We’re excited about this year’s Field Day event! It is going to a fun-filled day for all of our students. The big day is scheduled for Friday, May 11, 2018. This event will include a variety of fun and team-building games and activities. All parents are welcome to attend. As you know, in order for Field Day to be successful, we need the help of many parent volunteers. Below you will find the schedule for the day. We will need volunteers for both the morning and afternoon. Please return the bottom portion of this form by Friday, May 4, 2018. Week of April 23rd
Reading: Beetles; The ant and the grasshopper; The elephant and the bees; Insect Hide and Seek
Phonemic awareness:
- Long vowels and short vowels review
- CVCE: hope, cape, cute, ripe etc

Spelling: what, bug, hug, tug, slug, rug, mug, jug, plug
Writing: we will be writing a riddle about an insect or any other object of interest. It will state as follows:
I am an insect. I am ___. I can __. What am I? Hint: I can/have __.
Math: geometry- 2d and 3 d shapes: identify sides, faces, corners/vertices. build a a 3d shape using playdough and toothpicks.
Social Studies: take a stand on the an issue in our world. Students will work in groups to come up with a slogan and create a poster together. examples include:
- Don’t be a litterbug
- Never let the water run
- shut off the lights when you leave the room
Spring Pictures Friday, April 20th
No need to bring in money. A form was sent out for a choice in poses. If you don’t make a choice, the photographer will make a choice for your child. Pictures will come in and you may get to see them in advance. If you like them, then you purchase them online or send in money. You can buy all of them or a few pieces. Any pieces you do not like, please return them. If you do not like them, then you can return them.

Welcome back!!!!
Reading: We will be reading Seeds Secrets; The Conceited Apple Branch, Poem: Acorn, The Talking vegetables.
Comprehension Strategies:
- collecting new information and creating a thinking web
- collect new vocabulary
- practicing rhyme
- creating speech balloons/dialogue between characters
- identify the genre of the text read aloud along with authors purpose.

Writing: We will be writing an informational about flowers. We will learn about writing a topic sentence and expanding on our thought about flowers. Sentence stems: Flowers are plants. It needs__. It has _.
Math:We will learn about forming numbers in different modalities. For example: if your child has the number 12 then your child will need to create a flower with petals attached. On each petal will be a different mode of the specific number your child will get. 12 would have 2 tens and 2 ones, 12 tally marks, 12 on a double ten frame, 12 on a 2 dice, 12 pictures of an object.
Science: We will be planting a flower and document its growth. We will plant the seed and measure its growth. We will record it as data.

Week of March 26th
Reading: We will read The tiny seed; How a seed grows; I’m a seed; From seed to plant (mostly these are informational text so the purpose will be to inform).
Comprehension: Author’s purpose- P.I.E: Persuade, Inform, Entertain
Phonemic Awareness: R-blends (cr-, pr-, fr-, dr-)
Spelling/sight word/word family: when, ten, men, pen, hen, yes, no
Note: Spelling Test will be on Thursday
Writing: Opinion- Which Dr. Seuss was your favorite? Students must state the book they like the most and reasons why. Sentence stems:
My favorite book was___. I like the part when ___.
Math: More number bonds/part-part-whole. Students will continue to build and create number bonds in many ways and use multiple manipulatives such as unifix/linking cubes, objects, pictures, fingers, numbers and base ten blocks to complete number sentences. We are reviewing composing and decomposing within 6, 7, 8, 9. This will help with completing missing addends coming soon.
Science: Students will learn about-Living and non-living things, Plant needs to survive (soil, air, water, space, sun) and plant parts (roots, stem, leaf, petals, seeds).
