Week of September 11
HAPPY MONDAY!!!! This week we will be going for a full day. Your child will be tired but they will be having fun!!
Reading: We will read multiple stories and make self to text connections. The stories we will read are called: Animals at the ABC park; Rules are Important; You are beautiful as you are; Don’t let the pigeon drive the bus; Kindergarten Rules.
Strategies for the week:
- Identify the front and back cover
- Recall one part in the story
- Text to self connection: Draw something beautiful
- What is a word wall?
Letters of the Week: Aa, Mm (we will blend these letters together)
Sight word of the Week: I, am
Writing: We will practice using the letters and words we learn this week in put them in sentences. We will also practice correct letter formation. When we write, please keep in mind, we write starting from the top of the line and going down. When we write we will be going right to left (directionality).
DAILY 5 STARTS THIS WEEK!!!
We will discuss three ways to read a book:
- Read the pictures
- Read the words
- Retell the story
We will also start the first component/structure to daily 5 which is Read to Self. We will create an I-chart to establish expectations. I will discuss what their job is and what my job is. Your child will be getting an assigned spot in the classroom and your child will be reading in the spot silently. We will start for 3 minutes and build time on a stamina chart. I will post how we are doing!!
Math: We will explore pattern blocks and build patterns. We will practice writing numbers 1-5 and counting objects in groups. I am aware that many of the children know their numbers but routine and structure is important at this point to establish strategy groups within math time.
Science: We will discuss what it means to be a scientist. We will discuss germs and ways to keep them away. We will practice bathroom procedures including hand washing, flushing etc.
Social Studies: We have created a set of “I can do it” rules to establish expectations in the classroom. We will review these rules to continue the structure.
A couple of reminders:
- School begins at 8:35. Please arrive on time.
- This week only the children will be dismissed at 12:15. There will be no buses.
- Starting Monday, dismissal will be at 3:35. Mrs. Smith class will be dismissed first with my class to follow and finally Mrs. Polgar’s class. So please be patient with us. We would like to ensure all students safety.
- Your child will have lunch everyday. Once we start afternoons on Monday, your child will have snack as well.
- Please dress your child appropriately for the weather. We will be going outside. It is easier to remove layers of clothing if it is hot outside.
- Open House is scheduled for September 14 from 6:00-7:30.
- There will be no school for kindergarten students only on Friday, September 22.
- If your child has any allergies, please notify me immediately.
Yours Truly,
Ms. Mohamed
What an amazing first week!
What a busy week! Here is a recap on what we did:
We read multiple stories such as David goes to school, Birdie goes to school, Curious George first day at school and Pigeon needs a bath.
We discussed what a character is.
We discussed behavior in school.
We also practiced calendar procedure and practiced some counting games.
We explored our book boxes – one essential component in our Daily 5 structure and we will further discuss when and how to use them next week.
We practiced routine and structure in the classroom, at our school and on the playground. We will continue to practice the procedures expected in school next week as well. Please review with your child that when the teacher is talking they should always be listening to know what to do.
Have a fabulous weekend! More information coming next week!
