Unit 6: Neighborhoods

Reading: This week we will be learning all about a neighborhood and communities. We will read Russ and the Firehouse; Neighborhood Maps; In our Neighborhood; The Black Cat

Writing: We will be writing a fun narrative that kind of looks like a comic strip. We will be working on creating a character and giving them speech balloons/bubbles. We will practice in the text Russ and the fire house. Then, we will continue to practice by creating an animal character in the neighborhood as a whole group. Next, the children will have a chance to create themselves as a character in a neighborhood and give them speech balloon.

Math: We will explore solid shapes. We will discuss faces, corners, sides and vertices. We will revisit the nickel. We will explore 2-d and 3-d shapes.

Social Studies: We will explore types of maps. We will explore parts of our neighborhood and create group neighborhood maps. We will explore a compose rose. We will learn that we are tiny things in this giant world. Specifically, we will be working on a project flip book that will state:

My Neighborhood-

  • I live in Dearborn.
  • I live on Michigan.
  • I live in the United States of America.
  • I live in North America.
  • I live on Earth.
