I hope everyone had a safe and eventful Halloween weekend! This is a short week. Here is what we are diving into:

Review week: Unit: Getting along

Reading: We will be reading Simon and Molly Plus Hester, Helping Hands and several short poems.

Strategies:

• Comprehension: Review character and setting. Retelling the story (Beginning, middle, end) and asking questions
• Accuracy: Identify the first sound in a word and the last sound in a word
• Fluency: Recognize upper/lower case letters and sight words
• Expanding Vocabulary: Reading from left to right, Reading from top to bottom, Read from the left page and move to the right page. Know return sweep when reading /writing a sentence, punctuation (period, question, exclamation mark), Author, Illustrator

Letter of the week: Review: Aa, Mm, Pp, Ss

Sight word: Review: I, can, we, the, like, a

Writing: We will focus on space between the words. We will create a Mr. Spaceman or a Ms. Spacewoman. We will continue to practice letter formation.. We will also be able to write sentences independently using the sight words learned thus far.

Math: We will be working on estimation and number stories.  We will continue to practice counting 0-20. We will continue to focus on numbers 11-20.  We will also practice adding one to any given number. We will also review patterns with shapes and other items. We will continue to discuss positional/prepositional words.

Science: We will complete our Fall book- coming home this week! Your child was the author and illustrator

Social Studies: We will practice ways of cooperating. We will discuss ways to work as a team. Students will build multiple puzzles together and play game boards.

REMINDERS

• No school: Tuesday, November 3rd- Voting Day
• Half day: Friday, November 6th
• Parent teacher conference reminders will be coming home later this week. If the time is not suitable, let me know so we can reschedule.
• If you did not turn in your reading log for October, please do so as soon as possible. If you lost the paper, you may list the books read on a separate sheet of paper.
• We are also running low on snacks. If you can donate some that would be great!

This week….

Unit: What is a friend?

Essential questions: Who can be a friend? What can you do with a friend?

Reading: We will be reading Friends All Around, Making Friends (poem), The Fight (poem), The lion and the mouse, Stellaluna

Strategies:

• Comprehension: Identifying character, setting
• Accuracy: Identify the first sound in a word and the last sound in a word
• Fluency: Recognize upper/lower case letters and sight words
• Expanding Vocabulary: Reading from left to right, Reading from top to bottom, Read from the left page and move to the right page. Know return sweep when reading /writing a sentence

Letter of the week: Pp (Review: Aa, Mm- we will continue blending “a-m” to make the word “am”

Grammar: Nouns- (singular and plural) We will also listen for “s” at the end of a word to describe more than one.

Sight word: “a”-pronounced “ahh” (Review: I, can, we, the, like)

Writing: We will continue to practice letter formation. We will create a picture web. This will be a stepping stone to help the brainstorming process. We will also be able to write sentences independently using the sight words learned thus far.

Math: We will continue to practice counting 0-20. We will continue to focus on numbers 11-20. We call these numbers tricky teens. Students will at times write number incorrectly within these numbers. We will also practice adding one to any given number.

We will also review patterns with shapes and other items. We will continue to discuss positional/prepositional words.

Science: Fall investigation continued… We started to create a fall book to wrap our ideas about fall. We will focus on pumpkins. We will make a prediction, conclusion and record our data in our science journals.

Earlier this year, I requested for parents to send in a white t-shirt or lab coat and a pair of safety goggles or old sunglasses. If you have not send in one yet, please do so. Your child will be role playing scientist during our science investigations. 

Reminders:

• Friday will be our Halloween Parade and Party.  Students may bring a costume to school and we will change into the costumes after lunch.  You also may take your child home at lunch (11:15) to eat and dress.  Please have your child back at school by 12:00 noon. We have music at 12:00.
• The parade will be held at 1:30 at our school track- weather permitting, of course.
• The homeroom parent has requested for $2 for organizing the Halloween party on Friday. If you did not send the money in yet, please do so.

We cut and sorted real life pictures from magazines based on their characteristics!

Letter of the week: Ss (Review: Aa, Mm- we also blended “a-m” to make the word “am” and now we will add “s” in front of am to make the word Sam!

Math: We will continue to practice counting 0-20. We will focus on numbers 11-20. We call these numbers tricky teens. Students will at times write number incorrectly within these numbers. Here is a chant that will help to remember writing the numbers:

1 and 1 make 11 fun,

1 and a 2 tell 12 what to do,

1 and a 3 tell 13 climb a tree,

1 and a 4 tell 14 shut the door,

1 and a 5 keep 15 alive,

1 and a 6 tell 16 pick up sticks,

1 and a 7 send 17 to heaven,

1 and a 8 makes 18 great,

1 and a 9 help 19 shine,

2 and a 0 makes 20 a hero!

We will also review patterns with shapes and other items. We will also discuss positional/prepositional words.

Science: Fall investigation. We created a thinking map of things that occur in fall. We will collect leaves and other items we find during our Fall walk. We will document our observations in our science log. We will also discuss and record our senses about the walk. What do we hear in Fall time? What do we feel in Fall time? What do we see in Fall time? What do we smell in Fall time? What do we eat in Fall time?

Social Studies: We will discuss what it means to be fair/equal. We will also discuss what a good choice is and why we established rules. We established a class slogan “if you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all”. We will continue to discuss what it means to cooperate and to work as a team.

Reminders:

• Students come home each day with a book bag. They are given leveled readers based on their level each week. I work on specific strategy goals that require your child to read and return the books daily. Please keep Ziploc bag of books in their backpacks. I have been sending home paper versions the past few weeks. You will now be noticing I will be sending home colored small books. These books will be exchanged weekly so please do not leave at home.
• You will also be receiving a note this week from the homeroom moms.
• Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather.

Classes are provided to you for free thanks to the Bilingual Department and the Dearborn Public Schools.
