Week of May 31st

Reading/Writing:

We will be a reading a simple chapter book called Frogs and Toads are Friends. We will read a chapter a day. We will talk about the table of contents and why it is important.

We are exploring Frogs and Toads this week. We will be writing an informational piece describing and analyzing the difference.

Math:

We will practice using the number chart to create a hidden picture. Clues will be used (really math questions) to help build the picture. Examples include: color the number that is ten more than 20 (color 30).

Social Studies: 

We will explore Michigan Symbols and our leaders. We will talk about our Mayor, Governor and our President. We will revisit our United States Flag. We will also explore our Michigan Flag, the Liberty Bell, Statue of Liberty and the Bald Eagle.

We will also briefly discuss Fire Safety.

  • Talk about a meeting place with your child in case of a fire.
  • What to do is they are trapped in a room.
  • How to stop, drop  and roll if they caught on fire.
  • How to drop and crawl out of a room filled with smoke.
  • Not to be afraid of a Firefighter (Firefighters are our friends)

REMINDERS:

  • Donuts for Dad will promptly begin at 8:45 on Friday June 3.

Donuts for Dad-June 3rd @8:45

We are having our special Howard’s Donuts for Dads on Friday, June 3rd at 8:45-9:20 in the classroom. We are celebrating this Father’s Day event early because Ramadan. Dads will be doing a short craft and enjoying some donuts with their kindergartner!

Birthday Bash Info

A letter has been sent home today. Below is the information sent home by the home room parents:

We will have a Birthday Celebration in class on Friday, June 3rd. We are asking for a $5.00 donation for each child. If you would like to contribute more it is greatly appreciated. Please send the cash in an envelope with your child’s name on it to class by Thursday, May 26. Ms. Mohamed will collect it. The party will be during their lunch hour and cheese pizza will be provided. You do not have to pack them a lunch. The money donation will help to pay for the pizza, drinks, cupcakes, a small gift for each and a Birthday Surprise the kids will love!!!!!

MATH- using shapes to make other shapes or real objects. Lots of fine motor development practice. students will need to build and trace.

Field Trip Notes:

  • wear comfortable shoes
  • bring a lunch
  • Even if the weather is threatening, we WILL go.  Bring appropriate weather gear.  Sunscreen too.
  • Students report regular time.  Parents, if you would like to follow the bus, meet at school about 9:10.  You may want to car pool, since car parking cost is $6.00/car.
  • Remember that ALL STUDENTS RIDE BACK ON THE BUS.  No students leave with parents from the zoo.  After we arrive back at school, I will excuse any to go home with parents, if you wish.  Otherwise, regular dismissal time.

 

Week of May 16th

Field Trip Money and permission slips are due on Thursday May 19th. If you have a zoo pass you may make a copy and send it in.

Literacy Unit: I know a lot (continued…)

Reading: We will read Leo the Late Bloomer. We will make a personal connection and discuss how we changed from the beginning of Kindergarten. We will also read Jack and the Bean Stalk and Mouse Deer Crosses the River. We will analyze each story for specific vocabulary and create Frayer Models for each.

Punctuation focus: We will work on mixed up sentences and focus on end marks. An example would be:

Mixed up sentence:

likes     Dad       us.      to      play     with

Correct Sentence:

Dad likes to play with us.

Writing: We will write complete sentences stating our abilities thus far in Kindergarten. The sentence will be: In KG, I can___. We will create a flower that bloomed for the year to connect to our mentor text.

Spelling: come, make, so, hog, log, dog, jog, frog (2 cold words from the -og family)

Math: We will continue to simple addition and subtraction. We will continue to work with missing addend. We will continue to explore 10 more, 10 less, 1 more, and 1 less using a number chart as a tool/resource. We will also review shapes and using them to build other objects/shapes.

Social Studies: We will identify a law and how to be safe. We will also discuss what is a constitution and how it connects to us in the classroom.  We will also discuss what it means to be a good citizen.

Week of May 9th

Reading: We will continue our unit on What we know. We listen to riddles and try to guess what they are based on the clues provided. (A lot of thinking will take place here)

Writing: Students will create their own riddles. We will try to guess what they are by thinking what clues were given. Students will be expected to write a question and students will answer a question in complete sentences.

Spelling: one, two, red, blue, trip, grip, snip, clip (and two cold words from the -ip word family)

Accuracy/Fluency Strategy: Blends and digraphs focus this week. dr-, sn-, tr-, cl-.

Math: We will be working on addends. We will also explore the number chart by practicing add one more (move one to your right on the chart), one less (move one left on your chart), add ten more (move one down on the chart) and ten less (move one up on the chart). We will also explore adding doubles and doubles plus one.

Science: Exploring solid, liquid and gas

Social Studies: Amazing People (Famous historical figures)

  • Field Trip form came home on Friday. Please return on Thursday, May 19th
  • The cost is 5.50 per person.
