Week of February 13th

Review Week: Neighborhoods/Community Celebrations!

Reading: This week is all about celebrations! We will be reading Alicia’s Happy Day; Is this the job for you? (community helper jobs); Why is the moon in the sky?; Elves and the Shoemaker.

Strategies: Connecting to the text-

  • Think abut a celebration you enjoy with your family or community. It maybe Christmas, Eid, Thanksgiving, A Block Party, etc.. Talk about it!
  • Think about what you want to be in your neighborhood. Think about what community helper you would like to be when you grow up. It maybe a teacher, doctor, librarian, etc..Talk about it!

Letters of the Week: Jj, Uu

Sight word focus: do, for

Word Family: -et (met, pet, set, jet, vet, forget, get, fret, net, let, wet, yet)

Spelling Words: The words practiced are called hot words:

pet, set, met, for, a, see, do, love

The word I will add as a bonus will be a cold word from the word family -et

Writing: We will be creating a book called Do you love me? We will include a question and answer with characters and of course using quotation marks. You will see the book coming home Friday!

Math: We will really work hard on fluently adding within 5, but we will be practicing adding within 10 with manipulatives, drawing and counting on (instead counting from the beginning). Your child at this point should be able to write 0-100. We need to focus on if I say a number it is not written in reverse. For example, if I say “12”, your child should write 1 and then 2 following, not “21” .

Social Studies: We will continue to explore types of maps. We will explore parts of our neighborhood and create group neighborhood maps. We will explore a compose rose. We will learn that we are tiny things in this giant world. Specifically, we will continue working on the project flip book that will state:

My Neighborhood-

  • I live in Dearborn.
  • I live on Michigan.
  • I live in the United States of America.
  • I live in North America.
  • I live on Earth.

Science: We will explore land forms. Please discuss what each of the land forms listed below:

mountain

river

ocean

plain
