Week of October 8th

Happy Tuesday! Please dress your child appropriately for the weather!! It is easier to take off layers. Michigan weather is unpredictable- one minute it is hot and the next minute it is cold and pouring!

This week in Kindergarten:

Reading: Pumpkin, pumpkin; I like Pumpkins; Pumpkin count down; Pumpkin circle; Strega Nona’s Harvest; From seed to pumpkin; The legend of Spookley

Reading Strategies:

  • Identifying the title, author’s role, illustrator’s role
  • Retell a story in sequence
  • Make a self to text connection (what does the story remind you of?)

Sight word: can (review all we learned so far)

Letters: Pp, Hh (review all we learned so far)

Writing: We will write opinions together and stating a reason why using our special word because. Examples include:  I like __ because __. I do not like __ because___.

Math: We are still composing and decomposing number 0-10. Our focus will be number 9 and 10. We will discuss ways to make those numbers. We have made the numbers using different ways such as:

  • dominoes
  • dice
  • finger and hands
  • scatter mats
  • subitizing cards
  • filling in ten frames
  • number bonds
  • creating number sentences

Social Studies: We have been discussing fair ways to play. We are reviewing rules and expectations in the classroom. PBIS is very important to help with making sure your child remains on task. Any work your child does not finish will have to complete during recess, daily 5 or math workshop. I have also introduced Playworks in recess time to help students learn how to play fairly and be good sports.

DETROIT ZOO INFORMATION

  • Field trip to the Detroit Zoo is on Thursday, October 11th. Chaperones please be available by 9:00 at the school to be ready to follow the bus if you do not know how to get there. The bus will be ready to load the students at 9:15. You may meet us at the zoo by 9:30 if you like to go ahead.
  • We will meet at the gate to walk in as a group.
  • Make sure your child has a packed lunch (no glass bottles, no lunch boxes). Send lunches in a grocery bag (so they can throw their leftovers and not worry about losing a lunch box)
  • We will inform you at the Zoo exactly what time to meet to leave but we need to be back at the the school by 2:00. We will meet at the water fountain to gather and load on the bus.
  • No gift shopping or riding the train please.
  • If you are a chaperone, check in with me at the zoo so I can tell you which children you have. Most chaperones have only one or two kids. I will also give you my contact info in case of emergency.
  • It looks like it is going to be 60 on Thursday and no rain so hopefully we will see some animals moving about and enjoying the nice weather! Please dress your child appropriately with a good pair of walking shoes.

Week of October 1st

Reading: We will be reading Arnold’s Apple Tree; Apples-Apples-Apples; Parts of an apple; life cycle of an apple.

Strategies:

  • Visualizing what was read
  • Identifying character traits
  • Identify main topic and details
  • Sequencing a story through retelling
  • Making self to text connections
  • Labeling

Sight word of the week: like

Letters of the week: Ff, Ss

Writing: We will be learning about Opinion Writing. We will discuss what an opinion is and how to use words we know (ie. sight words) to aide in our writing.  We will create an I like Book expressing items we like. Our goal is to connect pictures with text, to learn the structure of  a sentences and  practice our formation of letters.

Math: we will decompose number 6, 7, 8. we will discuss different ways to make the numbers, put them in order 0-8 and counting backwards. We will also identify numbers before and after

Social Studies: We will discuss fair ways to play. We will revisit why rules can help to establish fair ways to play with each other. We will also discuss what is good listening skills and following directions

Important Information:

  • We are going on field trip on October 11th- permission slips came home today. They are due Friday, October 5th. If you would like to chaperone, please pay $7 as well. If you have a membership, you still need to fill out the permission slip. Please pack a lunch. Students need to ride the bus to and from the field trip.
  • Half day October 12, 2018
  • Our class is need of snacks, any donations are greatly appreciated.
  • Please make sure your child has their reading bags everyday

Week of September 24th

Check out what we learning about this week:

Reading: We will read/listen to Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by  Bill Martin Jr.; Alphabet Mystery by Audrey Wood; Alphabet Tree by Leo Lionni; Shiver Me Letter by June Sobel; and ABC Animal Jamboree by Gail Andrae.

Reading Strategies:   

  • Identify front cover and back cover
  • Identify the title
  • Role of an author, role of an illustrator
  • Where to begin reading
  • Retell: characters, setting
  • Prediction
  • New vocabulary- using context or picture clues to figure out unknown words

Sight Word: see (review: I, am, at, a)

Letter of the week: Oo (review: Aa, Mm, Tt, Dd)

Writing: Labeling- we will label all the pictures with guidance and connects pictures with text.

Math: We are orally practice counting number 0-20. We are focusing on writing number formation correctly for numbers 0-10. We are also making sure amounts match with the correct numbers 0-10. We are checking what numbers come before and after within 10. We are practicing to count backwards and identifying missing numbers going backward as well. Examples include:

0,_,2, 3, 4, 5, _, 6, 7, 8, _, 10

10, _, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, _, 1, _

Science: What can help things move? How does height effect speed and direction in motion? These are driving questions we will investigate with the kinders this week. We will look at things with wheels and things that are flat. We will learn about ramps and how it effects objects in motion. We will also discuss how different types of force can effect things that move.

Reminders:

  • Library check out is every Thursday. Make sure your child has their library book in their backpacks or they will not be able to check out a book.
  • Mondays and Wednesdays are Gym days. Please make sure your child has gym shoes or they will not be able to participate in Gym.
  • Homework and reading bags will start this week. Homework will be due on Monday because there is no school on Friday for KG only. Usually homework will be due on Friday.
  • No school for KG only on Friday, September 28th.

What a wonderful weekend! Hope everyone enjoyed it!

Sight word of the week: at

In Writing: drawing themselves as characters in their own stories and drawing their settings such as: at the park, at school, at home. Practice labeling their picture with beginning sounds.

In Math: We are counting objects in different arrays. Some are linear, some are in circles or scattered. We need to practice counting the objects without counting them twice.

In Science: We are still exploring the way objects move. We are still learning what force is and how does speed and direction effect the way an object moves. we will also learn about objects that stand still is called at rest. Things that move is called  in motion.
