Week of October 8th

Happy Tuesday! Please dress your child appropriately for the weather!! It is easier to take off layers. Michigan weather is unpredictable- one minute it is hot and the next minute it is cold and pouring!

This week in Kindergarten:

Reading: Pumpkin, pumpkin; I like Pumpkins; Pumpkin count down; Pumpkin circle; Strega Nona’s Harvest; From seed to pumpkin; The legend of Spookley

Reading Strategies:

  • Identifying the title, author’s role, illustrator’s role
  • Retell a story in sequence
  • Make a self to text connection (what does the story remind you of?)

Sight word: can (review all we learned so far)

Letters: Pp, Hh (review all we learned so far)

Writing: We will write opinions together and stating a reason why using our special word because. Examples include:  I like __ because __. I do not like __ because___.

Math: We are still composing and decomposing number 0-10. Our focus will be number 9 and 10. We will discuss ways to make those numbers. We have made the numbers using different ways such as:

  • dominoes
  • dice
  • finger and hands
  • scatter mats
  • subitizing cards
  • filling in ten frames
  • number bonds
  • creating number sentences

Social Studies: We have been discussing fair ways to play. We are reviewing rules and expectations in the classroom. PBIS is very important to help with making sure your child remains on task. Any work your child does not finish will have to complete during recess, daily 5 or math workshop. I have also introduced Playworks in recess time to help students learn how to play fairly and be good sports.

DETROIT ZOO INFORMATION

  • Field trip to the Detroit Zoo is on Thursday, October 11th. Chaperones please be available by 9:00 at the school to be ready to follow the bus if you do not know how to get there. The bus will be ready to load the students at 9:15. You may meet us at the zoo by 9:30 if you like to go ahead.
  • We will meet at the gate to walk in as a group.
  • Make sure your child has a packed lunch (no glass bottles, no lunch boxes). Send lunches in a grocery bag (so they can throw their leftovers and not worry about losing a lunch box)
  • We will inform you at the Zoo exactly what time to meet to leave but we need to be back at the the school by 2:00. We will meet at the water fountain to gather and load on the bus.
  • No gift shopping or riding the train please.
  • If you are a chaperone, check in with me at the zoo so I can tell you which children you have. Most chaperones have only one or two kids. I will also give you my contact info in case of emergency.
  • It looks like it is going to be 60 on Thursday and no rain so hopefully we will see some animals moving about and enjoying the nice weather! Please dress your child appropriately with a good pair of walking shoes.

Happy Tuesday!

Ms. Mohamed
