Week 3: Flowers

Reading: We will read Sunflower House; Flowers; How the garden grows; The elephant and the rabbit. Each story focuses on how plants and flowers grow and what they look like.

Grammar: Adjectives: to describe something

Writing: We will be using adjectives to describe a specific flower. We will work on one flower on Tuesday and the writing sample should come home as usual. On Wednesday, your child is expected to choose a different flower and write a description in the same format of the writing on Tuesday. The sentence stem are:  ___ have___. ___are ___. ___has____.

Math: We ware learning about clocks and telling time to the nearest hour. We are also learning about a function machine. What is the rule is I put a number in the machine and a different number comes out. I have games to practice for both skills:

Science: We are learning about plant parts. We will be creating a project, a flip book and watch a movie to help with remembering the parts: roots, stem, leaf, petals and seeds.

Batman came to visit us because our school reached it’s Reading goal of reading over 200,000 minutes!!

Week of March 27th

Unit: Plant and Seeds

Reading: How seeds travel and get planted. We will read Seed Secrets; Poems: In my garden, Mary Mary Quite Contrary; The Talking Vegetable; Lets go to the National Park

Strategy: Sequence using transitional words: First, Next, Then, Last

Phonics: short e in CVC words

Spelling: (-en family) pen, den, hen, men, ten, here, was

Writing: We will continue informational writing. We will write about plants that grow on a vine using the transitional words first, next, then, and last. We are writing in sequential order. Practice talking out loud about things you do using the transition words. The more you say it, the easier it will come in writing.

Math: We will revisit coins, and focus on the quarter. We will also make different types of patterns and identify the rule of that pattern. We will also learn about place value and how it connects with the ten base blocks. We will review tens and ones and learn about hundreds.

Science: We will learn about what a plant needs to live (air, soil, water and sun). We will create thinking maps, flip books, watch videos and complete a mini-book.

Week of March 20th

New Unit: Plants

Reading: We will be reading Oak Trees; Poem: Acorn; The Sticky Sticky Pine cone; The conceited apple tree.  These stories will guide us to through how plants grow and what they need to survive.

Strategy focus: We will be sequencing and retelling using First, Next and Last.

Spelling: down, little, we, cap, gap, nap, lap, tap, *flap

Writing: We are continuing to write informational pieces this week. Our focus will be sequential writing. Last week we wrote an informational piece with the focus on description. This week we will focus on the transition words: first, next, then and last. We will start our writing just focusing on trees and then individually write about a plant choice. Be on the look out how trees will be written and talk about a plant (vegetable, fruit or flower) that your child would like to write about.

Math: We will revisit geometry this week. We will discuss all things regarding geometric shapes. This includes:

  • 2-d, 3-d shapes naming them (square, cube etc.)
  • count how many: faces, vertices, corners, sides, edges
  • building bigger shapes using shapes you have (ie. 2 triangles can make a square)
  • building shapes using play dough and toothpicks

Math TEST THIS WEEK!!!!!!

Science: We will be discussing what living and non-living means. Living things: breathe, sleep, eat, grow etc. Non-living things do not. The students will watch a movie, sort and listen to many stories that will aide them through this process. The students will also plant their very own seed and document its growth!!!!
