New Unit: Animals: how they grow and change

Reading: We will read a couple of books of common animals: Mama Cat and her three kittens; Lets go to the vet; 3 Little Kittens; Mama mouse and El Gato

Strategy:

  • Sequence a story
  • Respond to questions asked (comprehension)
  • Retell a story
  • How to ask questions about a story?
  • How to answer your own question?
  • How to relocate information from text?

Sight words: has, red, yellow, blue; animal-bonus

Letters of the week: Ll, Oo

Writing: We will be writing an opinion. Students will be expected to write what animal they like and why. The sentence stem to guide your child in writing is: I like ___. It has___.

We will discuss:

  • what type of skin they have
  • how many legs
  • where do they live
  • what do they eat (carnivore:meat eater, herbivore:plant eater, omnivore: plant and meat eater)

An example includes: I like cats. It has soft fur. It has 4 legs. etc.

Math: We will be learning about the order of events in our day and week. Its all about learning time but in a general sense.  Below are examples of what we are looking for in the speech and writing.

  • A day would sound like: In the morning, we ____. In the afternoon, we___. In the evening, ____.
  • A week would sound like: Yesterday, we___. Today, we ___. Tomorrow, we___.

We will also be practicing to write 1-60 for those who are struggling. We will also review counting by 10’s to 100. We will practice counting by 5’s to 100.

Science: We will review motion and how objects move based on their shapes. We will review 3d shapes and discuss their movement. Examples include:

  • cones roll in a circle
  • cylinder roll straight on their side, but slide on the flat top/bottom side
  • pyramids, rectangular prisms, cubes slide on their flat sides.
  • spheres roll

Social Studies: We will present our timelines. We will briefly discuss Martin Luther King Jr. and his importance.
