Investigating using our senses

This week we talked about our five senses. We used pumpkins and goards to help us with senses of sight and touch. We also were introduced to science tools like the magnifying glass and science journals to record findings. Next week, we will talk about push and pull. We will also do a sink and float investigation using our pumpkins and goards. Below are pics:

Reading Buddies

We started reading buddies with the third grade class Ms. Martin last week. Below are some pics:

Week of October 9th

Michigan weather is unpredictable. Please check the weather and dress your child appropriately.

Reading: We will be listening to stories called: The Picnic at the Apple Park; Animal Nights; Squeaky Old Bed; Revisit The Lioness and The Ostrich.

Strategies:

  • Identify the beginning and end of a story (retell)
  • Point under each word as it is being read
  • The difference between a letter and a word
  • Review: characters, setting, title, front/back cover of a book, return sweep; reading left to right, reading top to bottom, reading left page to right page

Letters of the week: Pp, Ll (review: Aa, Mm, Ss, Tt, Dd)

Sight word of the week: like (review: I, am, can, the, we)

Writing: We will be discussing what opinion writing looks like. We will discuss and write our own opinion using the word of the week “like”. We will discuss that opinion writing is what someone thinks and that everyone can have their own idea. I will introduce the writing process. This will be an expected and predictable routine every week. It will proceed as follows: On Monday, we will create a chart and I will show them what an opinion piece looks like. On Tuesday, we will write a practice one together and it will come home. On Wednesday the students will write one by them selves. On Thursday, I will revise and edit with your child. On Friday, your child will publish their piece and it will be posted on SeeSaw.

Math: We will learn about ten frames. Just like five frames we will learn to count in different ways to make ten. Homework coming home Wednesday.

Science: We will explore pumpkins and gourds. We will continue using the 5 senses this week through our investigations.

REMINDERS:

  • Friday, October 13 is a half day. Dismissal is at 11:45
  • Library is on Wednesdays.
  • Practice reading every night for 20 minutes.

Thank you for your support!

Week of October 2nd

Check out what we are learning this week:

Reading: Animal Babies; Lioness and the Ostrich, Bundle of sticks; Rooster’s off to see the world; Five little ducks; A frog in the bog

STRATEGIES:

Review all of these concepts as you read any book with your child: author’s role,

  • illustrator’s role,
  • front cover,
  • back cover,
  • spine of book or binding,
  • character,
  • setting,
  • left to right,
  • top to bottom.

New reading strategies for this week:

  • Retell: whenever we read or listen to a story we will practice retelling what happened. You can do this by reading a few pages and stopping to discuss what happened so far with your child.

Letter of the week: Ss (review: Aa, Mm, Tt, Dd, Cc)

Sight word of the week: the (review: I can we am)

Writing: We will be narrative writing. This is writing about a real story or event that happened. We will start off with one simple sentence and practice the mechanics of writing. We will be doing this for a while until your child id comfortable to do it on their own. For now, I will be writing sentences with them.  The ideas we will be focusing on will be:

  • Capital letter in the beginning of any sentence.
  • Spacing between words
  • Punctuation at the end of a sentence.
  • Return sweep at the end of a line to continue a sentence.

Math: We will be learning about Five Frames. This strategy is to build numeracy with numbers within 5. There will be games in place to help your child practice. I will be sending homework on Tuesday. It will be due the next day. The homework is not about how hard or easy it is. Its about responsibility to be returned the next day.

Science: We will be investigating the five senses to being a scientist. We will have 3 investigations on hearing, sight and sound. We will record our information in our science journals.

We will really dive into being scientist and investigators, so if you can send in a white t-shirt or lab coat and a pair of sunglasses with lens popped out(from the dollar store) or safety goggles that would be great. If you have a pair of glasses laying around with out lens that would work too.  We will  role play being scientist and be more engaged in our science time through different types of experiments and investigations.

REMINDERS:

  • No school for kindergarten students only on Friday, October 6th
  • We are short on snacks, please donate if you can. Non-perishable items are suggested. Examples include: graham crackers, gold fish, etc.
  • Math Homework coming home Tuesday.
  • Everyday your child should read for 20 minutes
  • Everyday your child should bring his/her reading bag and folder to school. Remember to empty our folder or backpack of old items.

Thank you for your support!

Week of September 25

Can you believe it? It’s the end of the September. Wow!

Check out what we are learning about!

READING: We will be listening to a story called Jazz Baby; Things made from Clay; Bundle of Sticks;

STRATEGIES: role of an author; role of an illustrator, characters, setting, left to right, top to bottom, period at the end of a sentence,

LETTERS: Cc (review Aa, Mm, Dd, Tt)

SIGHT WORD: we (review can, I, am)

WRITING: I will be showing the children how to write the structure and expectation. There will be minilessons that will coordinate the ideas expected which include:

  • Drawing a picture above and writing words to match
  • How to draw lines to control writing.
  • Labeling
  • Capitalize the first Letter in the sentence
  • Spacing between words
  • Punctuation

We have a Writer’s Workshop time daily, where we write together using the sight words we learned as well as sounding out new words together.

Keep in mind this is a gradual process. There are students who know how to write and will be pushed to do more and students who know less and will be encouraged to try their best. This is a learning process for all. Please encourage and practice with your child the correct forming of letters so writing can be easier for your child. For those who practice handwriting, I will be recognizing. I have talked about this multiple times. Use the guide in the reading bags to form letters correctly. Thank you for those who have been practicing. Consider it writing homework.

MATH: We will explore numbers 0-4 and create number bonds for each number. We will discuss way to make those numbers in groups and create number sentences. We will learn how to count objects and count on from number 0-10 without having to count from the beginning. We will learn and practice how we described our counting tricks to encourage others to look at numbers differently.

SCIENCE: We will revisit what it means to be a scientist. What senses to use to be a scientist. What tools a scientist may need during experiments. We will also review the seasons and focus on the fall season.

REMINDERS:

  • We will have our national walk to school day on Wednesday, October 4th. Parents are encouraged to walk to school that day or park further and walk to school.
  • Reading groups began this week. I met with half the class today and will meet with the rest tomorrow. Please make sure reading bags are in their backpacks. We will be using them everyday.
  • Library check out is Wednesday. Please make sure your child has their book with them on this day or they will not be able to check out a library book.
  • We are running low on snacks. If you can donate some that would be great! Thanks!

Thank you!

Ms. Mohamed
