Week of October 2nd

Check out what we are learning this week:

Reading: Animal Babies; Lioness and the Ostrich, Bundle of sticks; Rooster’s off to see the world; Five little ducks; A frog in the bog

STRATEGIES:

Review all of these concepts as you read any book with your child: author’s role,

  • illustrator’s role,
  • front cover,
  • back cover,
  • spine of book or binding,
  • character,
  • setting,
  • left to right,
  • top to bottom.

New reading strategies for this week:

  • Retell: whenever we read or listen to a story we will practice retelling what happened. You can do this by reading a few pages and stopping to discuss what happened so far with your child.

Letter of the week: Ss (review: Aa, Mm, Tt, Dd, Cc)

Sight word of the week: the (review: I can we am)

Writing: We will be narrative writing. This is writing about a real story or event that happened. We will start off with one simple sentence and practice the mechanics of writing. We will be doing this for a while until your child id comfortable to do it on their own. For now, I will be writing sentences with them.  The ideas we will be focusing on will be:

  • Capital letter in the beginning of any sentence.
  • Spacing between words
  • Punctuation at the end of a sentence.
  • Return sweep at the end of a line to continue a sentence.

Math: We will be learning about Five Frames. This strategy is to build numeracy with numbers within 5. There will be games in place to help your child practice. I will be sending homework on Tuesday. It will be due the next day. The homework is not about how hard or easy it is. Its about responsibility to be returned the next day.

Science: We will be investigating the five senses to being a scientist. We will have 3 investigations on hearing, sight and sound. We will record our information in our science journals.

We will really dive into being scientist and investigators, so if you can send in a white t-shirt or lab coat and a pair of sunglasses with lens popped out(from the dollar store) or safety goggles that would be great. If you have a pair of glasses laying around with out lens that would work too.  We will  role play being scientist and be more engaged in our science time through different types of experiments and investigations.

REMINDERS:
