.   We will do an investigation on guess what this is by smell.

Shape bags, homework

You may have noticed your child came home from school with a bag filled with shapes. Practice naming the shapes with your child. We will continue to do more activities with shapes next week. Below are pictures of your child cutting out the shapes to take home:

Also, I sent home a October reading log Wednesday. It is due on October 31st. Please read with your child daily for 20 minutes and record it on the reading log.

 

Please donate… if you can

We will need magazines to cut out items. If you can donate magazines for our class that would be great.

Also, we will really dive into being scientist and investigators, so if you can send in a white t-shirt and a pair of sunglasses (from the dollar store) that would be great. We will pop out the lenses for the sunglasses. If you have a pair laying around with out a lens that would work too.  We will  role play being scientist  and be more engaged in our science time through different types of experiments.

Reading: We are reading these stories:  Whose Baby am I?, Bundle of Sticks, The Lioness and the Ostrich Chicks. We will also read 2 poems called Andre, and Everybody Says

Social Studies: We will continue to discuss the importance of rules. We will revisit constitution day. We will also look at our surroundings and discuss what makes each place in our school unique.

Science:  We will discuss the 5 senses. (sight, touch, hearing, taste, smell). We will continue to explore the sense of touch this week. We will learn to describe how things feel ie. soft, rough, bumpy, smooth etc. We will do an investigation entailing guessing what items are in the rubber glove using the sense of touch.

NOTES:

  • You may have noticed your child came home with a zip loc bag with their name labeled on it. This is a book bag. Please leave this book bag in their back pack every night. Each week I will be providing 1-2 take home books that will reinforce the letter or words learned throughout the week. The children have read these books in class, highlighted either the letter of the week or sight words we have learned and will need to practice at home.
  • Homework: I will be sending home a reading log that will be for the month of October. It will be turned in at the end of the month. Please read with your child for 20 minutes a night and record the book read.  
  • Wednesday is late start. Students will report at 9:30
  • Wednesday is Library check out day. Please make sure your child puts their book in their backpacks, so they remember they have a library book to return and check out a new one!
  • There will be no school on Friday, October 3 and Monday, October 6. See you on Tuesday, October 7th!

Literacy unit: Start Smart-You are special

Sight words Review: I, can

We have discussed 3 ways to read a book. Please review the ways with your child:

  1. Read the pictures- We are working on this!
  2. Read the words- They do not need to know how to do this yet, and that is o.k.-we are learning!
  3. Retell the story-We are working on this!

We have been working on Read to Self- a component of Daily 5. We created a chart of the expectation for their behavior. We are building a stamina chart.We have reached to 7 minutes. You may also send in your child’s favorite book, so they can add to their book box. This is an opportunity to enjoy reading independently.

Writing: We will start writing sentences starting with I can. We will talk about what a good sentence looks like. We will also be creating an All About Me Book.

Math:  We will continue to explore how to sort, count and order numbers. We are building patterns with colors, exploring coins, and exploring different ways to measure.

Social Studies: We will continue to discuss the importance of rules. We will also look at our surroundings and discuss what makes each place in our school unique.

Science:  We will discuss the 5 senses. (sight, touch, hearing, taste, smell). We will explore the sense of touch this week. We will learn to describe how things feel ie. soft, rough, bumpy, smooth etc.

NOTES:

There will be a few notes coming home from the office. Please complete and return as soon as possible. 

Wednesday is Library check out day. Please make sure your child puts their book in their backpacks, so they remember they have a library book to return and check out a new one!
