Week of June 4th

Reading and writing: We will be reading fiction and non-fiction texts about butterflies. We will learn about their body parts and the different colors they come in. We will also discuss their lifecycle.

Phonemeic awareness: reviewing all blends and diagraphs

Spelling practice:-am ( Sam, Pam, ram, ham, jam slam, cram, clam, spam etc)

Math: more learning about money. This week we will focus dime, quarter and the dollar

Science: We will continue to investigate life cycles- this week its all about the butterfly life cycle and other insects.

 

Week of May 29th

Reading and Writing: We will be reading and investigating all about frogs and their life cycle. We will read fiction (not real/fake) and non-fiction (real) stories. We will write all we learned about frogs. Sentences will look like: Frogs are ___ Frogs can___. Frogs have __.

Spelling practice: -ub family (cub, rub, tub, sub, club, scrub etc)

Phonemic awareness: t-blends (tw-, tr-)

Math: We will learn about money. We will focus on the penny and the nickel. We will learn their value (penny= 1 cent, nickel= 5 cents). We will learn how to count and combine both coins.

Science: We are learning about life cycles of different animals. Last week we discussed the life cycle of a sea turtle. This week it is all about the frog. We will create a simple cycle of 5 steps which include:

  • egg> tadpole> tadpole with legs> froglet> adult frog

Reminders:

  • Kg picnic scheduled for June 12th from 11:15-12:15. Families are invited to join your child.
  • Last day of school is June 14th. It is a half day. No lunch will be served that day.

Week of May 21

This week will be a short fun week!

Reading and Writing: We are reading multiple stories and articles about sea turtles. We will write about where the live, how they look and what they eat.

Spelling: There is no spelling test this week but we will cover these words:  smog, hog, fog, jog, dog, frog, log, blog

Math: Calculators- We will explore and learn to use them in addition and subtraction practice models

Social Studies: We will review maps and globes. We will compare both and discuss how they are alike and how they are different.

School reminders: 

  • No spelling test this week
  • No homework packet but to read 20 minutes nightly
  • There will be no more reading bags so read books you have at home- we will continue doing reading groups but no more books are going home
  • There will be no school on Friday, May 25th and Monday, May 28th for Memorial Day weekend

Field trip reminders:

  • We will be leaving Howard at 9:10
  • We will be leaving the Village at 1:45
  • Children are expected to ride the bus there and and back from the trip.
  • Please pack a lunch for your child in disposable bags
  • Please dress appropriately for the weather and have a good pair of walking shoes because there is a lot of walking.
  • Chaperones check in with me at the gate, so I can give your list of kids and the scavenger hunt as well as my contact information.

Week of May 14th

Happy Michigan Week!!!

Reading-We are learning every fact we can about Michigan. Each day, we will focus on a specific aspect of Michigan.

  • Monday: Michigan is a peninsula. The state flower is the apple blossom
  • Tuesday: The state bird is the American Robin
  • Wednesday: The state stone is the petoskey stone
  • Thursday: The state tree is the Eastern white pine
  • Friday: Write 3 sentences about what you know about Michigan

Phonemic awareness: 3 letter s-blends:  (spr-, spl-) spray, splash

Spelling: dip, tip, rip, sip, nip, whip, be, will

Writing: Creating a Michigan Book

Math: Clocks to the nearest hour and half hour. Counting out area in shapes and irregular shapes.

Social Studies: Historical narrative- Johnny Appleseed.

Important Reminders:

  • Skating at Lincoln Park Skating Tuesday, May 15th from 6:00-8:00. Howard students are free if they bring their yellow pass.
  • Wednesday, May 16th late start. NWEA testing in Math
  • Friday, May 18th NWEA testing in Reading
  • Field trip permission slip and money due Friday, May 18th

Week of May 7th

Reading: The world of dinosaurs; T-rex; what do you want to be when you grow up? How about a paleontologist?;  Foot Prints

Strategies:

  • Identifying a fact and opinion
  • Collecting evidence for making a book

Math: measuring with non-standard items-unifix cubes, popsicle sticks, hand, foot. We are learning how to measure correctly using edge to edge strategy.

Social Studies: Historical narrative- we are learning about the lives of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

Your child received a packet with 5 sheets of photos. There is an order form envelope in the packet along with the set of pictures.

If you are interested in purchasing these pictures, you may send the money to school or order the pictures online. Either way, please send envelope back completed. You may purchase all or some of the photos. Follow the instructions on the order form.

If you are not interested, please send all photos back and they will be shipped back to the company.
