Unit 6: Neighborhoods

Reading: This week we will be learning all about a neighborhood and communities. We will read Russ and the Firehouse; Neighborhood Maps; In our Neighborhood; The Black Cat

Writing: We will be writing a fun narrative that kind of looks like a comic strip. We will be working on creating a character and giving them speech balloons/bubbles. We will practice in the text Russ and the fire house. Then, we will continue to practice by creating an animal character in the neighborhood as a whole group. Next, the children will have a chance to create themselves as a character in a neighborhood and give them speech balloon.

Math: We will explore solid shapes. We will discuss faces, corners, sides and vertices. We will revisit the nickel. We will explore 2-d and 3-d shapes.

Social Studies: We will explore types of maps. We will explore parts of our neighborhood and create group neighborhood maps. We will explore a compose rose. We will learn that we are tiny things in this giant world. Specifically, we will be working on a project flip book that will state:

My Neighborhood-

  • I live in Dearborn.
  • I live on Michigan.
  • I live in the United States of America.
  • I live in North America.
  • I live on Earth.

Happy Monday!

Review Week: Reading: We will be Reading into Animal Habitats: Mole and Baby Bird; Animal Homes; Poem: Growing and Changing; Animal Habitats; Coyote and the Turtle

Writing: We will be reviewing the endangered animals. We will identify how to help each of these animals and create a book about it. The sentence stem will be: I can help ___ by __.

Math: We will be working on money this week. Our focus will be on the penny and the nickel and its value. We will add pennies and nickels.

Science: We will be learning about magnets and what sticks to it. We will classify items that are magnetic and items that are not.

Week of January 17th

Happy Tuesday!

Reading: We started working intensely on our recent research endangered project. We will investigate the koala, black rhino, sea turtles and the Siberian Tiger. We will read multiple articles from Readworks.org on each animal and will create a comprehensive collection of information.

It will consist of:

  • Appearance: What do they look like?
  • Food: What do they eat? Carnivore, Herbivore, Omnivore
  • Habitat: In what do they live in?
  • Continent: Location on a map
  • How can we help?

Strategy:

  • Collecting information and applying in our writing
  • Transferring information from a table into structured writing
  • Responding to questions
  • Thinking outside the box: what would or can they do?

Writing: We will continue to learn about informational writing. We will write to describe the endangered animal. We will write about a different animal each day of the week. The sentence stem will be:

A __(endangered animal)__ is ___.

A __(endangered animal)__ lives in ___.

It is in __(continent).

***Today your child came home with an extensive writing piece about koalas. Please read and review with your child. Tomorrow we will focus on the black rhino.

Math: We will practice 0-70. We will practice using a ruler. We will discuss that there is 12 inches in a foot. A ruler is also known as a foot. We practice measuring a few things using a ruler. All items measured were less than a foot size. The idea was to make sure we are able to measure correctly, starting at zero. More sample practice will be coming home this week. Please review how to measure with your child.

Science: We will continue to discuss motion and how shapes moves. We will discuss what gravity is and which way items are pulled due to gravity (down). We will also practice naming 3-d shapes and how it connects to real life objects and how they move. Some examples include:

  • cube: tissue box-slides
  • pyramid: pyramids of Egypt-slides
  • cone: ice cream cone- slides, rolls in a circle
  • cylinder: cup- slides, rolls in a straight line
  • identify: hexagonal prism, triangular prism, rectangular prism, sphere

Social Studies: We will review timelines of your lives and daily events. I will be giving a social studies test this week and next week. It is an individualized test. It will contain:

  • Identify the beginning, middle and end of the story
  • What items can help us learn about the past
  • Parts/places of the classroom or the school
  • Identify what you did or will do: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow in school
  • Name a responsibility you have at a school
  • Name a rule in school and why

REMINDERS:

  • Late Start: Wednesday, January 18th
  • Make sure book bags are in your child’s backpack daily

Happy New Year!

Welcome back! I hope everyone enjoyed their restful break with family and friends! We are definitely all charged up and ready to learn ๐Ÿ™‚

New Unit: Animals: how they grow and change

Reading: We will read a couple of books of common animals: Mama Cat and her three kittens; Lets go to the vet; 3 Little Kittens; Mama mouse and El Gato

Strategy:

  • Sequence a story
  • Respond to questions asked (comprehension)
  • Retell a story
  • How to ask questions about a story?
  • How to answer your own question?
  • How to relocate information from text?

Letters of the week: Ll, Oo

Writing: We will be writing an opinion. Students will be expected to write what animal they like and why. The sentence stem to guide your child in writing is: I like ___. It has___.

We will discuss:

  • what type of skin they have
  • how many legs
  • where do they live
  • what do they eat (carnivore:meat eater, herbivore:plant eater, omnivore: plant and meat eater)

An example includes: I like cats. It has soft fur. It has 4 legs. etc.

Math: We will be learning about the order of events in our day and week. Its all about learning time but in a general sense. ย Below are examples of what we are looking for in the speech and writing.

  • A day would sound like: In the morning, we ____. In the afternoon, we___. In the evening, ____.
  • A week would sound like: Yesterday, we___. Today, we ___. Tomorrow, we___.

We will also be practicing to write 1-60 for those who are struggling. We will also review counting by 10’s to 100. We will practice counting by 5’s to 100.

Science: We will review motion and how objects move based on their shapes. We will review 3d shapes and discuss their movement. Examples include:

  • cones roll in a circle
  • cylinder roll straight on their side, but slide on the flat top/bottom side
  • pyramids, rectangular prisms, cubes slide on their flat sides.
  • spheres roll

Social Studies: We will present our timelines. We will briefly discuss Martin Luther King Jr. and his importance.
