ZEARN cards

I have sent home cards to log in and play on Zearn. It is another tool to use to help practice the math skills we are learning. It is best to do 5-10 minutes a day.  They are basically games practicing the skill we learned. As your child passess each leevl, more advance games will appear! If you lose the card, email me and I could send you the info! Card should stay in your child’s reading bag for safe keeping!

Week of October 29th

Hope everyone enjoyed their 3 day weekend! Here is what we are learning this week:

Reading with strategies: We will be listening to stories and practicing putting the story pictures in order (sequencing). Stories include: The little old lady who was not afraid of anything; Room on the broom; I know an old lady who swallowed some leaves. We will learn about problem and solution to the story Skeleton Meets Mummy. We will discuss main idea and create a thinking map about fall using the story Why do leaves change colors.

Sight words for the week: go, to

Letters of the week: Nn, Ll

Writing: We will be learning what narrative writing is about. It is writing about a real story. This week we will write about places we go to and what we can do there. We learned that a narrative has a beginning, middle and end. The sentence stems we will use are: I can go to the __. I can __.

Math: We will practice one less with numbers 10-1 and describe the pattern. We will be engaging in math workshop this week. Ask your child comes home ask about  what math workshop they worked on each day.

Social Studies: We will discuss responsibility and how it helps others. Examples include: if you leave your chair, push it it so nobody trips over your chair.

Dates to keep in mind this week:

  • Halloween Parade is scheduled for Wednesday, at 1:40. If there is rain, parade will be cancelled. Send costume in a bag, Children will dress after lunch with help from the homeroom mom.
  • Friday, Nov. 2nd is a half day. Dismissal  will be at 11:45.

Fire safety

 

We discussed Fire Safety during Fire Safety week. Please discuss an emergency exit plan and meeting place with your child. Also, check out the fire department pumpkin patch for family and friends to visit:

Pumpkin Raffle Info

Pumpkin Raffle Wednesday and Thursday

Howard teachers and staff will be decorating pumpkins to raffle off for Halloween.  Tickets will be sold on Wednesday and Thursday during lunch. Each ticket is $1.00.  Please send money in an envelope or baggie. Proceeds will be used to purchase fleece to make blankets for the animals at the animal shelter.  If your child wins a decorated pumpkin, it will need to be picked up on Thursday after school or Friday.

 

Week of October 22nd

Reading: We will be reading Diary of a spider; The Very Busy Spider; Spider Facts; and video of Spider facts for kids.

Reading Strategies:

  • Sequencing
  • Listening for understanding (answering comprehension questions)
  • Visualizing a story read aloud
  • Labeling ( spider)
  • Creating a KWL chart about spiders

Writing: We are learning about informational writing. We are going to write about Spiders. We will create a word bank and use it in our sentence stem: Spiders can ___.

Math: We will practice adding adding and subtracting by one  within 10.

Social Studies: We will discuss what an accident is and how to handle it. We will discuss how to distinguish an accident happening verses something happening on purpose or with intention.

REMINDERS:

  • No school for Kindergarten only- on Friday, October 26th
  • Halloween Parade Wednesday, October 31st

Week of October 15th

Check out what we are learning this week:

Reading strategies:

  • Retelling a story in sequence

Letters of the week: Bb, Cc (review: Aa, Dd, Hh, Mm, Oo, Pp, Ss, Tt)

Writing: We will practice writing sentences in the correct structure as a whole group. We will practice stretching out and segmenting word. Many of the words your child will be writing will be phonetically spelled. This is called inventive spelling. We will create writing piece about what we see in October/fall.

Math: We are exploring different ways to make 10. We will also look at composing and decomposing numbers 1-10. We will make sure we can count forward orally  0-30.

Social Studies: We will continue to discuss what it means to be fair. We will discuss what is means to be responsible and doing the right thing. We will also discuss how to ask for things we want or need. We will also practice using a respectful voice.

October 26- afterschool-Trunk or treat

October 26 no school for kindergarten only

October 31 Halloween parade on the track after school at 1:15. Parents and families are welcome to come watch as long as there is no rain that day.
