Sight Word of the Week: Like

Letter of the Week: Ss

Writing: We will continue writing our opinion. Again, Opinion is what we think about something. This week we are pushing inventive spelling. Here are some tips: Stretch out the word.  Say it slowly. Write each letter you hear. Your child may not hear the vowels sounds yet but that is o.k.. We are trying to transfer the letters they do know to writing. The key is to be patient. You may noticed your child came home with an alphabet anchor chart. Practice the letters, letter sound and thing that begins with that letter. for example Aa /a/ apple, as a part of your daily reading. This will ingrain the the letter and sound for your child as a daily practice. For those who do know the the letter and letter sound, I sent home a blends and digraphs anchor chart.

Opinion Writing sentence stem this week: I like ____ because____.

Math: We are practicing writing numbers 1-20. We are working specifically on tricky teens. Make sure your child is is writing 14 not 41;  15 not 51 etc.. Here is a chant that will help remember the order of writing the numbers.

1 and 1 make 11 fun,

1 and a 2 tell 12 what to do,

1 and a 3 tell 13 climb a tree,

1 and a 4 tell 14 shut the door,

1 and a 5 keep 15 alive,

1 and a 6 tell 16 pick up sticks,

1 and a 7 send 17 to heaven,

1 and a 8 makes 18 great,

1 and a 9 keep 19 in line

2 and a 0 makes 20 a hero!

We are also highlighting that:

  • 11 is one ten and 1 one
  • 12 is one ten and 2 ones
  • 13 is one ten and 3 ones
  • 14 is one ten and 4 ones
  • 15 is one ten and 5 ones
  • 16 is one ten and 6 ones
  • 17 is one ten and 7 ones
  • 18 is one ten and 8 ones
  • 19 is one ten and 9 ones
  • 20 is 2 tens

We are also going to discuss 2d and 3d shapes. We will also take about how 2 shapes can make on bigger shape. For example, 2 triangles can make 1 square.  6 triangles can make a hexagon.  2 trapezoids make a hexagon.

Social Studies: Students will review what rules are and draw and write one rule down.

Science: We will continue our fall investigation. We will create a fall book to report our findings.

REMINDERS:

  • Friday, October 28th is the Halloween Parade at 1:30 weather permitting. Please refer to last blog post for Parade details.
  • If your scheduled to bring something for the Halloween celebration, drop it off in the morning!

Have a great week!

Week of October 17-21

Wow! What a fast week! We have done so much amazing things this week. We also lost a bit of power, but learning continued as usual. Tomorrow will be Spaghetti lunch because we missed that choice today.

Literacy Unit: Review Week

Reading: We read multiple stories about families: Peter’s Chair; Family Fun; Jennifer Bing Why Won’t Sing? Tio attends Rooster’s Wedding; Harry the Dirty Dog

Letter and Sight Word Review: I, can, the, we, Aa, Mm

Writing: I introduced Opinion Writing this week. Opinion is what we think about something. We started by choosing foods we like and discussed why. We then shifted to which book we liked. First, students were instructed to choose a book they liked and explained why. Next they draw the picture on the top half of the page. Then, they wrote the sentence I like the book _(title)__. If your child found this easy, I instructed them to write a sentence stem stating their opinion and why. I like the book _(title)__ because___.  We will practice more next week, but try this at home for more practice.

Math: We are covering shapes, shapes and more shapes. We cut out shapes to create a spider and pumpkins. We drew shapes and assembled them to create a simple picture based on oral directions. Each direction that was given was attached to directional or positional words. Draw a triangle on top of a square. Now you have a shape of a house etc.. We also wrote numbers 1-20. Some were able to do this without a problem and some friends struggled. Please practice.

Science: we covered a fall investigation. We conducted our fall walk and collected some Fall data. Your child came home with a Fall thinking map. Here are some key points to review with your child:

  • days are shorter, nights are longer
  • hibernation
  • harvest time
  • football season
  • school starts
  • leaves change color
  • the weather is getting colder
  • Halloween
  • Thanksgiving

Social Studies: We are still teaching cooperation and respect. We are emphasizing on working as a community that works, learns and plays together. I am testing them about the classroom rules and why they are important. Here are the rule for you to review with your child:

  • I can keep my hands to myself. (so I am not hurting my friends)
  • I can raise my hand and wait to be called on. (so I am being respectful to the teacher and not interrupting)
  • I can sit criss cross apple sauce with hands in my basket.  ( So people behind me can see and my fingers don’t get hurt)
  • Say nice things or don’t say anything at all. (So you don’t hurt someones feelings)
  • Treat others like you want to be treated. (being fair, have friends, respecting others)

Important Info about Lunch:

Just a note to say that if your child wants milk for lunch, they have been signing a “charge” list, which charges the cost to you and you will receive a bill for the amount charged.  Of course, all students are allowed to charge a lunch or just milk.  I just didn’t want you to receive a bill for lunch charges and you be unaware of how those charges were incurred.

If your child would like to buy/charge a lunch, you may pay when you receive the bill or pay ahead in the cafeteria (like a Debit Card).

Lunches cost $2.75  Milk is included

Milk alone  $.50

Looking Ahead:

  • Halloween Parade is scheduled for Friday October 28th. A few notes to keep in mind:
    • It starts at 1:30. Your invited to watch your child walk around the track with the rest of the school as long as it doesn’t rain.
    • Please send your child with their costume in a bag and we will dress them after lunch. Do not send your child dressed in their costume, they will dirty it at lunch.
    • If you want to take your child home and dress them yourself, you may pick up your child at lunch time, feed them at home, dress them and return them by 12:30.
  • Halloween celebration is also scheduled for the same day but it is only for the kindergarten children. If your assigned to bring in anything, drop it off in the morning. If you would like to send in candy to pass out, send that with your child in the morning as well.

Have a Fabulous Weekend!

Read to Someone

This is the second component to Daily 5. This is where students are given the opportunity to read with a partner. Students sit elbow to elbow and knee to knee. There is a book in the middle so both can see 😀
