PTA Popcorn Sale this Friday. Please bring 50 cents if you would like to purchase popcorn at the door when you exit the school at the dismissal bell. Please have exact change because you will be paying for yourself you will not be paying the teacher. We will have someone selling at each door.

Week of November 28th

Hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving break!!! 4 weeks and we are starting 2017!!! Time is zooming……………… This week:

Review Week: Traveling Near and Far

Reading: We are reading On the Go; Big, Big Trucks; Timimoto; Poems: My Bike; Subway Train

Sight words: we, the, I, can, like, am, a, see, it, is, go

Bonus words: play, went, because

Letters of the Week: Bb, Rr (We are doubling up now. Make sure you child is practicing all the sounds and letters to help with their writing).

Writing: We will continue to work on informational writing. We are creating a traveling poster. Students will identify a place they would like to go and how they will get there. Word banks of places to visit and vehicles for transportation will be provided. We will also discuss what travels on land, water or air to further describe their writing. Sentence stem will look like:

I can go to the ___by ____. or

We can got to the __. We can go by ___.

Math: We will practice writing numbers 1-40. We will practice counting by 10’s to 100. Its all about graphs this week. We will take a survey (ie. what’s your favorite cookie? or what ice cream flavor would you prefer?). Thee idea is to get information and convert it into a graph that is readable and understandable to a kindergartener. What better way than to have the your child create one so he/she can read/interpret it?

Social Studies: We will dive into needs and wants some more this week. We will also explore goods and services if we have time.

Week of November 21st

Unit 3 Week 2: Traveling near and far

Reading: We will be reading fiction story Duck on a Bike. We will discuss beginning, middle and end. We will discuss a bike is another vehicle to travel with. Next week we will further discuss traveling by other means such as ships, boats, airplanes, rockets etc. We will classify whether it is on land, air, or water. so have the discussion of where you want to go. Some great writing is building toward this.

Sight word: Go, go

Letter of the week: Ii

Strategy to focus on:

  • We will use the letters we learned to build words such as:

it  is   tip   pit   sit   tim   pam   sam   map   mitt   pip   sip

  • Also review these words: we, see, the, like, I, am, a, can, go, because, went, play

Writing: We will write sentences about going to places.   We will be writing this as a whole group because of the short week. Sentences are as follows:

  • It is ____.
  • We can go___.
  • We like to go ___.
  • Can we go ___?

Math: We will discuss what probability is. We will use words such as likely, unlikely, possible etc. We will also practice measuring using unifix cubes.

Social Studies: We will discuss needs and wants briefly and review some more next week. We will discuss what is Thanksgiving and how it started.

REMINDERS:

  • No school on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week! Enjoy your Thanksgiving with your family and friends.
  • School will resume on Monday, November 28th.

Week of November 14th

Unit 3: Getting Around Town

Reading: We will be reading A Bus For Us; Ways to Travel; The Turtle and the Rabbit; How Partridges Built their Canoes

Strategies:

  • Sequencing stories: Identifying the beginning, middle & end
  • Identifying beginning and end sounds of a word.
  • Stretching out a word to listen and identify letters within a word
  • Identifying when to use a period. (Not at the end of a line)
  • Spacing between words

Letter of the Week: Tt

Sight word of the Week: See

Writing: We will introduce Informational writing. It is writing that gives us information. The focus this time around will be description. We will name the topic (which is a type of vehicle) and write a description (color and/or size). The sentence stem: I see a ___. It is ___.

Math: We will introduce the pan balance. We will discuss greater or less than. We will be introduced to non-standard measurement using cubes or other manipulatives to practice what measuring looks like. Practice number 1-30 (or higher).

Social Studies: We will discuss what people need to survive: food, water, shelter, clothes etc.

REMINDERS:

  • Picture Retakes are scheduled for Wednesday, November 16th.
  • Late Start is Wednesday, November 16th. School will start one hour later at 9:30.
  • Our school is collecting food for the needy and less fortunate. Last day to collect would be Monday, November 21.
  • There will be no school Wednesday, November 23 to Friday, November 25 due to Holiday. School will resume on Monday, November 28th.

First, we made a hypothesis. We drew whether the pumpkin will sink or float. Then we recorded our result. Our pumpkins floated!

Week of November 7th

Review Week: Unit 2 Getting Along

Reading: We will be reading Simon and Molly plus Hester; Brer Turtle helps out; Little Red Hen; The Turtle and The Sheep.

Strategies:

  • Sequence: beginning, middle, end
  • Beginning and ending sounds
  • Review Sight words and letters learned so far. (am, the, I, can, like, we, Aa, Mm, Pp, Ss)
  • Using a period at the end of a sentence (not a line)

Writing: We will continue to write our opinions and why. We will focus on games we like to play with friends. Last week we created a thinking map of a game and this week we will write using the map we created. Sentence stem: I like ___because___.

Math: We practice writing and identifying numbers 1-25. please make sure your child is  counting slowly and tapping as they count. Make sure your is writing 25 not 52; 15 not 51 etc.. We will also practice rolling and recording numbers on a graph using dice. We will also explore what a number story is.

Science: Will the pumpkin float? Why? What is inside a pumpkin? We will be answering these questions this week!

REMINDERS:

  • Tomorrow, Tuesday November 8th is no school for the election. Go out and vote!!
  • Parent Teacher Conferences have been scheduled and sent out. If you do not know your time please check in with me.
  • 1st round is fully booked on Thursday, November 10. 2nd and 3rd round are scheduled for Wednesday, November 16th and Thursday,  November 17th.
  • Report cards will be distributed then.

Wayne County Regional Enhancement Education Millage Proposal

 

School districts in Wayne County have placed a proposal on the November 8th ballot to provide added funding for our schools. It is the “Regional Enhancement Millage Proposal.”

If approved by the entire county, the 2 mil proposal will generate approximately $6.2 million from Dearborn but the District will receive $7.8 million in additional funding for our schools.  Money would go to local schools starting this year and the millage expires after six years.  Continue reading
